Dreaming of Spring

I woke up to more snow...and more ice. It's bitter cold again and it's depressing. I haven't even seen ground in a long long time. I don't want to sound whiney, but, it's just rough. It's so hard to get anywhere and it wears you out fighting it constantly. And I am constantly cold this Winter. I went and looked at my old garden posts and I can hardly believe it was ever green and blooming here. But, it did cheer me up somewhat and I got out all my seed packets and sorted them. Though there's no need to sort them. It just made me feel better.
*
I wonder how much I'll be able to do this year? Not as much as last year, I'll bet, but, I won't quit. I'll just have to plant smarter. Low maintenence things, mass planting, ect. Here in Iowa, veggie garden planting day is usually around May 5th. That just seems like forever right now. The world is nothing but a cold hard lump of mean ugly ice. Cheery post, aint it? Sorry.
Are you dreaming of Spring too?

I am due for some snow on Wednesday into Thursday.
I am dreaming of Spring. This weekend I am going to decide what seeds to purchase for veggie planting.

Pat, I can't imagine how bad it is for you up there. We're getting snow for the 4th time this year and I'm already sick of it. I'm sorry.

I can relate to your depression. Wintertime is just so gloomy. I bought a light box for $50 a month ago and it's been really helpful. I'd be happy to tell you more about it if you're interested.

I really hope that you'll start up the garden again this year. Not only was it cool to see your stuff but it was obvious that you really loved it. If you don't do it again it will be like the motherthing stole that part of you.

I enjoy seed shopping like other women love shoe shopping. Sigh.

Tonya, I live in a cottage, there's no room to grow indoors. Yeah, Winter is just depressing now. I think everyone is affected, we're just tired of fighting it. Hopefully, by March I can at least start digging. I don't know how much I can do, but, I know I'll have flower beds at least.

winter. I can't wait for this years winter Olympic

I didn't mean a light box for plants. I meant one for YOU! It's a little lamp thing that gives you some of the sunlight that you are missing. It helps combat Seasonal Affective Disorder and helps depression.

I am ecstatic about is hearing you looking forward to planting your garden. I was devastated for you when your mom had your garden assassinated and I'm so happy to see you're making plans to begin again.

More snow heading my way tomorrow, too. About had it with winter, but in this part of the world, spring (if it shows up) doesn't arrive until early May. Lately tho, it's been cool and rainy springs. Really can't plant my flowers until Memorial Day weekend. Some day I'd like to live some place where they really have Spring.

Pat, I know what you mean - the winter is just so depressing - it just seems to go on and on and on. In the Chicago area, we had no real summer. It was cloudy almost every day and we only had maybe five days of real summer. Anyway, now we are getting a shitload of snow starting tonight and it will continue through Wednesday early morning. I hope we get a snow day where I work and I can stay home and have a free day. Hang in there, Pat. We love your blog and we love you! Hope you are feeling OK.

I am ! The snow that's torturing Iowa is coming my way . First, they said 6 inches, now they say 12-18 or more on top of the 30 inches we've got already. UGH!

We are having more snow in PA tomorrow. I am so done with winter. I was at the store yesterday and they had seeds out already. I was longing to buy them but what am I going to do with them with 3 feet of snow and ice.

I can't wait to see your garden this year. I'm going to work extra hard on mine. Maybe it will be a little better than what it was last year.

I lost track of how much we are supposed to get, it changes every few hours, it seems. I've lost the will to care...:(

I bought 40 packs of zinnia seeds this weekend. I'm planting a garden this year as well, inspired by your stories last year. Probably just tomatoes, beans, radishes and such, but I'm very excited!

Bayou Jane said...

Pat...has this winter been a normal winter? It just seems so bruttle. Is this kind of stuff what ya'll go through every year?
I know it's been a bad year personally, but that weather sucks.
I like the look of a beautiful snowy landscape, but only for a few days. All of you have my respect just for living through this every year! That's a tough life!

This.Army.Mom said...

You have my sympathy. I use to leave in the northeast corner of PA and it was gray most of the winter. I didn't even realize I had seasonal depression until I moved down south.

It just sucks being cold and it sucks being snowed in.

Here's hoping to a fast winter...next time your out, treat yourself to a bottle of red wine. It does the heart good!

I am right there with you Pat dreaming of Spring. Snow after Christmas is just redundant and depressing. Spring seems so far away right now. I hate wishing even a little bit of my life away but I need warmth, sunshine, iced tea, flip flops, and shorts. I think once I graduate, I am going to look at a more temperate climate to live in.

