11 year old cowgirl bags a Mountain Lion

THIS is an amazing story. 11 year old Shelby White spotted a Cougar stalking her brother, so she grabbed a rifle and shot it...dead. One shot. Holy cow! You have no idea how sad the death of one of these big cats makes me, but, it was after a human. It was also very skinny, which means it was very hungry and possibly sick, which makes it dangerous. I had no idea there was a Cougar problem in Washington, but, this is the fourth one the family has shot on their ranch. The big cats have been killing their livestock. Sorry, but, that's asking for it. Still, it's nice to know that at least there IS a cat population.

This little girl has been hunting since she was eight. She's had gun safety classes. She obviously knows what she's doing. I just thought it was amazing. She's quite a kid. The article talks a little about hunting and mentions dogs. I wish they would outlaw hunting with dogs everywhere, unless it's bird dog retrievers. I think dogs treeing an animal to be shot is totally unfair and an ugly practice. It always seemed a chicken shit way to hunt, to me. Little Shelby didn't need a dog. She did what she needed to do. That's pretty cool, if you ask me. Her father was home at the time, but, Shelby was the only one who had a tag allowing her to legally kill the cat. It just blew me away when I saw her photo and how young she is.

Everything about this story made me sick and sad. Big cats infiltrate territory that used to belong to them and are shot dead. Fucking awesome ....

It's a dangerous animal Tia, not a kitty. Sorry, but when your HUMAN family is in danger the cuteness factor goes away.

It made me sad too, but, if it was stalking my kid, I'd shoot it. I saw one in my garage once, but, it didn't seem dangerous. We just watched it.

I totally disagree, Anonymous. Because of the selfish human race and disrespect of mother earth, that cat was forced to look for water and food. It's not about a cuteness factor; animals are dignified and much better than many, many humans. Humans, inevitably, fuck up the balance and the poor animals pay. Humans are NOT at the top.

It would have been more interesting to live trap and relocate, to me. But, these are ranchers. They live differently than us. I have a hard time judging them for it. At the same time, I feel so bad for the cats. Not too long ago, I felt like they were an endangered species. It's good to know they're bouncing back, but, obviously, in some places, they can't support themselves. THAT makes me real sad. I don't know what the answer is. Controlled hunting? That's what they're doing. It can go too far though, as we all know. Entire species have been nearly wiped out. Like the Buffalo.

Gandhi said, "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

We humans are bloated, self-righteous and self-entitled. We tip the balance, we ruin nature and then we think we can control and correct it by murdering animals when we were the ones responsible for the mess in the first place. Seeing a kid with a gun in her hands and a poor, dear, dead animal at her side is despicable. I think we are the animal population that needs thinning out.

Trap and relocate is a great idea and I highly endorse that. Also, telling land developers they can't rape and build in areas populated with NATURAL habitat would be a great thing, too, but greed and corruption will spoil that wonderful idea.

I guess I pissed a couple of my friends off with this post. And I'm sorry for that, really I am. But, I can't help but have admiration for a girl who can take care of herself and her family. I have lived in both worlds and I see both sides. I love animals too, but, I will always see good hunters as the true preservers of wild life. The good ethical ones serve as much as animal rescue groups. It's a fine line.

I once got stranded alone in an isolated pass at the base of the Rockies. I was 100 miles from pavement, I couldn't walk out. I had a small tent, a backpack, a handgun, a rifle and a dog. I spent one entire night being stalked by a mountain lion suspected of previously attacking 3 people and killing one. I never saw the cat, but, I could hear it. Circling, stalking, waiting. It was one long terrifying night. I've never told anyone about it, until now. Until you've been in that situation, you don't know what you'd do. You may think you do, but, man, your brain goes everywhere, with every possible scenerio, to try and survive. It was the dog, in the end, who knew what to do. The next day I looked at the tracks, which were huge, and circled the tent. It came within 100 yards, over and over. The simple fact was..I was food. I was being hunted and I was food. Think about that. What would you do?

BTW, that was the last time I went camping in a tent. Fuck that shit. I want walls, locks and plumbing. A hundred yards sounds like a lot, but, it's not when it's pitch black and you're alone and terrified. The last thing I was thinking about was animal rights or animal cruelty, believe me.

Dear DD,
Just wanted to say you didn't piss me off; part of the beauty of friendship/relationships at any level is to be able to disagree on certain topics and still get along. I respect your views, comments and debates. I love your stories. If I could make the world a perfect place, I would wish respect and harmony between all animals and dwellers. x0

Thanks for that. The worst part of that camping story is, I allowed a man to put me in that situation. If he hadn't left his Weimer with me, I probably wouldn't be here. The dog had more heart than the big white hunter ever did. Funny, I never liked that dog. After that night, 'Duke' took over my life, like Weims do, and I never complained about him again.

BTW, I was thinking about the cat that girl killed. If you live trapped it, there is no way you could free it in that condition. It wouldn't do it much good. You'd have to get it healthy first. Where do you keep a wild Cougar?? Man, that's a whole set of other problems.

The lion that stalked me was killed by a game warden and his trackers the next day. I saw the body. He was not skinny (he was big) and he didn't appear sick or injured in any way. He was just mental, I guess.
