Comon Core Math...pisses everyone off

A man posted that on his Twitter in frustration. You can click it to read it. It's his kid's homework, his Kindergarten kid, and the man has a PHD. He can't make heads or tails out of it. He says it makes no sense and there is no right answer. Parents all over the US sided with the father and there are more examples and links HERE. Common core math makes kids cry. Actually, it makes parents cry.

Lissa is doing simple Algebra now. I think the words simple and Algebra should never be in the same sentence. We get things like this sometimes, match this to that and give and example of what the fuck? She gets frustrated and I blame it on my brain damage, but, then I just tell her, cheer up, in real life there is no such thing as Algebra.

It's pretty discouraging to see schools doing this to Kinder kids though. I mean, wow, nothing like starting them out with things they can't understand or solve. Way to label them a dumb ass in their head before they even learn to properly wipe their butts.

I was always really good at math, in fact I even monitored it and I am just side eying these incomprehensible instructions. WTF does that even mean. I am definitely somebody who thinks we need better STEM education in this country but this....this is just baffling.

Ha ha gotta love the auto correct. I minored in math.

I majored in 'fuck it'. Math sucks. I never understood why kids aren't asked to master a check book and a waitress's tab book with tax sheet. That would pretty much cover any normal person's math requirements. If they feel the need for more, tell 'em to go shoot some eight ball or snooker. Them angles are a bitch.

ps, I find it amazing that Lisa doesn't like math, but, you take her to a 25% off sale and she can figure out that she has enough for a sequined halter top in a heartbeat.

Yeah my mom teaches math at an "alternative" high school and one of her courses is a financial literacy class where she teaches balancing a checkbook and that sort of thing. She wishes it was taught at every school. And I agree, realistically that is the only math the average person would need. I have yet to use any calc in a real world scenario. That's pretty cute/funny about Lisa.

there was once a test comparing american and japanese children.

They got maths tests they could not solve.

The american kids gave up quickly, the japanese kids tried and tried.

Think about it for a moment.

Oh, and algebra is simple.

and you use it all the time.

In Alberta, the kids have to have a course called CALM to get their diploma. My daughter took it in grade 10; they learned how to budget, how to do a basic tax return, how to put a resume together...there was some STD education in there, too.

My son was flunking math in grade 6 and I couldn't help him. I always did pretty good in school but I couldn't even google the crap they were teaching him. It made absolutely no sense to me. They would have spent their time better getting the kids to memorize times tables, but I guess that's considered useless now.

There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of teachers out there who feel the same way. This Common Core crap doesn't make sense to a lot of them and they're teaching it. Their problem is, do we throw in the towel and quit or do we keep going? I'm sure glad I retired when I did!

There was one statemnet made that I will always remember. And I remember it because I wondered what part the teacher would make in years to come. (I will capitalize it because it needs to be.)

EVERYTHING A PERSON NEEDS TO KNOW, CAN BE FOUND IN SECONDS ON A COMPUTER. (An administrater told us this in a conference.)

So where does a teacher stand in the subject of education? Once a child is taught to use a computer,
are we needless? So what are they teaching future teachers in college?

Anyone with the answers, lease let me know. I will forever wonder.

P.S. I forgot to say, I am also glad that I don't have to deal with this as a parent. Good luck to those of you who do!

Indiana will be the first state to end Common Core this week and vote in a regular curriculum. I think the vote is today? It's outta here!

I showed this to Dan, cuz he one of the smartest people I know, and he said..."uummm first of all, THIS kid is missing a finger and I don't like that those boxes are are outside the line of that circle!" Hahaha.
He couldn't figure it out either.

Oh and then he said, "this is very unprofessional." Lol

Jane, you can't ride a horse on a computer and you can't catch a fish you can eat. Besides, you google and have to figure out which information is true. That can take time.

Casey, that kid IS missing a finger. I didn't notice that. If Dan couldn't figure it out, then I know I can't.

OMFG! Lissa looked at it and got it on two seconds. According to the color boxes, the top circle should be blue and the bottom are red because they are the partners. She also showed the fingers and explained it. But, I be dumb ass.....still. WTF are they teaching these kids!!!!

I was always a top math student. But when my kids brought home those convoluted math problems and contrived situations that were supposed to strengthen their math skills and deductive reasoning, I felt hopeless. I figured either I was really stupid or it was the Text Book Industry deliberately obfuscating lessons to make them look like they were giving children valuable skills they could never acquire anywhere else. All that crap under the aegis of 'sophisticated' learning methods. I still say the best way to teach is the straight-forward approach.

Of choose she got it right, that kid is one smart cookie!
