A blue Jay who got too greedy. He refused to leave some scraps he'd found in the road and was hit. The other birds flew off and screamed warnings to him from the trees, but, this Jay paid them no attention. He was intent on having it all and not sharing. RIP greedy bird.*
I have been finding Sparrow wings under the awning at work. The Sparrow's like to nest under the old metal awnings. It's disturbing and it's been going on for about two months now. Several shop owners have noticed it too and someone blamed it on a Red Tailed Hawk. I thought about that and it doesn't fit. What ever the murderer is, it lives right uptown in the old buildings on the square. I think maybe it's a Great Horned Owl. I love Owls, I've raised one and rescued two others who were injured by cars. So I know a little about them. But, I love the little Sparrow's too, they're my favorite bird and they were nearly wiped out a couple of years ago by pesticides. They've finally returned and it's sad to find their remains on the sidewalk every day. Well, the mystery will be solved one day when someone spots the nocturnal predator and tells the tale. It will become one of those local legends, the large flying beast who lived amongst us, undetected...and didn't care for wings.

Poor (greedy) thing. I hate it when things like this happens!
Blue Jays are MEAN!!!! They are very beautiful but mean. & greedy, as you say. The sparrows are probably meeting their death via a cat or like you say a predator bird, like an owl. I say cat. Cats work at night and would totally do that. Our cats used to leave bird wings all over the yard. My money is on a cat.

Very sad today. Something is very wrong. It's coming. I hate it when this happens to me. I always know before I know. Ya' know?

There is no way for a cat to get into the nesting spots.
Rox, yeah. I hope everything's okay there.
Poor bird. I hate seeing any kind of dead animal. My outside cats kill birds, lizards, crawfish, snakes, and they leave them for me as a gift on my step. Nice.
Rox;
Having that feeling sux! I hope everything's ok.
Blue jays (or stellar's jays, the ones we have here) are mean and greedy. We have a couple here in the property, each time my FIL puts peanuts in the shell out there for the critters he comes flying and he totally acts like he's stealing them, scaring the other birds away. He gobbles one and then grabs another with the beak and flies away like with a "neener" attitude, makes me laugh. Stupid bird is hogs the bird feeder and likes to piss of the other critters. I saw one harrassing a crow out on the parking lot of the grocery store. I hope the crow taught him a lesson.
I've noticed that about blue jays too. The ones in my yard like to pick on the robins. But they sure are pretty.
Blue Jays drive me nuts, they're so loud. I found a baby one once and raised it and he wouldn't go away. He was crazy.
Good afternoon everyone
Gosh you all better be glad you don't live
up here in Toronto with me the blue jay
is our official bird and multitudes of them
fly aggressively all over the place. I guess
I'm used to them cuz I do like them and they
stick around during the winter months with
all the snow and ice in the city they are a
welcome site to behold November thru march.
This reminded me of when I was younger my mom decided to get a parakeet, just a couple months after I had gotten a kitten. She kept him on top of a bookshelf when we were gone during the day, thinking it would be out of "harm's way". Slowly but surely I realized that my cat was learning to jump a little higher every day. Eventually she made it - I shit you not - from the floor to the top of my bedroom door. She like ran up the side of the door. Anyways, I came home from school one day to my dad digging a hole to put mom's bird in because when he came home it was dead, but not eaten, and my cat was laying on the top shelf right in front of the cage. She must've gave the thing a heart attack. I still have that cat and my mom brings it up whenever she's around.
I've always thought there's something about sparrows...I get a little worried when I see more than one dead sparrow. Like nature is trying to tell us something.
KiKi you can have 'em. I like to sleep in..lol.
Biz, OMG, that's a sad story. When I was little that would have killed me. You poor thing.
KyliesMon, I know, right? They are so ordinary they're special and any upset in the sparrows is some kind of warning.
Kylie'sMOM, sorry..I'll typo myself to oblivion one day.
lol...that's ok :).
"...didn't care for wings." roflmao!!
Blue Jays are mean. They eat baby birds out of other nests. I always thought one of their cries sounded like my mom when she was hanging out laundry on the clothes line. She pinned on an item of clothing then *screech screech* as she pushed the line out on the rusty pullies making room for the next piece. It's annoying as hell at sunrise when I've been awake all night and am finally falling asleep. I don't much like the birds making that noise either.
I witnessed the grossest thing the other day! I watched a seagull swallow a baby(not real small) sparrow. The gull swallowed it head first, the legs were sticking out of the gull's mouth as it was gulping the bird down! Totally disgusting! I didn't know seagulls were cannibals!
Why would you post a photo of a smashed bird?
Shit happens, but does anyone here over the age of 12 really want the graphic up close visual?
Maureen, it doesn't surprise me. Seagulls are flying garbage cans. Outside the burger drive in, theyy are waiting for you to park and eat your burger, and wait around some more for you to throw them burger pieces at them. They race the crows to them.
If it makes you feel better, though I doubt it, my husband witnessed a bald eagle dive in to catch a seagull over at the pit where he works. Yes, the eagle had breakfasat, and he took pics of what feathers and beak were leftover.
Oh! I hope it was quick at least. I saw a raven eat a baby squirrel, just pluck it from the nest and fly away with it squealing. Traumatizing...
Jon & Kate are greedy, maybe they will find the front of a Chevy as well.
