Yeah. There it is. I told you. My mother went through the great depression as a child, so now she's depressing me because she can't throw anything out. According to her, every frickin' can with a lid, every plastic bag, every piece of everything that doesn't smell (and some things that do smell) is good for something. Someday you will be sorry you threw (fill in the blank) out. Yeah, you might think this is funny..ha ha, a broken lamp hanging upside down from the clothes line is a bird waterer. Except it doesn't hold water because there's a frikin' hole. It then becomes a bird feeder, only the poor birds can't hang onto the sides..they flap and squawk and leave. I don't blame them. This might be amusing it there wasn't already 50 things like this in the yard in various states of decay and ruin. So, yesterday I was cleaning out the shed. "Oh, don't throw those old tires away!" Why ma? Because she can make something, they're still good. What, what are you gonna make with old dirty tires??? Flower beds, she says. They look cute painted like a rainbow and you plant can plant in them. No. No, you can't. NO YOU CAN'T. Sigh. It's best not to argue and clean it up later. She usually doesn't miss what I throw out. She'll find something else tomorrow. It's her art, I guess. I'd show you more, but, it's painful. I love the garbage truck.

old tires are FANTASTIC to grow veggies in!!! They retain heat--so make sure you water deeply and frequently.....
aside from the where the stand issue for the birds, i LIKE the idea of using a lamp like that! :)
yeah, i save stuff too!!!
Oh don't start. You're on her side now.
haha! you know some aquarium sealer would seal that hole and it'd make a lovely bird bath!!! :)
i like how your mom thinks!! very creative!!
Congratulations, your mom is a packrat!
My hubby is a packrat too.....he has that same philosophy, you don't know when it's gonna be handy..or worth money....ugh I hate it, he has like a ton of bicycle parts, cb radio parts, an old chrysler wagon full of crap, and even older chevy pickup also full of crap, and believe me they are an eye sore. I told him that I didn't want to see any of that when I step out the door. So he has managed to keep it out of my way. You should see his computer room.....is a box truck. I don't go in there, there's hardly a place to sit.
He likes to stop and check out the "free" stuff on the side of the roads. I caught him once redhanded, I was with a friend, she was like "isn't that shep?" so I called him on his cell phone "what the hell do you think you are doing!"...he was picking up free tires!
You should have seen the beaming look on his face, full of mischief!!!
He got the packrat gene from his grandfather, who was a collector, but at least he had valuable collections, most of them are now in the Smithsonian.
My mum got the packrat gene from her parents but even she was not as bad as them. One time she threw out some potatoes because they were a bit green and they retrieved them and told her off for wasting food.
I sympathise DD.
gees!!! i thought when i saw that photo "what a flash bird-bath" dd you have such great stuff, the window, those mugs, and now a great birdbath. but SHAME, it doesn't work. i do have a hint for the tyers (how the fuck do you spell that) though. you can grow potatoes in them. start with one layer and plant the potatoes and as they grow add another tire (tyre, tier - HOW the fuck do you spell it??) and just build them up until its time to harvest them. organic potatoes taste GREAT! my son hoards stuff too, we live in a small house full of old computers.
hehe I know how you feel. My partner's grandmother is depression-era. She lives next door to us and if we throw something "useful" out, she will dig in our bin and get it back out!
When I first started living with him, she had a key and used to come in whenever she wanted (usually she did his dishes lol), and we had a broken clock so we chucked it. Next day we went out, came back home and it was back up on our wall!!
Now we hide stuff in amongst bags of regular garbage so she can't see it and get it back out again lol.
I hate junk! My husband has embarrassed me a million times with junk! But sometimes he brings home good junk. Like doors and cabinets that can be recycled into our house. Some ppl throw out a good door just cuz they got all new ones, that doesn't make that door bad! & the cabinets he brought are great in my utility room. But some sh** is just sh** and needs to go to the dump. He does better than he used to and has not been bringing home so much crap. But like my g'ma 70 yrs old told him once when he asked to use her dead husbands chain hoist to pull an engine back in the 70's "No...I'm gonna be using that soon"! Yeah right g'ma! You are gonna be pulling that motor outta your car tomorrow! She couldn't even part with something if you were gonna bring it back! I have mixed opinions about this. I say if its broke throw it out. Hide if its fixable, sell it if it works and u dont need it. Or give it away. Dont leave any junk where it can be seen by anyone! That includes old junk vehicles!
