Emmet

Meet Emmet. I see lots of snakes in the garden, but, most of them slither like the wind to get away from me. Not Emmet. He's figured out I mean no harm and now he actually yawns when he spots me, like, "You again, really?" He's always in the same spot, on the Gold Rush and in the beans. Sometimes I have to move him to pick. He's really very sweet and he's good sized too. His head (you can see it there looking at me) is small, but the rest of him is fat. About 3 foot long. If Emmet has babies I'll change his name to Emma. But, he has a boy feel to him.

I likes Emmet! He sounds awesome. So far, no snakes in our garden, but last year I found a big 'ol blacksnake hiding in our hotpokers and near our garden hose. He just bolted when he saw me. I'm guessing I gots me some bad snake-y juju.

I love the blacksnakes, they're so big and friendly. Emmet is a garter snake.

OMG Pat, you are brave. I am so damn scared of snakes. Well not trouser snakes. Can you tell my husband has been out of town for a few weeks? I have sex on the brain.

I thought our baby lovebird was a boy but 18 months later he started laying eggs.

Yeah he's cute though I can barely see him.

Hi Pat,

I don't live in the city so I find snakes and all kinds of critters all over the place down here in the hill country (Texas). Those Black snakes are beautiful and surprisingly friendly. Indigo we call them here, and in the sun after they shed they seem like purple liquid slithering across the pavement trying to stay warm when the sun goes down. They eat rattlers and coral snakes, which are also abundant. My horse won't even spook anymore and will just give the snakes their space.

When I worked in South Texas as a younger man I would see rattlesnakes as long as 6 feet and longer, and as fat as a baby's arm. When they moved it sounded like someone dragging a sand bag on the ground. Scary how big their heads get, but amazingly beautiful to watch.

Emmet is a good boy because he eats up a lot of the bugs that would nibble on your garden goodies. I'm skiddish with snakes but I'm fascinated with them too.