I'm still riding the "Saints Win" high!!!. As a new class came in the room today, I played one of the songs and we Second Lined around the room. I still don't have my shirt!

Something funny (in a strange way)happened today. I have (should say had) a mouse in my room. He seemed pretty tame. He would come out and watch the class. Then someone would try to get him and he'd hide. During my planning period, I was in my room alone making a test. He came out, walked around the room looking for crumbs of food (the kids try to eat while walking to the next class)and just exploring. And I just watched him. He went out my door, walked around the hall awhile and I thought he would head out the door. But he went into the class across the hall. Things were quiet for a little while and then all hell broke loose. One of the boys picked him up by the tail and before I could get there, the teacher yelled "kill it". So he slamed it on the floor and stomped on it. I felt so bad after that. I should have tried to catch it and brought it outside. I feel like I killed it which I could never do. He was cute and I let him die. But I blame the teacher. She didn't have to yell.
The boy told be after that he felt bad about killing it.
Stupid huh?

Melissa said...

No, not stupid Bayou Jane - I would have felt the same. But it was not your doing, there wasn't much you could have done to stop him from scuttling to the other classroom.

We have only had ONE day of snow to date and no more coming our way. I know you will think me crazy but I miss it. We have had a few harder winters in the last 3 or 4 years (hard in terms of West Coast...).

We have had sun peeking out for the past few days and it feels so damn good. I know the kids are eager for it to not just be sunny, but warm as well. My daughter keeps telling me that it's warm enough to go out in short sleeves and shorts but, it really isn't...

Can't wait to see what you will do with your garden this year, DD. Even if it is a "reduced version of last year", I know that you will do something fantastic.

Oh man, when I get those garden catalogs, I want one of everything. It makes me want to plant fruit trees and a huge garden. I miss my big garden, but I am going to have a little one this year. After I saw your veggies this year, Pat, I have to! Every year, I appreciate Spring even more.

Big time - spring seems to be an eon or two away. I will get to plant late May/early June and it seems to fall right after the first starlings lay their eggs in the handing geraniums I buy and hang every year.

I loved the pic of the vintage seed packs, they made me happy :)

Christina said...

Bayou Jane---what happened was completely out of your hands. If you had tried to catch the little guy, it might have destroyed his trust, and he might have been killed running out in the hallway. It was stupid of the other teacher to yell for the student to kill the mouse. What kind of idiot is she/he? I feel bad for the student. It was not your fault in any way.

I'm dreaming of spring, constantly. I have gotten way to many seeds at three different stores, and I think I am actually done. I've purchased more than I can possibly plant, but I had to have them. The sweet peas and peas are in the ground, but it was chilly this morning, so I hope they'll be alright.
I almost got to go home early on-call today. I was given permission to go, and then we got a call from the clinic that they were sending someone over with ruptured membranes. So I stayed. If I had been able to go home, I would have cleaned out the brooder. I am planning on getting new chicks on the 24th. I told my husband yesterday.
I'm really looking forward to hearing about whatever you decide to plant, and however you decide to decorate your yard, Pat. Spring may feel far away, but it's really just around the corner.

OH Pat, I can't even begin to tell you how much I'm dreaming of spring. This past week I could finally see my (brown) grass and my empty garden bed. Tonight we are getting hit with another snowstorm. It's not suppose to stop snowing until Wednesday night. People in Home Depot were fighting over shovels and rock salt. It's getting to everyone. I am sooo done with snow.

BTW, I'd rather shop for seeds over shoes any day.

our garden is burning up instead. you might know that we don't even have an ozone layer anymore so apart from high skin cancer rates (we have to cover up all the time cause the sun is so vicious) plants just turn black or brown under the harsh sun, well its that time of the year when you see all the years worth of growing just curl up and die under the hot sun. i guess its the same with snow and frost killing everything.

Hi Pat,

Are you taking Vitamin D?.

I am looking forward to planting some good stuff this year. My brother and my Mom got me to join them this Spring (when I get home), to take cookery lessons with her. She is a very good cook, but has drifted from measuring her portions and developed bad habits.

Years ago I took cookery classes and my Mom said she loved to watch me work the kitchen. Ever since then it was always her wish to cook together.

After reading "Born to Run" and "Warrior diet" I will be planting organic corn, tomatoes, peppers (hot, italian and poblano),
legumes and herbs. LED lights are so good now that I am tempted to grow some using hydroponics. I heard hydro-lettuce is very good.

I hope some sunshine sneaks its way in your day today.

Jarhead

Kiki; I feel for the Vancouver crowd. I hope they get some snow soon or they'll be fishing on the island instead of competing. Huge black bear, Roosevelt Elk and Mountain Lion there.

