Coleus

Coleus is an underrated plant. If you have a shady spot where nothing grows, plant these things. Who needs flowers when the leaves look like that? Mom has this irritating habit of buying flats and flats of ridiculous plants in the Spring and setting them on the porch for her "gardener" to deal with. She takes leftovers and plants them on the porch and they always look shitty. Except the Coleus. So this year, knowing they do well there, I put out 8 big earthenware pots of soil and hinted. She planted one and got tired. LOL. So I filled the rest with the Coleus. They're doing really well. They get real big. You can't tell from the pictures, but, those pots are good sized.

Those are pretty. I wish I had luck with flowers. It gets so dry in the summer here that I can't get anything to grow unless I stand out there with a water hose on them 24-7. I do have about 7 ugly tomatoes that my Hubs and I planted this year. We got so tired of buying those stiff ones (with no taste) in the store, so we decide to do our own this year. My Mom gave us the seed and started the plants for us earlier in the year. I checked them last week and they had blooms on them...so I am holding out hope that we will have REAL tomatoes. YAY!

DD, I am from Southern KY, and it is kind of mild here until Summer hits and then it can get horribly hot.

Great coleus! I appreciate pretty foliage as much as flowers now. I like coleus, they remind me of art lessons when I was a kid, the teacher liked using them as a drawing and color lesson.

I love coleus!

They make great houseplants too, but you have to nip the flowers before they grow and make an utter mess. I love to have pots of their color around in the winter months.

YAY! Thanks so much! I've literally been looking for the name of these plants for the last month and a half...my brother-in-law's mother told me about them, but I didn't write down the name. I'm horrible with plants, and you can't leave anything outside in the sun in AZ.
