Frimmy's Columbines

Frimmy has Columbines in her yard. She says she didn't plant them. Maybe someone else did or maybe they started from a stray seed and were allowed to establish. Columbines are magical and delicate. They grow wild here in Iowa and every year a stray seed will pop up somewhere. I've never seen white ones, Frimmy. I think the white ones are particularly pretty. They look like fairy skirts. Those pictures are beautiful and I really enjoy the close ups. Thanks!

Those pictures are so beautiful. I know about the flower but I've never seen one. Do they have a fragrance. They certainly are magical looking. Is is a vine or a plant?

I have pure white columbines I'm going to plant next year. We moved in too late in the season this year. These ones are special and I've carried the seeds with me for a few years now. They're from flowers my niece was growing in her yard in a fixer upper house she was all excited to show us one year when we drove out east. The day we were set to arrive she left her mom's house to get her place ready for our arrival and was killed in a head on collision en route. I will always have a space in whatever yard I have for "Roberta's Columbines".

Gardens become a kind of collection of beautiful spaces and plants that represent things which radiate peace to our souls and provoke pleasant reflection. It's so profoundly healing. I feel that all the time when reading your blogs about your garden.

As the years grow by, we incorporate uniquely cherished plants that have meaning for us. I think that's one of the reasons our gardens are so vitalizing to us.

Columbines are a perennial. The plants at my place range from two to four feet high. They have a swell of foliage with the flowers crowning stems that are a bit above the leaves. They are suseptable to leaf miner insects which will end up stripping them of their leaves but not directly kill the plant. I've had deep purple double columbines in some of my gardens. They look like little mums. I like the magical fairy skirt type better. =)

I can't believe you guys! Not only do you tease me with growing things in the richest soil in the country (no Joke) but then you show me flowers that just "sprang up" when I have spent countless hours (and money) trying to grow the same thing. My mother already tortures me with stories about all the wonderful things she grew during her youth in Iowa. We can't grow shit here in So. Cal. I have spent years trying to "fix this clay soil. Year after year I spend hours digging and mulching, and nothing! My only solace is that my parents who thought that they were master gardeners, couldn't grow a damn thing either, for 30 years. Ha!

p.s. I tried to register a name and identity but the site made it so hard I gave up. I really hate reading anon. time after time. By the way I have been reading for a year and and a half now. Regestering for a name was just as irritating as I thought it would be, but that seems to be the norm at most sites.

Anon, you don't have to register..just hit that little circle that says Name/URL and type in any name you want to use. You can put your blog addy in if you have one and it will link it. If not, a name is fine. I tried to make comments as easy as possible, I hate all that rigamaroll too.

Frimmy, I'm so sorry about your niece. That's terrible. Before I scrolled down to read the comments I knew those were special flowers. Now I understand why.

Frimmy, that is so special carrying on that perennial line from your niece. I'm so sorry she passed under those circumstances and timing, devastating. Those flowers are a gorgeous memorial of her. Take care

Yoou know, Frim, I think I knew they were special too. They are unusual for Columbines. They really do have a magical quality.
