Miss Tia sent me this info and I got a little upset (okay, very upset) at the way Ohio is handling the general fear of pit bulls.
*
If House Bill 568 is enacted any breed, “commonly known as a pit bull dog” will no longer be welcome in the State of Ohio.” Owners and rescuers of pit bulls will have only 90 days to surrender their dogs once the bill is signed. They won’t even have the opportunity to send the dogs to rescues, family or friends in other states. After that 90 day period, police officers believing that a dog is a pit bull will be allowed to apply for a search warrant to seize the dog. All dogs surrendered or seized will be euthanized within 10 days after the surrender or seizure. What does this mean for pit bulls? If passed any dog deemed a “pit bull dog” that is currently in a shelter will be euthanized and Ohio families will be torn apart as they are forced to surrender their family members. More frightening than that may be how Ohio police officers may be able to take dogs that look like pit bulls.

If the state government really feels like they don't want any pit bulls, then make an ordinance saying that no new pit bulls will be allowed. Don't take peoples beloved pets away that are already there! This makes no sense and is just mean and heartbreaking. Many of us have pit bulls in our family and we know that the dogs temperament and tolerance is almost always based on the way they were raised. We love our sweet gentle Rocco and would trust him with any child, baby or pet. I'm not just talking either..I let Rocco go in Lissa's room and she shuts the door. She tries to ride him, dresses him up like princess bride and otherwise humiliates him and pushes him around. That dog would jump off a building before he'd snap at that child. If someone passed this law where Casey J and Rocco live..we would be so heartbroken. It's so wrong and unfair. Check it out HERE. I hope the frickers get bloody ankle nailed by a vicious Chihuahua.

I am sure the families who lost a child to a pit bull or another *bull dog race will feel with the owners - not.
I am sure you are right. That's why we have to stop bad people and protect good dogs.
I actually live in Ohio and I have to comment on this. Ohio has some of the absolute WORST animal protection laws in the United States. As if that weren't bad enough, they are now trying to enact this bill that will basically do no more than kill hundreds of innocent animals. People need to be responsible for training their animals; if that were the case, this wouldn't be an issue. When did we stop taking responsibility for ourselves? Hopefully this will not pass (our beloved Dennis Kucinich is a vegan for cripes sake!), but will raise awareness of various other animal rights issues - someone needs to speak for them and if we don't, who will?
yeah, what's next? rottweilers? any other dog breed that attacks? if this passes in ohio, other states will surely follow!
it's the PEOPLE not the dogs!!!!! people who train dogs to fight should be JAILED! whenever i see someone walking their dog who's dragging a weight around their neck i yell out "you stupid fuck", and i don't care if those guys are carrying guns either! they're stupid fucks!
send your emails to protest this!!!!
Not just about the dogs, but this law is crazy. What kind of police state do you have there? Police can come in if they suspect you have a pit bull? Reminds me of the Nazi crap. How could this law even hold up in court? Last I checked Ohio is still part of the USA.
Just because it is a specific type of dog doesn't make it deadly. It is all about how the dog was raised. My dad has a rottweiler and the neighbor's call animal control all of the time to get rid of her just because they are scared of her. Now this is a dog that my 4 year old niece rides like a horse and is very gentle around my 7 and 12 year old children. We haven't even had her since birth. Her owner died and my dad rescued her before she was sent to the pound. She has never growled at anyone and is herself just a huge baby. Not all dogs are bad dogs, just a lot of bad owners.
Just FYI--this ban was voted down on June 6-- http://www.snponline.com/articles/2008/06/06/multiple_papers/news/allwhcounc_20080604_0313pm_4.txt
Well, that didn't work:

YAY! But, it will be back..everywhere.
yep, let your voice be known, so they know that they shouldn't even THINK about it again!
it is so hot today! it makes me think of all the doggies who don't have enough water or shade :( animal abusers should be tortured...
gotta go let pan get her in pool! i bought her an organic peanut butter dog cookie today...she's guarding it from the cats!
Many injustices upset me, but nothing so much as animal abuse and neglect. I don't believe in heaven or hell, but I hope there is some special retribution waiting for anyone who's ever been cruel to animals.

It's the bad owners that are to blame, not the dogs..Any one remember that book "No Bad Dogs"?
It's too bad that these dogs have become status symbols of some of these creeps who just want to give off a violent vibe. I'm sure you all know the type of person I'm talking about. They love to intimidate and deck themselves and their dogs up to look as scary as possible. I saw a guy like that one day and he had named his dog Hitler and he kept shouting his name so everyone would know it, and pulling back on the poor dog's leash like he was holding back a monster..... No wonder these poor animals have such bad reputations. And as for the ones who raise them to be agressive and fight, they should be jailed and barred from owning any animal forever.

This is the heights of retarded thinking. "Bad" dogs aren't born, they are created by worse humanbeings! End of story. Jackasses.
this is nothing compared to the atrocities if PETA ever gets any power.
That asstards want to KILL all pets. No matter what, where, why.
PETA hates animals
the ban that anon 9:50 referred to was not the STATE ban, that was a local ban...i just finally went and read the article....this is about a STATE BAN....
so that local ban didn't pass, we need the STATE BAN to not pass too!!!
my city is really restrictive with pits...you have to have a special green sign, they have to be muzzled when you walk them, they have to wear special green collars, you have to have a $50,000 liability insurance policy, they have to be microchipped, and you have to give the city 2 pix of them...not to mention they must be licensed, vaccination and all the regular things...
PLEASE email that congress person!!!!
i live in ohio & this is the first i heard that. it just goes to show a few bad people spoil it for everyone else. i do think that it is rediculous how that sounds, if they do enforce it. a big swat team breaking through your door & windows with a piece of paper & instead of saying 'where's your drugs' they will be saying 'where's your pitbull'. stupid.
NOW, what crosses my mind is, why arent they stopping the breeders & making it illegal for them to breed & sell them? it seems they are skipping a step.
also, for the record, i do believe that most other breeds of dogs are mainly vicious or potentially vicious because that is how their owner trains them or they are abused. but, a pit bull has been proved that there is something in their brain that can snap at any time & even attack their owner for no reason. that is why they are considered a vicious dog, even know they might have been the most gentle dog all their lives. but i do believe that bill is the wrong way to handle it.
i heard on the radio last week that if a bill goes through, it will be illegal to buy, sell or own a mylar balloon in california. stupid.
the ohio supreme court found in march 2006 that any law banning "vicious" dogs was unconsitutional. so if the state law gets passed someone with time and money ought to fight to get it knocked down
ha i looked again and has been iverturned in 2007
garbage
It's just incredibly unfortunate because people dealing with illegal gambling have some odd propensity towards pit bulls so they raise them to fight and they get this horrible rap. I heard that Jack Russell Terriers send more people to the hospital than any other dog. Granted they don't tear people to pieces...but still! There's no bad dogs, just bad owners. Unfortunately a lot of pit bull owners are awful. I happen to love pit bulls, I think they are the sweetest and have the cutest faces!
I'm back from a long break and I find this!!!! that is just sick! People just don't get it now don't they? there's no such thing as a bad dog. It's the owner who's responsible for the dog's behavior, who doesn't know any better!
