Fake pregnancy, how common is this?

HERE is the story, in the news now, of a woman who fooled a whole town into thinking she was pregnant with quintuplets when she wasn't even pregnant at all. She met her boyfriend online and told him within one month she was preg with twins. (How would she know that at a month along??) Poor guy believed that because he was clueless, like most guys. But, it went on and he still believed her. He doesn't sound very bright. The town chipped in for cribs, diapers, etc and now they're mad. She just sounds crazy to me, not so much deceptive, if you know what I mean. She actually went to the ER to deliver because she 'broke water'. She was also lactating, but, the doctor speaking on there said, that claim was doubtful to him. That claim is the easiest thing to believe, for me.That doctor is a man. Sometimes even doctors are clueless.

Anyway, the comments are interesting to read. It seems this fake or phantom pregnancy is pretty common. Everybody has a story about it. I've known two chicks like this. One, I worked with and every time the bar where we worked got slammed, she'd go in the bathroom, stay for 20 minutes and come out saying she was having a miscarriage. I never did buy it, not even the first time, and it got so she'd pull this act once a month. But, I never called her out on it, it wasn't worth it. I just thought she was lazy and crazy and was always prepared to take the whole shift alone. She wasn't worth a shit anyhow. We have one of these women in my own family. She fakes pregnancy for attention. Sometimes it's twins and one of them always dies. She drags it out as long as she can. Then eventually the other twin dies and oh, the drama. She's nuts too. I never call her out either. I'm not a psychiatrist, so what's the point of confrontation? The best comment on there was "Real pregnant women had better look out for her. She sounds dangerous." For real. Some of these hoaxers feel they must produce a baby. That means pregnant women or new moms in the area aren't safe. We've all heard those horror stories.

Crazy bitches. Have you ever known someone like that?

not pregnancy - but one of my sisters always had backpain from her period whenever she was asked to help in the garden...

Ahhh, that's always good, because who can prove you're wrong?

Relieved to say that I've never encountered anyone who has done that. I do though have a cousin who had a baby at 19 and claimed to not know she was pregnant. "Mom I have a bad stomach ache!" take her to the ER and leave with a 4 lb preemie baby girl!
All I know is that I saw her 2 months prior, we went to a concert together - and she looked pregnant to me - a smallish bump. Waited for her to say something, she didn't so I didn't either. Found out much later that other family members also suspected she was. I think fear overrode any rational thinking on her part.

When I had my first daughter - my husband hung outside our house when of those "It's a Girl!" banners. I took that thing down fast. It just didn't feel safe or wise to advertise that there was a newborn in the neighborhood.

Pat, this is totally off topic, but I need to ask something.
I have been watching coverage of the lost flight, and they were showing pictures of some of the people on board. Normally, when I look at pictures like that, I get a strong sense of whether they are alive or not. Many of them feel to me as though they are not dead, or not yet. I am very confused by this and wonder what you think.

Connie, the first time I got pregnant, I was young and it was a huge 'sin' in my family, so I refused to even think it was true until I was seven months along. I was little, so I just wore baggy shirts. Women in trouble do crazy things. I got away with it for a long time. Eventually, though, there was no denying it and I got sent away to the bad girls home. Prison.

Christina, I haven't followed the missing plane at all because I knew it would drive me crazy. I hope you're right though. I do know many people feel the way you do. Stranger things have happened. There have been some real Gilligan's Island stories. I just read about a man who was rescued after being lost for over a year. And he had a tiny boat too.

Fake pregnancy terminates once every month? Lol. Really? Did anybody ever explain to that chick about having her period? Sounds like a complete dumbass. But in some ways, sad too. I don't know anybody that starved for attention.
