The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Episode 1:Part 1

I was turned on to this by a reader in comments. It's brilliantly written and the actors are all top notch. The more you watch, the more you realize it isn't shit. You can sit right here and Tube should take you through the first season. It took me a few days to watch them all, but, I couldn't stop. It cracked me the fuck up when 15 year old Amy's mother, Molly Ringwald told her she wasn't going to raise her baby for her, that she had to get a job and pay for day care. The kid was like WHAT?? Good stuff here. Laugh out loud lines.

Oh yeah, this is typical pregnant teenager stuff. Upper middle class white chick gets knocked up, receives excellent medical care, parents are supportive and she's got not only the father of the kid but also her boyfriend wanting to be involved and help.

If they want to show teens an accurate portrayal, how about making her a poor, minority kid whose parents are too crack-addled to even realize she's old enough to get pregnant. She gets no pre-natal care, drops out of school, goes on welfare and lives in a shelter somewhere. That's the unfortunate reality for most pregnant teens. This show is like some bad 1970's ABC Afterschool Special on teen pregnancy where everything works out happily ever after. I don't give a damn how many PSA's they do after the show - it still makes teen pregnancy look like a walk in the park.

I hear ya, but, I didn't say it was accurate. I said it's a good show. Teen pregnancy is never easy. I don't care how well off your parents are. Been there, done that. Didn't have a daddy with money. Still like this show.

Holy shit.

Molly Ringwald's playing some TEENAGER'S MOTHER?

Great. (throws hands in air) Thanks for the little day-brightener, Dishy-do.
Like I don't already feel old enough.. ;-)
