It's actually no different than when a major MALE celebrity (Matt Damon comes to mind) who chooses an unknown partner rather than someone of "equal status" in the celebrity, wealth & looks department.
And it's not just celebs who marry "out of their league"... it's not that uncommon at all and their reasons are relatively simple. Some people just cannot stand not being the more powerful partner in a relationship. And fortunately for them, there are plenty of submissive people willing to meet their match.

i recently saw an MTV program about Nick. He was engaged once before to some model (Victoria's secret?- can't remember)
He has this charity organization that makes donation to single parents.
