If you're too poor to eat beef, pork or ckicken and so poor that you have to resort to eating dog meat - and DD is correct, the only purpose a dog has is as a loyal companion and pet, you are probably too poor to be popping out hungry babies. Funny because people thought I wasn't Canadian because of my last name. My goal wasn't really to defend China, I was just giving another side of the story because people jumps to conclusion without understanding the whole situation. People are bias and prejudice and hence why I intervened and gave the other side of the story. You heard many things about China, but you never been there nor know anything about what kind of country China is. Things reported in the news are also by people like yourselves...

Anon---i agree with DD (oops, sorry to the anon that says i always agree with her! i don't always but on this i do)....dogs are companion animals...they are here purely to love us and want to please their person....cows, pigs, chickens aren't companion animals in the same league as dogs and cats (yes i realize some farm animals are companions for some)....i try not to eat too much meat if any at all....
so to compare hamburger eaters to dog eaters is like comparing apples to oranges...

Oh well...allow me to jump into the fray! I have met enough Asians in my lifetime to say that I didn't find any of them to be evil, annoying, or anything else derogatory. However, from the info I've gotten from a previous East Asia class and other sources (news, etc), while there are some aspects of Asian culture that I respect (thriftinees, hard work), overall, I am NO fan of the culture. So what do I do? I STAY OUT OF THE COUNTRY and mind my own hill-billy ass business, that's what. You stay on your side of the street, I'll stay on mine, and we'll all get along.
(On another note--Ramen noodles are MADE in China and are one of the chosen means of sustenance of college folk everywhere in the states. I'm sure they're quite easy to acquire in China!)

I don’t get why Larry is getting heat for “defending China,” and what this has to do with whether he is Chinese or has ever been there. It seems the only thing he’s been defending (and quite diligently) is a little tact on this message board along with some common sense added to the opinions posted here.
I can handle people having what I see to be the wrong opinion on something. But what I can’t stand is a blatant refusal to use the information right in front of them to actually learn anything and to form a sensible view about how things are and how they fit together. There’s a very big difference between stringing together a bunch of facts that, put together, have a very implicit connection to a pre-conceived conclusion and having a sensible view of the topic you’re discussing.
Here are just a few examples of sorts of “facts” we apparently should know in making up our minds about China and Chinese Culture:
Miss Tia’s line: “China” likes to put led in kids toys. Therefore China has so much disregard for innocent children that it has no objections to poisoning them. This must be reflective of how all business is done in China.
- I think a more reasonable interpretation is that a very bad decision was made by the head of an executive manufacturing firm which had been outsourced by a large, multinational toy company. The motivation for this decision would have been a strong top-down pressure to remain cost competitive in order to keep the contract, combined with a comparatively dismal outside option for a failed Chinese business man. In China, this mistake weighed heavily enough on the businessman’s conscience that he ended up committing suicide. In most other countries, the only people that would be hurt by this incident would have been a few lousy shareholders.
Miss Tia’s line: Chinese government officials must have bribed many, many people to get the Olympics. All Chinese officials are corrupt, and should not be trusted.
- bribes and corruption are in fact a part of every political system. Where ordinary people are given powers that they allow them to take advantage of others or to manipulate their circumstances, many tend to use them in this way. It’s unfortunate that this is quite a big problem in China (but it is certainly worse elsewhere). Now you could probably find hundreds, thousands of studies looking for an answer to getting corruption under control – if you find the one that is sure to work, please let me know.
Miss Tia’s line: The Chinese electorate supports an oppressive regime that is responsible for torture, killing, censorship, and therefore a majority of Chinese people support these acts.
- again, it would be naïve to believe that democracy is functioning in China. Chinese politics has a very long, dark history and these institutions are going to need a longer time to change. In fact, willing the political system to transform overnight would probably be a large mistake. It makes a lot of sense to protest inhumane government actions – but boycotting a nation does not.
Miss Tia’s line: The Chinese abort their children, especially when these children are girls. Chinese people must not respect human life.
- I don’t think I even need to go here.
Defend your views as you will as not having a single thread of racism, this line of defense is no better than the proverbial “I’ve got friends with different colour skin” argument. The problem is that you have used a few examples of things (none of which are particularly astonishing in the modern history of this world) to rage against and entire culture and its people. The fact is that you a have built up an arsenal of facts that lead to a dismal portrayal of an entire nation of people, and in doing so you have not only neglected to recognize that your sample does not represent the average person (not even close) but have also decided outright to ignore any of the variables that might give context to the situations you are protesting (it’s easier to just right China off altogether, eh?). Just so you know, it all starts sounding very racist.
If the main statement you'd like to make is that China is burdened with a lot of problems, so much so it is not a place I would ever want to live, and therefore the rest of the world should be working towards improving conditions there, I’d agree with you. Just don’t add “FUCK CHINA!!!” to the end of it.
And one more thing: apples and oranges are both round, juicy fruit (although they do have different colour skin).

I have been to China twice. First, I found this post very unsettling. Dog, turtle, snake... were all on menus throughout the country. Also, parts of animals that we are unaccustomed to eating were also on menus. Many people, Chinese and western, ate off the same menus with the same food choices. We, in North America, have very different menus and food preferences than people all over the world.
Second, China is filled with rampant poverty. This is poverty that most of us have never seen or experienced. The truly poor are not eating in restaurants... but do buy dog and other animals at open air markets. To hate them for this is uncomprehensible to me.
Many people who are strictly vegan would have many of the same feelings towards those who eat cow, chicken and fish that DD has about the Chinese who eat dog.
I, too, found this post very racist. I am not Chinese. I am not Asian. I am sickened by the content of this post. I have been a daily visitor to DD for over a year now. This is my last visit. This is far worse than being snarky. This was hateful and ignorant.

