Faux stained glass valentines

We made this project the other night. Lis loved it, she made them for everyone she knows. You shave old crayons down and put the shavings between sheets of wax paper. Then you lay a towel over them and iron until they melt. Then you cut out any shape from the 'stained glass.' She also wrote messages on hers with markers. They look really pretty hanging in the window.

Love this idea, I put it on my kids page on Pinterest. They have some great ideas.

If they're small, let them use the sides of the safty sissor blades to shave the crayon. You have to help, they won't get much. But, it doesn't take much wax. Only a little. The results are beautiful.

I let Lis use a paring knife..she did well and was careful.

Oh, I forgot..use an old towel. It will tend to squish out when the kid puts too much wax in.

I think that is so pretty. When you cut the valentines, do they break? How did you stop that?

No, they don't break. You leave them inside the wax paper. It's really cool.

I used to do it with my school classes. I did it with first graders, so it's an easy one.

Here's another Valentine's craft that we just did for presents to the class:

Take the millions of broken crayons in the house and put the bits into a muffin tin (we used one of the heart-shaped rubber "never stick" ones that are flexible). Bake at 275 for around 10 minutes. Let cool for 25 minutes at room temp and then stick in freezer or fridge for another 10 to fully set up (if you put the hot tin in, they will crack). Cool, tie-dyed "new" crayons.
