Hillbilly yard art
Miss Peg and I took a road trip to Missouri today. Somewhere between Toad Holler and Maryville I saw a sign that said "Homemade Yard Art and Sweet Corn!" So, I yelled, go back, go back! I was very taken with these china sculptured what nots. They were just so fucking clever. Whoever put these together has a real eye for primitive art. I should have taken more pics, there were some nice metal sculptures too. If you click the first pic, you'll see turtles (to the right) made by pouring cement in bowls and they used forks for the legs and spoons for the heads. They covered them with glass blobs for sparkle.
I bought this small one and broke it before I got it home. But, I glued it back and there it is in my garden. The one eared cheerful bunny ball. Awww. (I lost his broken ear.) Of course, we went right to the dollar store and bought glass (her) and glass blobs (me). Because the big ones were $20 bucks. Worth it, but, I'm poor right now and there's a lot of old glass in the sheds. Miss Peg pointed out how awesome the bigger ones would look and sound in the rain. I'll bet you could even add bells. Now, where's that box of bells I got at a yard sale?
Has a Alice in Wonderland feel to it :)
ReplyDeleteAnd, Yeah to road trips!!!
ReplyDeleteCould use one soon :)
It was pretty awesome to get out. I just noticed those old metal watering cans! Maybe when I make some extra money we can go back. I'm sure there's more to see.
ReplyDeleteYes, Alice in Wonderland is it!
ReplyDeleteThat was my first thought too. It's a bud vase glued to an upside down cereal bowl. With a cheap, made in china, bunny on top. And purple glass blobs. About as simple as you can get, but, the result is pretty charming. Like a mushroom in Alice's garden. Who ever made these had a real knack for picking the right things to go together.
ReplyDeleteThat tiny one with the clear glass and pink blobs had a frog on top. It was so cute. And the black and clear one was very Deco and cool.
ReplyDeleteYou do find the best yard sales!
ReplyDeleteActually, there aren't many here. Town's too small. Last week there was one.
ReplyDeleteI love road trips!
ReplyDeleteThe yard art is beautiful! Someone here, locally, makes sculptures like those, but they only use clear-type and colored/clear dishes and bowls. They use them to make bird baths, feeders, large, glass flowers to poke in the ground, etc. Beautiful, but I haven't spent anything on it, yet.
A couple days ago, I also saw some men selling used circular saw blade art. They painted some of them to look like sunflowers, and others like brightly colored cartoony flowers, and put them on some sort of old piece of machinery that was painted green, as stems. Very cool stuff.
It's pretty inspirational. I might have to try my hand at something like that.
