Is anyone ready to see this dang house?
Maybe calling it a 'house' is rather hopeful..or even wistful. I know! But, wait, let me tell you what I know. The little thing is solid, it has a solid foundation and a basement. I just looked at the property records and they go back to the 1860's. There is some evidence that it might have logs or split logs under that siding and all that lath and plaster. It is one strange little building. But, it's actually bigger than it looks.
You ready for the next part? I am hesitant to show you because I know some of you might think I've completely lost my marbles. I wouldn't blame you. Okay, here goes...
The living room is small, but, decent small. Plenty of room for furniture and TV and stuff. The old windows are cute and most of them have storms. It has the cutest old exterior doors and old squeeky screens. He said he actually had replacements for these and I about died. No way. Anyhow, there is nothing here some paint and carpet couldn't fix. Moving on...
Well, umm the kitchen needs a little something. Heh. Yeah, well, I love the solid wood 50's style cupboards and I just want it cleaned and painted. This kitchen is actually BIG. There is room for my china cabinet, my pie safe and a table and chairs, with room left over. Strange how they made it so large. It must have been the heart of the house, but, it's unusual in a place this old.
There are two bedroom, totally uneventful. Nothing wrong with them. Paint and carpet needed. One has a king mattress in it, so they're both big enough. But, the farther back you walk into the house, the more you can feel...something. That plastic and cardboard next to that lamp is weird. I asked him wtf that was and he didn't bullshit me. He said the last residents (years ago) were afraid of the closets and blocked them off. I said, 'It has closets! Woo hoo!' But, he said, for real, 'it' starts at the witching hour, 3 am, but, he never let it bother him. I pegged it. I said it's a man and a woman, but, it's the old woman who walks the house. He said, 'Exactly'. Her name is....'Effie!' We both said it at the same time. He's psychic too. Anyway, I don't see her as a problem.
Okay, that will need more than a little bleach and paint. Yeesh. But, I know how to hunt the salvage yards, and I know how to put this stuff in too. It's really not a big problem. The general plumbing and the sewage pipes are in very good shape. So is most of the electric. He's fixed the roof and it looks good everywhere, except...
The laundry room, porch. A tree fell in on it last year and he ignored it. He asked me if I wanted the whole room torn off, but, I think we can save it. Seriously. I know it looks really bad, but, he sees holes in the roof, I see...a Clematis coming through! Gotta save that! There's a shitload of roofing tiles already here and I think we can fix it and drywall the inside. The floor there is concrete. Nothing's rotted that can't be cheaply replaced. Shrugs. It would make a great office shared with a washer. And I could sit there and look at my gardens. I like the windows and old doors in there.
Okay, there's the Guntown shack. I know some of you think I'm out of my mind. But, I'm doing this. Remember, if you think it's ugly..there's always Trumpet Vine. Wish me luck.

Are you buying this house or what? It would be purrfect for you and Lis with lots of hard work. You can do it!
I was like...awww it's cute...until I got to the bathroom pic. LOL Good luck DD, your going to need it, along with some energy. I don't have a lot to spare, but I can send some your way! :-)
I see full ON potential here. And for some reason I see this house painted a very pale sage green with a slightly deeper celadon green trim.
I am buying it, yes.
Speak, lol. You and me both. That BR is gross. But, so is the one I have only it's clean. I'm gonna have help.
Mary! Oh my, sage green never crossed my mind, but, that sounds so nice. I can paint it in photoshop and see how that looks. Also, I have a pile of extra slate tiles to patch with already there. So, I won't worry about siding. I can't afford it and painted, it will look okay.
Lots of potential. Hard work and it's will be a nice cottage style house. I can see lots of white. But what do I know? The kitchen is good. Paint and scrubbing and it will be fine. Do u have any wood floors? U can paint & stencil them if they can't be sanded & refinished. So many ideas! You will love it there. So...What's the deal? Does your family own that whole Block? Lol. Have fun. You will be so tired. Glad u will have help. U will need to strip that back room down to the rafters and just start over. It's just easier. And then any dampness can't get moldy. & the wiring can be checked out for any water damage too. Check in here once in a while with an update. Good luck and congratulations. Very exciting summer ahead for you. :)
how much does a house like that cost?
Yay-so glad it worked out for you! I bet your daughter could find you some reasonable stuff in KC at the Habit for Humanity stores. Looks like a lot of work, but if anyone could make that place a home, it will be you.
I was thinking shutters on the front windows. And you have such a sense of color. I think it could be a pretty little house. How big is the yard? Are you going to try to show the log structure? Do you think Effie is going to be easy to live with? And how far is it from your mom? And it has a basement. I worry about tornadoes. I'm excited for you.
Rox, I thought I'd keep the white outside. I like sage green though. Ehh, plenty of time to think about that. Yeah on hardwood. I'm thinking most of it, it's typical in this area. I don't give two shits for hardwood, I can take or leave it. I like carpet. I'm odd maybe, but, I like warm feets.
