I watch it on the net, which means I see the idiot comments from retarded teenagers that think they know about the 60's. "Dey wore dem retro stuffs back den." Umm, it wasn't retro then, please feel free to look up the word retro, you mongoloid. "Hippys were peeple that had unproteck sex and took lotz of durgs. It wasn't about a revoulshun at awl, jus sex and durgs."
At least our "fake" revolution signs were spelled right, you insufferable moron. As for unprotected sex, do you have any idea when birth control became legal? Maybe you could, I don't know, LOOK IT UP on your computer? "This show is not true cuz of noone can trate women like that at all!" Oh, honey, yes, they did. Women were nothing more than semi-intelligent pets who were rewarded for good behavior and nice grooming and punished for individual thinking back then. We fought very hard so that your goofy little butt can dress like a whore and say ignorant things on the Internet. Oh, and yes, indeed, cigarettes were quite legal on planes, in hospitals and anywhere else. Now, please get off Pan Am and go watch Rihanna play with herself while screeching like a dying cat. ~Pats head~ There's a good little ignorant moron.
I like Pan Am..I do not like it's viewers.
The idea that the 60s were nothing but a drug-fueled orgy amuses me. I was born in the summer of 69 and I was what some might call a 'love child' and others might call a 'fatherless bastard.' I assure you that this was NOT an acceptable position for my mother to be in and she put up with so much shit for it. I was born in a home for unwed mothers. Yes, they had those back then. That's where they shipped young girls who "got themselves in trouble." Naturally, my father was never affected by any of this shit because he was a man and wasn't held responsible. Child support was rare back then. Child support to a woman you weren't even married to? Forget it. Women had it hard back then and the women of today can't even begin to imagine what the world was like only 40 short years ago. If you're able to take responsibility for your own contraception thank the women of your mother's generation.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, smoking everywhere was cool. I used to go grocery shopping with a cigarette and barefooted in the 80s. I smoked in the same room as my daughter in the hospital. It was a different time.
ReplyDeleteWe've talked about those "homes". Cruel work camps for dirty little whores. Someday maybe I can write about it. None of these kids today knows how horrible those times were.
ReplyDeleteI am HOOKED on Pan Am. Back when I worked for an airline in the 90's, the stewardesses still were all good looking, kind, educated, well mannered and spoke three or more languages. It was such a pleasure to fly and truly an event to look forward to, especially where I worked, the service was outstanding and the food was delicious and drinks were complimentary after lunch or dinner. There was a smokers section in the plane as well.
ReplyDeleteBut now, you get on a plane and it's one step close to being a chore. Service has gone down hill and it's gonna take a long time to recover. Being a stewardess was glamorous and it was something I wanted to do my whole life since I was a kid.
(ps I wasn't a stewardess, I was in reservations)
ReplyDeleteAnd before anyone jumps on the stewardess' chief's ass for putting them on a scale, the right weight, age and being fit is important for people working in flight. They need to be able to lift, pull, push, carry, be agile in case of emergency. Last time I flew none of the attendants fit this description and it scared the shit out of me.
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying Pan Am, too. When I was growing up, we never went anywhere by plane, but we went to the airport a number of times just to watch planes take off and land. We went all dressed up in our "Sunday-go-to-meeting" clothes, and I was always in awe of how glamorous the stewardesses and pilots looked. This takes me right back. I could do without the CIA angle, too, but we'll see where they go with it.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I flew was in 1968---I was 18. I felt all grown up and important because the stewardess asked ME what I would like to drink. I flew from Atlanta to New Orleans for under $25. And there were only about 15-20 people on the whole plan. One of the stewardesses was a beautiful blond with her hair in a french twist and just the right amount of make-up. I kept waiting for Dean Martin to step out of the pilot's cabin.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny the things we can remember. It's very vivid to me, as though it happened yesterday. Unfortunately, I can't remember yesterday!
DD, I would love to hear your story. Oddly enough, my mother never really wanted to talk about it and she was always one to share her pain and how she suffered. I know she hated it and that she didn't want to be there. She was 21 at the time. It seems so crazy by today's standards. You're 21! Just go get a job and tell everyone to fuck off! Ah, but see... nobody back then would hire a pregnant unmarried skank. It's truly amazing how different shit was back then and the ONLY reason it changed was because of women in the 60s and 70s who said, "ENOUGH!" And demanded equal rights. I'm thankful for all of you who did that and I can't imagine how much it must hurt to see young girls running around nowadays worshiping celebutards and thinking of themselves as nothing more than sexual objects. It pisses ME off and I never even did anything to change the status quo.
ReplyDeleteI went to a perfume shop today and it was covered in photos of Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton. Why do you want to smell like a woman whose only claim to fame is a sex tape? I hate girls these days.
Has nothing to do with your post but when I google dirtydisher to come to your site, it doesn't come up anymore. I had to get here in a very roundabout way and I will be adding it to my favourites (which I should have done ages ago, I know).
ReplyDeleteI do love the post though and find it very interesting when both you and your readers write about your pasts. I was born in in 88 so I'm still young but I'm a history major and love reading about your guy's lives. Dishy, I wish you would write some more on your Last Word site. I am captivated by your stories.
Kirsty, I totally agree. I remember when she was writing there I would savor that shit. I'd wait until the house was all quiet and then I'd read it all like a novel. She has a way of writing that transports you into the story, doesn't she?
ReplyDeleteOh, and my daughter was born in 1988 too Kirsty so your mom might have been puffing away too. I was a good mom because I put mine out whenever they wheeled the baby into the room. lmao. Times were different.
ReplyDeleteMy mum never smoked, anything lol. I was also born in England so while it was clearly different in 88 then now, it was also different in England when compared with the U.S. Sadly, she doesn't have a lot of stories from that time period. I don't think it's because she doesn't want to talk about it but more of an indifference on her part.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, I completely agree with you. I love Dishy's writing style. She should put out a book, it would be a best seller. All her loyal fans would make it so :)
You're all making me crave a cigarette but that would go over like a fart in church, considering I am at work and reading this in my office! : D
ReplyDeleteOh Mary you have work ethic like I do. :)
ReplyDeleteI've watched one episode I will catch up. I'm so glad things have changed. Except I would probably enjoy the grocery store more if I could smoke in it. :)
Back in the day, a man could grope you, belittle you, shove you against a wall and hump you, grab your tits and ass and no one would stop him. No one would even punish him. He could do it every day at work and you just had to learn to avoid him, always looking over your shoulder. You learned to fight him off and hold your head up while his buddies laughed. You learned how to shoot and owned a gun and a big mean dog so he couldn't come to your house and rape you. And they did walk right into your house, because you lived alone and that's not natural. And you worked in a bar so you were a whore. I could go on all day.
ReplyDeleteI work for a airline. Have been for almost 18 years of my life. I might only have a 1.5 on a day off or a couple of hours. But I wouldn't change a moment. Pan Am is not bad overall.
ReplyDeleteFawn.
I think all these actresses are very pretty, but the French one is truly beautiful. Never heard of any of them except for Christina Ricci, though.
ReplyDeleteYou think the French one's pretty??? I thought she looked just like my old photos and wondered if people though she had a huge nose. Nice to hear.
