Three year old Madelaine has cancer and her family has to drive more than 100 miles from their Minnesota home every day so she can get her treatments. Simon paid off their mortgage with $162,000 of his own money to take some of the financial strain off the family. He did it on the Oprah show he told Winfrey that he “credits her” for teaching him to be a do-gooder.
Said Cowell, “I never knew that doing good could feel so good.”

I think he's being humble..I've never believed that Simon is a stranger to charity. It was a nice thing to do. Good luck, Madelaine, you are beautiful and strong and my thoughts are with you.

It would've been better if he'd just done it and not told anyone, but it's still a wonderful thing to do.

I watched this, and it was a really moving story....I have a whole new respect for Simon.

Thank You. It's good to see that I'm not alone in feeling this "charitable act" was improperly carried out.
I mean, really. The "Oprah" show? Could he possibly have chosen a more high-profile forum in which to reveal his charitable deed?
I'm sorry, but much as I'm thrilled that someone helped this family... I just can't respect the fact it was done is such "showy" and obvious fashion.
Every single day, average citizens donate their time, their money and their expertise to various causes to help those in need. Much of the time, they don't even get a "thank you"... and they know that gratitude is *not* what it's about.
American Idol (and Simon Cowell) has taken a lot of heat lately for what has been described as the "cold, heartless and cruel treatment" of it's contestants. Mental health professionals nationwide have been quoted as saying that Simon Cowell is responsible for driving many of these teenaged contestants --who were eliminated with harsh and often insulting words-- into psychotherapy. The harsh treatment has escalated in recent seasons strictly in the name of RATINGS.
I for one, do not have a "new respect"-- or any respect whatsoever, for Mr. Simon Cowell. I see his actions for what they are; nothing but a weak public relations effort to 'spiff up' his tarnished image.
I am done, done ... DONE.. with that show.

Do you think that the people on AI do not know what they are getting into when they CHOOSE to appear on this show? The reason people watch this stupid show is to see Simon tell them the harsh truth in the way that he does. (and always has)
The adults, yes.
The teenaged KIDS with their "pie-in-the-sky" ambitions of becoming the next Christina, Mariah or Britney? FUCK no.
And I wasn't referring to those kooks in the audition episodes... rather to the "final 24"... the group that has their hopes falsely- enhanced by the producers to create drama--- only to have Simon crush them by telling them they'll "never" have a singing career-- as the competition builds towards the finale.
i love simon