Life isn't all butterflies and cotton candy DD...sometimes you just have to let it all out. I'm ready for spring too. Well I'm always ready for spring. My camera is too. This lack of light is killing me!

SkippyMom said...

Nope! Not dreaming of spring - we just dug out from under 32.4 inches of snow with another 12 inches predicted tonight.

Schools are closed, my husband is off of work and we are enjoying a week off [free!] with card/board games and food and movie marathons.

It seems that since Christmas ends everyone suddenly wants spring - I don't like cold, but I don't wish away the winter - heck, we still have a few months left after the holidays, why not enjoy it?

Oh I am I am! I can't wait to see green again.

I've gotten together info on building standing planter boxes & herbs/veg that grow well in planters. I love projects & I want to get started on this asap!

I will definitely be turning to you for advice Pat.

We don't get snow in SC, it's usually a flake or two, but it's still been colder than usual.
I feel for you Northerners though. I don't know how you guys do it. I would be so depressed.

My boyfriend is taking me to Cancun Thursday and we'll come back Monday. I'm hoping he finally pops the question. It's been over 5 years and my patience is wearing thin!

I hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

Well, Jarhead, with hydro stuff, you'd never have to pick off bugs. There's a plus.

I heard seed prices will be way up this year due to the wet weather or some sort of BS. I dunno. But I did hear that they are going up. What isn't? Have fun shaking your seed packets. It IS fun to think about .

Snowing here in Indiana again. Supposed to be bunch, like 10" on top of the last 7 we just got last weekend. It does suck. Hate it. I think because I have to work and get out in it and I worry about my kids driving in it also. Its deadly. Hate it. C'mon St.Pattys Day! Thats my signal that it won't be long! And it's my daughters B'day!

Nope, I do too Pat. I spent an hr. last Thurs. poring over the seeds. I don't know what kind of Lowe's I'm looking in, but they sure are a lousy 'southern' Lowe's. I told them, what kind of Lowes in the south doesn't have BUTTERBEAN seeds! That was a staple on our table when I was growing up, (Va) fresh butterbeans and corn (succotash). During the summer, I could live on that and fresh 'maters and cukes! Oh, and green beans, w/some spring onions in them. I did plant some herbs (basil, thyme, rosemary) this wkend, indoors of course.

Palmetto Girl...if he doesn't ask you by Sunday night, why don't you ask him! What do you have to lose? You've been together for 5 years so you must be comfortable around each other. If he says no, ask him why. If he wants to leave things as they are, then you have the next move. He may have a case of nerves.

Oh! And if he's had several drinks it'll be easier! Good Luck!!!

Lia, I want to talk to you. I don't see a post from you in this thread. Unfortunately, the loud (including myself) drown out those who would quietly state a well thought out opinion. I don't know you but I've read a couple of your posts recently and I would love to hear what you've got to say here.

thanks tonya, i think its the nature of the internet. i can't get used to the idea that you simply just throw a few lines into the ether no more, no less, just that. kinda buddhist really, or thats what i tell myself, you know like the sand drawings that buddhists do. but when i send out a message (sometimes i can spend a lot of time putting the whole thing together, and i work a 50 hour week so its a great effort, its not as if i have all this spare time on my hands) i get all excited and rush home from work to check the computer to see if anyone has responded, but it rarely happens. people are really good at just reading and then 'moving forward' (i love that term.... not) it happens with mobile text messages too and drives me INSANE all i want to do is text DID YOU GET MY FUCKING TEXT but thats really bad manners. anyway i have a mental picture of all these people just talking to themselves. so thanks for talking to me!!

A-Gran said...

Lia, that made me laugh. Our society is just so "Now" oriented that it takes more and more to get our attention. I'm just as bad as anyone else, if not worse.

Between your messages, your comment about Buddhism, and your restaurant I think you must be a very relaxed sort of person. Is that true? And if so how do you keep that focus when everyone in the world is screaming at you all the time?

Maybe if we could come up with an internet acronym for did you get my message (DYGMM?) more people would respond? (Joking. No, I'm not.)

lia said...

then there are all these messages to people that no one ever finds because everything dates so fast that they become 'older posts' that you forgot ever existed....... i'm going assume that you never see this. anyway, i've found your blog. i'll talk to you there!! oh and.... relaxed? how can anyone who works a 50 hour week ever be relaxed? but at least i don't have time to worry about stuff :>)

A-Gran said...

Ha! Fooled ya, I came back to look for it. It DOES go by fast. The internet has really shortened our attention spans.
