Is this Valarian???

Miss Tia told me Valerian root is the natural derivative of Valium, it's a sedative and a pain reliever. I was like, wtf?.. are you kidding me? I recollect seeing it here, it's that odd flower that grows in moist pastures and boggy areas that never seem to dry out. I should be harvesting this stuff by the truckload and making Valerian tea by the barrel. All the websites I hit said now is harvest time. Holy crap on a cracker! Road trip! Uhh, it bears a strong resembance to Hemlock though. If I don't come back, you'll know I needed a field guide. Ehhh, you never learn anything by not trying. Here's to ya!

Thanks! I like that site. I am going to find this stuff and use it! Maybe not today though..the freekin' car feels like an oven. Nasty heat here. Can you imagine? Free Valium, no scrip? Man.

you're welcome!!! When you said hemlock I thought about the evergreen, I didn't know there was a bush too. I guess like the poison oak. But yeah, no kidding, free and legal relaxers!!

The hemlock leaves are shaped different, the valerian leaves are bigger too depending of the type (I did a little research now as I wanted to know too :) )

I have Hemlocks I grow here. I use them for magical reasons..don't worry.

Well, after you mentioning Paracelsus yesterday, I had to look it up. And there it was, poison is only toxic if not used with correct dosage. There are many things I'm learning here!!

DD, I think I mentioned before my dance teacher is trained in Eastern Medicine, we were joking with her on Sunday because she didn't know what to "label" herself for marketing purposes. I just said "witch doctor", and she laughed!! Weren't "witches" harassed and tortured because of their ability to work with herbs and natural medicine?

I always come here "with hungry mind and open eyes". Thank you for sharing yourself.

From what I understand the witch trials involved very few actual witches, if any. That time was a mess of problems, men who got off on torture and power and awful females who caused death by gossip.

Yeah, I remember now reading somewhere that once someone started accusing a woman of witchcraft, they used to make her "confess" and name names. For fear of whatever torture, they used to point fingers to just random innocent folks. It sickens me to know the people back then enjoyed watching torture, beheadings, and other public death sentences, like it is some sport. Same as when people were fed to the lions in ancient Rome for the crowd to enjoy. Not that it is any different now, really.

yes, it IS valerian!

i suggest you go to a local drug store that sells herbs and SMELL the valerian capsules....walgreens, rite aid, cvs, etc any place that sells vitamins usually has some herbs in capsules...just open the bottle and smell....

you want the ROOTS...when you dig up the plant you WILL smell it and if you have smelled the capsules prior you'll know you have the right plant...

the flowers are not white now, but the tops remain....

i'd be out there chewing on some branches!

yep those cows have their big doe-eyed vacant look for a reason.

I'm totally with Meissa2112 about what I'm learning here. It's enlightening and uplifting.

Can you imagine what this place will be like once I find Valarian?

haha...just go to a walgreens and buy some!!! or go to puritan.com and order some!!! i order vitamins from them and have gotten oils and herbs in capsules...they have great deals, right now it's buy 1 get 2 free....

buying it is a LOT easier than having to dry it and with buying it you are more sure of the potency....you have to be careful with that...

do NOT go dig some up and drink a lot of tea from it! you can buy it from some places loose too...if you did that, just have one pot of tea a day...use one of those tea balls and have it soak for 10-15 minutes...just a 4-6 cup tea pot...

respect the herbs and they'll be your friend! :D

Tia, I really really live in the sticks. You can't buy herbs here. You can;t really buy anything here. No clothes, no furniture, one grocery, 100 miles from a real town. Traffic doesn't suck though.

And..we got the Internwet 10 years after everyone else. Uhh huu. We just recently started having to use the first 3 numbers when we dial our phones.

well you could always buy some from puritan.com i have used them and they are reputable...

3 bottles for 8.99 + shipping
http://www.puritan.com/valerian-509/valerian-root-450-mg-003390

the capsules are probably better than tea cuz it is sort of harsh tasting and sugar does not 'sweeten' it...i'd say it's sort of bitter...

Dirty Disher said...

Thanks. I am going to do that. I don;t care if it tastes like dog shit as long as it works. I am a nicer person on pain pills.

Anonymous said...

well using the capsules, you don't really get the taste....you might get residual taste as you wash them down, but you can drink coffee, juice, etc to counteract it....

capsules better to deal with than the tea---and cheaper too!!!

Hi, I'm writing you a bit late. It's a common misconception that Valerian has anything to do with Valium. Valerian is a nerve sedative and is good for things like menstural cramps and taking the edge off so you can sleep easier. It does not have an effect anywhere near Valium and, again, they are not related whatsoever. You will want to use the root. The best way is to make a tincture of the root. You can use 100 proof vodka or brandy if you want to get fancy. Valium is not very toxic at all, go ahead and make tea from the root if you like and don't worry. But a tincture will be more effective.

Valerian smells like used gym socks that have molded for a week. Eventually you will exude a bit of this smell if you use a lot. So will your animals if you use it with them.

Re: hemlock, it's extremely toxic.
It lloks more like wild carrot/Queen Anne's Lace ut does not have the purple dot in the middle of the bloom which wild carrot has.

Most of the carrot family is poisonous.

Valerian is not in that family.

Good luck
