I've been perfecting my fried green tomato recipe and I've eaten more than my share now. I can't leave them alone. I got more Zuchs in today and I just thought, OMG. I was just now hungry for a good snack because dinner was really light and I was mowing. So, I used the fried tomato recipe for the zuccini. OMFG, you won't believe how good it is. It tastes a lot like when you order deep fried cauliflower as an appetizer. Very similar. I am making a pig of myself here and I don't care. Oink.

If I keep gardening I may eventually become a cook. Here's a hint I found by "denial and error." When you slice up the tomatos or zuchs lay the slices on paper towels and let them sit quite a while. Change the towels as they get wet or use a terry towel. The longer you can let 'em set and dry out, the better the breading sticks to them. I let tomato slices set for a couple of hours, it really works better. None of the websites said that. Zuch's don't take as long to dry. I tried a lot of different breading, but, I've decided I like breadcrumbs the best for breading.

Yes, the drying off really makes a differance. I know you live in bumfuck Iowa, but check at the HyVee for panko breadcrumbs. They are kind of pricey but are kickass killer kruncy. They are Made from some kind of weird Japanese rice bread. If you can't find them I will mail you a box.
I understand the need for moderation but it really messes with the flow of conversation LOL
That is so cool! The more you learn and pass on to us, the more I adore you! I'm not that great of a cook, but all the ideas you share are so easy to remember. I'll keep filing away all the techniques, and soon I'll try them out for the family!
I can make simple suff good, like fried chicken, pork chops, mashed taters and good gray, stuff like that, but, I never was much interested in learning how to "really" cook. I didn't know about spices and herbs and well, the good stuff. I'm learning a little because I have this nice garden and it's all free. I sure do like fried green tomatos and fried breaded zucs. I could eat them every night. Probably shouldn't but, hey..I lasted this long.
Will do, escrow.
We'll go off moderation in the daytime soon and I'll only put it on when I work or sleep.
Pat, if you can make real mashed taters and gravy and fried chicken you know how to cook.
DD;
Yes, breadcrumbs are the shit. And I just found out a couple of days ago about letting tomatoes and zukes dry out first, in the new issue of Vegetarian Times. It says to do so in some of the recipies. In fact, I read when drying out zukes, put sea salt on them, then when they're done drying, rinse off the salt, then dry them off with paper towels. There are some great, and easy recipies for zukes and tomatoes. I'd be happy to email some to you. I'm going to be trying a lot of them this week.
Panko breadcrumbs could make fried liver taste delicious.
That's a really good tip. I'm going to try the fried green tomato's. I actually have a ton of those growing in the garden. It's something!
Yes, I forgot to say salt them as they're drying! Sorry and thanks.
Escrow, I can cook enough to not starve..lol. I make good pies.
AHHHHHH.....pies and pastry along with gravy are a dying art...what is your favorite pie?
Apple!!!!!! But, I never met a pie I didn't like. Damn, now I want pie... thanks..LOL.
Don't make fun of another old classic...liver and onions...and you can actually make some really good gravy out of those pan drippings to go over those mashed taters LOL...YUM
I live in the deep south, and fried green tomatoes are in my blood.
One small tip I might add? Just a touch of sugar, and I mean a touch. Like sprinkle a bit in your hands and then dust your hands off over the tomatoes.
This adds a glorious crunch to them when fried.
I want a boysenbery pie from Knotts Berry Farm
MMMMMMM fried maters....I had to make fried green tomatoes a couple of days ago, after seeing your FGT post, and I also made chicken on the cast iron griddle with a homemade bbq marinade, and couscous. It was yummmmmmmmy!!!! I made enough to have leftovers the next day. We had tacos tonight, and for dessert Miss Tia's ice cream pie made with frozen oj instead of lemonade. Good stuff.
I like liver and onions once in awile. It's good.
SharnaPax, since you're a real Southern gal, I promise to try it. Maybe tomarrow. I'll let you know how it went.
boysenbery pie? I don't think I've ever had that. If it has berries and is in flaky crust, count me in though.
And I'll put a pic on too. I was too tired from mowing two places to even find the camera. I was HUNGRY.
MMMMMM berries....You know, this has been a good year for the native blackberries, the red huckleberries and the blueberries here where we live. Last year sucked, we got not one single blueberry from the patch. Also I was amazed I saw as many salmonberries as I saw this year. I wish we had thimbleberries in the property...those are yummmmmmy!!!
I wish Tia would post that recipie again, I can't go on that garden site, Meissa. That chicken sounds yummy.
A boysenberry is a cross between a rasperry and a blackberry. And this guy did it in SoCal and built his empire along with his wifes fried chicken, mashed taters and gravy, biscuts NKA Knotts Berry Farm....it's now growm to a a mini Disneyland but you can still go to to the original resturant without paying the fee
Pat,
I love fried zuc's! I use the sea-salt drying on eggplant too before I bread and bake it for eggplant parm.
I have made Miss Tia's pie about 9 times so far and I even have the fam asking if Miss Tia is arriving for dessert on any given night. I just want Miss T to know that she has established after dinner immortality at my house! I've made it with OJ and also lime juice. No matter what you use, it is a sweet tooths wet dream!! Thanks again Miss Tia!
Sharna, Thanks for the sugar tip. I have learned so much here!
Blueberry pie, apple pie and pumpkin are all near and dear to my heart!
I also LOVE the new header!
Is the post time correct are you all up in the middle of the night? Just wondering?
I don't understand?
Why interupt this conversation about food. With this Random nasty post above?
By the way DD, Scotty is so proud of your cooking and tips. love the pics of food.
Anyway to make spell check work? I'm so spoiled.

