'Normal' Barbie
Pittsburgh-based artist Nickolay Lamm created Lammily (The normal Barbie) by molding the CDC's measurements for an average 19-year-old female to a 3-D model of a Barbie doll. He hopes his doll, who wears very light makeup and is dressed with "striking simplicity," promotes a healthy lifestyle and realistic beauty standards.
Bullshit. Who's to say what 'normal' is? Pretty presumptuous, if you ask me. Barbie is an icon and I don't know anyone who's been 'damaged' by owning a Barbie doll. This thing looks like a Kardashian. Is that considered the standard by which we should all be judged..or aspire to? I think not.
Besides, this shit is nothing new. When I was a kid, Tammy was the 'normal' Barbie. She was made by Ideal and was very cute. I still have her and most of her family. The problem was, her waist was too big to fit in Barbie clothes and she had to have her own wardrobe. Most people couldn't afford two wardrobes and Tammy and her family bit the dust. She is now a collectors item.
Why don't people just leave Barbie alone? I don't know anyone who wanted to be Barbie. We just wanted to play with her. Is someone going to make a 'normal' GI Joe for the boys? He'd have receding hair and a small pot belly. He'd come with his own video games and a 'play' six pack.
I call bullshit. Normal Barbie would have way more backne.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad knew someone who worked at Mattel. It must have been 1967 or 1968 when he brought home to my sister and I the new talking Barbie. Pull the cord on the back of her neck. Turned out they gave him factory rejects. We pulled the cords and the voices were all warbled and deep! Those were our first and last Barbies. They were quickly abandoned.
ReplyDeleteThose things are probably worth a mint now! I have an old one that speaks Spanish.
ReplyDeleteHaving had been a staff designer at Mattel for years and years, you can rest assured they would NEVER make Barbie look like this one deemed 'normal.'
ReplyDeleteGood.
ReplyDeleteI had a Tammy doll, and clothes, and her car. None of it is around anymore, but for years I have been periodically checking Ebay for one like mine. I've never purchased one, but I might someday.
ReplyDeleteAs an adult, I have had a few Barbies. Maybe 10 or so, when I started collecting them, but I sold them all at garage sales. Just not my thing.
I think the Lammily looks like a Kardashian, or maybe Hispanic. Not something I would buy for myself or anyone else.
