Matilda Ledger's Godfather is Jake Gyllenhaal. I didn't know that before, did you? The traditional role of Godfather (besides giving kick ass birthday gifts) is to take the place of a father in the childs life in the event of that parents death. When you say yes to being a Godparent, you never in a million years think that person could actually die. I wonder what his role in Matilda's life will be now? I wonder if Michelle will think Matilda needs him and what he's willing to do? The little girl has two Grandfathers, so maybe she won't expect or want anything..I don't know. It's still interesting. Man, that kid is cute..she looks just like her dad. Poor sweet baby.

It is hard to say. I always thought a "godfather" was more a religious thing and therefore if something happened to the person, then the godfather/godmother's responsibility was to make sure they followed their faith.
However, you hear about celebrity kid's having famous godfathers and not necessarily following any particular religion.
I do beleive part of the responsibility is to make sure they are well, stable and without need - so Jake, if he is a caring kind of guy (which he seems to be), I would think would at least try and offer to do stuff for the little girl.
I'm sure Lindsay Logan since she is so devistated over the death will step up and be a role model for the little one :)

Yeah I knew Jake was her Godfather. It is definatly his role now to step up and help Matilda with whatever she needs in life as a "father figure" even if he isn't asked. He accepted the position and obviously Heath though he would be a good man for it.
Never really saw a good pic of her, she does look like daddy. Cute! But I'm sure Jake being the man that he is will do the right thing, even if that involves just checking in occasionally & visiting of course. He's with Reese now & she has kids, this is a huge deal. & he's a good guy. He's a very family type guy. If Michelle or Matilda needs him, trust me, he will be there for that child.
I've always thought a God parent's duty was to make sure the child has a religion in their life in the event that their parent (s) pass away? And your right, DD, that little girl is just too sweet - my heart breaks for her :(
Only ones that i know of think that way about godparents are catholics @ have religion in their life.
Up until recent generations if you were a godparent and both parents passed, the children went to you to see to their needs, raise them, educate them etc. In essence your saying youll be 2nd parents to the child.
And i tend to agree with the other that Jake will step up and be involved on some level in her life out of love and respect for his friend.
Gawd, what did he see in Michelle? She is so homely and he was gorgeous. She always seems so mean and cold too.
i think these days godparents are just someone the parents are close to at the time the kid is born. i haven't seen mine since i was a kid.somebody owes me some savings bonds my friend!
