Wendy Jones went with her hubby to The Antiques Road Show, he had some old books he wanted valued, and on the way out the door, she grabbed a plate that she's had sitting on her rickety side board for years. She put the plate in a Tesco bag and tossed it in the backseat. Geez, the plate turned out to be worth £100,000 and the expert said: 'It is the most valuable thing by far that I have seen on the roadshow. HERE is the article.*
Damn, that is the fugliest plate I have ever seen and I'd have thrown it out. I threw a McCoy globe and plane cookie jar in the ditch one time..because I thought it was super fug. That plate would never have stood a chance, even if it was a family piece. I'll never be rich.

Amazing - and yes the plate is ugly. I like watching US Roadshow but I get bored with the one from Britain version, not sure why.
Hey DD, I emailed you with some pictures of the Chatty Cathy doll that I think you are looking for. Did you get my email?
I guess that is why the ugly stuff is worth more. People throw the ugly stuff out so there are less of them around? That kind of a bummer keep the stuff you can't stand to look at it's worth a fortune!
That sure would be a shock I love it for that lady.
that lady is already rich, just look at her. Rich just keep getting richer. I enjoy that show. Sometimes when they have to tell someone their stuff is crap it's funny tho. Sometimes I feel bad for them, it depends on the person. That plate is valuable because that guy said so? It's someones opinion. If you collect plates, then yea, maybe. If not, then who cares? Is it art? Not to me. I dont get this one either.
Roxanne is right that lady is already wealthy
this sort of stuff isn't your run of the mill knick
knack stiff everybody has on display it's a
museum quality piece handed down as a family heirloom
a wealthy family heirloom. Good to read she will
be giving it her son to help him out with the ca$h.
Some people have all the luck it's just life folks. Kiki :)
I bet most of these people never make near as much money as the Antique Roadshow people say they will. I've seen people on that show bring on some ugly vase or something, and the expert will say "It's worth $50,000!" and the people get super-excited. But who, in the real world, will really pay that much for somebody's old junk? I always wonder. I know there are collectors in the world who might buy it but that's still only a *might*. I bet a lot of those things sell for way less than the experts say.
I guess it depends on if the right person shows up or has a representative at that particular auction. I wonder if a museum will buy it? Lots of collectibles are purchased by The Japanese, Saudis and if I remember right, now the Russians. Whomever seems to have an oil boom, gets rich, and looks to invest in fine art or collectibles.
what about the owner, she looks like the british queen!!!
I guess I don't have the "rich" gene either, cuz I think all that crap is fug. The art, the tapestry, the dishes...geez I guess I have no sense of "style". Some of the furniture is ok.
