Poor Pete. He's weaned now and wants so badly to be a squirrel. I took him outside for his first outing this weekend and he climbed clear to the top of a huge Walnut tree..and stayed there until 9 pm, because of the cats stalking him. I had to sit out there in a lawn chair and wait for him to come down. I was hot and irritated. It's not his fault his mother is human, but, it's not my fault either. Mostly I see Pete in the window, Pete's silhouette hanging from the curtains, Pete flying at my head like some demented monkey. It's too soon to say what Pete's fate will be. It's clear he's too little to go it alone and he thinks of me as his family. He sure is a sweet little guy, even if he is a bit nuts. I guess they call them squirrels for a reason.

He's such a cute little baby.
Maybe you could get something like a bird aviary with a bit of tree in there with branches to climb on?
Just a thought.
I was just thinking that. Maybe just a big branch stuck in a pot so he can practice.
You were sitting shiva until 9pm waiting for a squirrel to come down out of a tree? Strong mother instinct there. You're a wonderful person.
mm
DD, you have done a wonderful job with that squirrel, he looks great!
Now, to go the last mile, and help him BE the squirrel he has to be, you need to learn how to prepare him.
Please, call a wildlife rehabber, you do not have much time left, Pete does not have ANY time left, to do this!!
Any wildlife rehabber will be happy to tell you how to prepare Pete to be a successful squirrel.
If you do the right thing and learn how to teach him what needs to be learned, you will be a good squirrel mama. If I can teach a bird to fly and watch my baby leave me for the sky, you can teach Pete what he needs to know.
And do NOT try to keep a squirrel in a cage once they reach puberty, he will go insane and may even chew his own hands off in frustration.
I helped put down a sweet squirrel last year that was caged too long, sad. Don't do that to Pete.
i agree with the last anon...contact a wildlife rehabber and they'll help you help Pete be a squirrelly squirrel...
awwww that so sad. you will have to relinquish pete. that will be so hard to do. when i first read the blog i had to think of my current situation. my old dog is blind and deaf and taking him to the park is just like you letting your squirrel up a tree. he runs around like he can see but he doesn't here me calling him and i'm really worried he will run onto a road. anyway i'm just back from the park, so i know how you feel. but at least i don't have to relinquish my doggy to the blind/deaf dog people to teach him to be a successful blind/deaf dog.
btw L O V E that window!!!!
Thank, I made that window meself. Thanks for all your advice, but, guys, I AM a wild life rehabilitator. Pete is my only project so far this year.
DD, sorry for my mistake- I should have known that you were all squared away.
Being a wildlife rehabber is a sure sign of a compassionate heart!
Did not mean to offend, just worried for Pete, the cute guy!
any advice for owners of deaf/blind old dogs running wild in local park?
and WOW LOVE the window. what an amazing multi talented person you are!