I took our baby puppy girl to be spade this morning and it was scary as we love her like the baby of the family. I thot of all this BS on here y'day about eating dogs and it broke my heart. Then I see how it went on all night! OMG! Intense! I could never even consider a dog as a source of food/protein. It's just something those people eat 'cuz it's available and no doubt cheap. Not 'cuz there is nothing else to eat. Beans & rice combined = the perfect protein. & they would be way cheaper than dog! Anyway, our 'widdo baby is gonna have an operation today and we are worried about her. If anyone ever loved a puppy, they totally get what I'm saying. i am an absolute dog lover, i live in hk and from australia originally. a LOT of people in China don't eat dog. only some do. its actuall mainly in southern china (guangzhou). The taiwanese used to eat dog till only 5-10 years ago (again, only a small % of taiwanese). the govt banned it and guess what they don't eat dog anymore. If you really wanna contribute to education, mind you its happening naturally as the pop'n gets wealthier they have pets and people anywhere don't tend to eat their pets, go to Animals Asia. Its a great charity that educates people about dogs.

If you are so interested in an answer, I strongly suggest you return to Holy Roller's post and read it through carefully, despite your reluctance to do so. Here is a summary of some of HR's points:
(1) You infer from specific incidences by specific people traits about all people that share a different (not clearly related) trait.
(2) You infer that aspects of the country/culture that you find morally objectionable are unique to that country/culture, and therefore characteristic/idiosyncratic of it (and its citizens).
(3) You infer that the objectionable acts of a government are representative of the will of the people, disregarding the evidence to the contrary.
(4) You willfully overlook the socio-political/economical/historical circumstances that are responsible for a given state of affairs.
Furthermore, the arguments you use to back up these inferences are weak, and give the appearance of 'rationalization' rather than 'justification'.
Each of these inferences on their own would indicate an error of judgement. Put them all together (even without your unkind language and aggro demeanour) and it indicates that you have an agenda: a racist one -- that you hate a certain culture/nation and all its members. AGAIN what does poverty have to do with eating dogs? I was just writing back and forth with Miss Tia about the situation for MANY in my home country, people who go walking 1+ hours on dirt roads just to get to work or school to make 2 bucks that day, and I have NEVER seen anybody eat what we consider pets.
Many of these people in extreme poverty just live on rice and whatever other vegetable is available, live in really brittle cottages on the water, or mud, have absolutely no utilities, and I still haven't seen anybody rasing dogs or cats or other things and selling them to the poor for food.
What leads me to believe that if in China, South Korea, etc the poor have money for dog meat, then they are perfectly capable of choosing something else to eat.
It's just a cultural difference, we are not used to eating companion critters, we are not wired to see them as food. Heavens know I wouldn't even if there was nothing else,I'd rather starve to death and not eat my cats, or dogs or the deer in my backyard.
To the person who stated "who cares about stupid dogs, worry about suffering humans" is bullshit. Sorry but humans have brought every single plague we have onto ourselves. That's not even questionable. Animals have no choice but to serve a purpose for humans, because humans make them.
And yes I have tried to see beyond what we get on the news about Chinese products. Just look at the tainted cat and dog food. It came from China! Look at the lead covered toys. Came from China! Too many thing that are harming us come from China! Too much coincidence? Don't think so. Dogs being companion animals is entirely a matter of opinion. How can you look at a baby calf and eat THAT? Just because dogs pant and look like they are smiling doesn't make them any better than any of the other animals you eat. Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of eating dog meat but I'm not a fan of eating any meat. We didn't breed dogs either, not up until the late 19th century anyway. They adapted to us by scavenging our primitive garbage piles and adapted accordingly. In mezo America dogs were actually used chiefly FOR food.

Don't forget we raise cows solely for the purpose to take their milk and kill them afterwards for their meat. In addition because of the huge demand for red meat especially from cows we are giving them growth hormones so they can grow faster, very humane. Did you ever realize that humans are the only animals that consume other animals' milk and consume it througout our lives not only as newborns? Well, besides cats, but we feed cats milk so I don't know if that counts.
All other animals (mammals for that matter) consume milk when young and then stop and proceed to consume other foods. Humans switch to cows' milk and never stop drinking milk throughout their lives. How weird is that? :)

I believe what started this all was your apparent intolerance (as well as others) to Larry’s point of view. If I may quote you, this was your response to Larry for having an opinion you did not share: “gee larry liu you don't have a public profile and you've never posted here before...how do we know you're not enslaved by the chinese in a little room forced to defend china on blogs and youtube?? how did you find DD??? googling anti-china rants???” This does not sound like respect for difference of opinion to me.
I think the problem many of us have with the comments you make is not that you have a different opinion, but that the extent of your anger towards China is not measured by the knowledge or experiences you have of China’s culture or its people. You have a small collection of media-filtered ideas that you use to stereotype the entire nation, and stubbornly dismiss anyone that challenges these ideas as being uninformed or irrational. Take this criticism as an opportunity to re-evaluate the basis of some of your beliefs, or go on believing everyone else is out to lunch but you. It makes no difference to me. Just stop whining that everyone else is being unreasonable and closed-minded.