Bima, I'll tell you to the penny when I sign. Don't wanna jinx myself.
Mrs. S, good thinkin'!
Jane, no on the logs, it's just interesting what you find in these old places. I hate logs, actually and could never afford to do that right. It's catty corner from my moms. Half block. Far enough, trust that. Yes, I think Effie will mess with me at first, but, she's not bad. Just old and grouchy. A little intense actually. I got a face full of her and it did startle me. But, hell, I see myself in a mirror and shit bricks. LOL. The basement would be an old Iowa basement. Not fit for habitation, but, dry and holds a decent furnace. No need for a new one. You can't beat that, man.
Well, I guess it's time to start figuring where you will put all your plants. What do you know about the neighbors---good or bad?
I'll scrub that terlet fer yeh! And hey! CABINETS!!! You got cabinets, man!
Its yours and I can't wait to see what you do with it.
Jane, the neighbors are the old lady and Bitch Face. You didn't think I could actually escape, did you?
Cut, Thanks fer the terlet work. Yeah buddy!!! Yesterday I actually typed 'warsher' before I re-read. I am Guntown'd here. Brain fried.
Do you have time to paint and clean up a bit before you move in? I would start in the kitchen then hit the bathroom lol. After you see the results of you work in the kitchen you will have that extra motivation to hit the bathroom.
I see a light pale yellow in the kitchen our a light taupe beige mixture to bring out the other colours in the counter top. I bet Lisa would love to help, some good gloves from the dollar store, bleach, sos etc lol it would be a project of LOVE for both of you, She could pick her colour for her bedroom!
I always think of pale yellow as a pretty country colour with happiness and sunshine. I painted my hallway and living room pale green and It makes me think of the hospital.......wish i would have thought that one out lol...
When my mom passed away and they moved her to the LAST room, overlooking a river...it was pale green...
You have so many variations of colours now...does Lisa want black in her bedroom lol...
I'm really excited for you, Pat. I can't wait to see what you do with it, and what it's gonna look like once you get all your plants relocated. Effie sounds like she's used to running the place, lol, but I bet she's gonna love having you and Lis there--as living people who won't be afraid of her and her husband. Sending lots of good thoughts and energy your way!
Kim
Thank you all and hugs, hugs, hugs. I'll have all the time in the world to fix it up. I figure to move next Spring. I am not going to kill myself to try and get in it now, much as I'd like to. I know my limits.
Yellow is one of my colors. I love yellows and oranges. Yep, I WILL go there. I'm seeing a depression era kitchen. I have lots of that sort of stuff. Linens, curtains, knick knacks, dishers, etc. All put away in boxes now. It will be a blast to get them out.
OMFG, I just realized this house looks almost identical to the one I lost. The farm house. Holy moly! I'll have to find pics. Talk about Karma!
I think the house looks cute and as long as you aren't afraid of hard work, you are going to be really happy there. I'm curious...if it was on the same block, why do you think you never noticed it before? Just a general disinterest in the neighborhood or something else? I love cottages and I LOVE front porches. Have fun picking out your colors :)
Congrats DD! looks like a cute little house for the 2 of you to enjoy. cant wait to see pictures as the process goes along! please do post lots :)
ps. did the previous people think that cardboard & plastic would stop a spirit? lol.
The house is really cute! I know that there is a lot to fix in the back room, but I think it is smart to keep that rather than tear it down. If you have help, it will be do-able, and I think that would be a very enjoyable space!
How much yard do you have, and what will happen to the house you are in, now?
I can't wait to see what you do with it! It is so cool that you posted pictures of what it looks like now! I am now glued to my seat to see the transformation.
Those two pictures with the plastic, etc. up are creepy. I'm glad you were able to scope things out, and that you are comfortable with it, though. I don't know why things like that scare me so much.
Christina
I love it! I second the yellow tones for the interior. At least for one of the larger walls, or the wall that catches the most sunlight. I would keep the doors and frames white. Oh I love a painting project!!!
Wonderful news! Can't wait to see what you do with it. Love projects like this, wish I lived closer, I'd help you out!! Best of luck, Cindy
But, nothing's signed yet. The money is here, he just needs to come get it. I'm waiting. Maybe he changed his mind??
Yay! I'm excited! I wanna come help!
I think it is awesome! I wish I lived closer I would be helping in a hot minute. Can't wait to see what you do with it as you do it!
NO WAY! That's AMAZING!!!! I really hope it happens. What a great project and it will be ALL YOURS! That's so exciting! It really is. I'm looking forward to your home renovation blogs already! You are going to make it look fantastic!
I love old stuff. I always look for the bones in a house. The less 'modern' they are, the better.
I like it. How big is the lot?
How far from cruella?
wiggy
Go for it, nothing that paint, carpeting and cleaning wont fix.. It has a ton of potential!