DD would be paranoid drinking alphabet soup. Man is she a caseload for any shrink, a shrink's wet dream. A paranoid manic with an anger issue.
I don't have a crystal ball, but the path she is taking, I can already tell with COMMON SENSE, she is going to be a lonely miserable lady for a very long time until she loses all of her teeth, suffers through hemorrhoids, bursitis, arthritis and all other itis's. Good thing dementia is on the way, put her mind out of her misery.
DD....add some more fiber to your diet, you are Ms Wrinkling Up CRANKY PANTS.

I think the flying buttress's butt would be better to look at then her shriveled up face. Anger will do that too you, age you fast, plus add smoking and the sun and drugs and you have a heart attack waiting to happen. How old is she, 80?

Why are you giving these jackasses on other sites the time of day?
Seriously, they look at your blog hits and try to up their blogs when people chat about them here.
Seriously, if Moon or anyone else for that matter had a problem, it would have been brought up earlier.
You are being played. Ignore it. It's all sockpuppeting from gwop that is driving this.

Panko Bread crumbs can be found at discount stores now for much cheaper then they used to be. My hubby likes to use Progresso brand Panko that has italian seasonings. He uses it on a whole chicken breast recipe he made up.
We like to slice zucchini into sticks and eat them raw with dip. Mmmm!
I have also made Zucchini Parmesan. Just like the eggplant version.
Slice into circles (sweat them out like you described) , dip in egg wash, and then bread crumbs. Let them sit on a plate for 5-10 min until the breading gets kinda sticky.
Then fry with oil in fry pan until golden on both sides.
Then in a casserole dish put down sauce, zucchini, sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Bake at 350 deg until the sauce starts to bubble and the cheese is melted.
Mmmm!
Anons are so cute arent they?
What a cute little anon? Woogy woogy woogy.
Now go back and play with your friends while the adults talk!
Hey Pat, my grandmother dunked veggies in egg first before breading.... she said it makes the breading stick better... have you ever tried it???
Anon 5:37, I'm not sure why the copy and paste from other blogs. What I am sure as heck is that while DD and others have poked fun at people who are in the public eye, "celebrities", specifically those who behave like dumbshits, it has never been stated that you cannot poke fun at the bloggers. You can mock whenever you want say whatever you want about the blogger, it's fair game. Call the blogger names, whatever, tell them they're wrong, they're insane, a bitch, anything. The problem is when you cross the line and go into sensitive territory and shit and vomit all over it, and mock someone's death, and someone's little child and fire accusations in the way it has been done lately.
So the whatever the "fascination" people talk about, there it is. Nobody is getting up in arms because a dimwit has called DD a bitch. She can defend herself. We are upset because we were there when Eric died, and most of us can relate to the pain of losing someone. We are upset because we have seen nasty comments against her 5 year old grandchild, Eric's daughter. Too bad it appears to be from a G troll, towards a non-fan. Oh and this is not a G blog. There's no 'child advocacy' mission statement here. They happened to be mentioned here because this used to be a celebrity blog, the parents are tools and in public they behave like tools. If they didn't behave like tools in public, then there would be nothing to comment about.
So what if DD wished she'd be a better mother. That's not even something that should be used as a comment. Don't you ALL mothers out there wish the same for yourselves?
Go to the cached version of this blog, or the Google Reader or whatever, and find ONE comment made by DD mocking a child in the nasty way it has been done to Lissa. Find ONE comment made by DD where she makes ill fun of someone's death like it has been done towards her son. I'll stand corrected if you do. Good luck.
So please tell me...how do you do the fried green tomatoes? I want to fry some so bad, but would rather have the steps laid out for me! lol
Thank you!!
I've only had fried green tomatoes once--at the Whistle Stop in Juliet, GA. Oh, boy, were they good.
I've never heard of panko bread crumbs. Is that a brand?
Guess I better grow some tomatoes, first! I had the bug when I was reading LambsQuarter Gardens, but as with so many things it flitted in and flitted, just as quickly, out of my head. Then I was sorry, but it was too late for this year. I may just find a garden stand and buy some.
I love pumpkin pie--can eat a whole one by myself if I don't watch it, apple pie ala mode--um um. Oh, and I can't forget chocolate.
Well, now...what shall I have for lunch!!
Hey Anon 10:45 - While I know that you are trying to sound articulate and intelligent your post does not make sense. Well Done!
Considering your below average intelligence, I want to make sure that you understand mine so I will keep it simple - Fuck Off.
Sorry, I'm still not used to moderating and it slipped through.
Nadine, you're the only person I know who cooks less than me. LOL. Yeah, I use the eggs first. Your Grandma did it right.
oh, yes, use panko crumbs like escrow said. yummy, i use them to make chicken fingers, got to season it though. now i am starving........i think i will change it up a bit and make chicken thumbs!
Kim:)
LOL @ chicken thumbs. Just don't make anything naughty. LMAO!
Coyote: Panko crumbs are a kind of japanese bread crumb
After reading this thread I can't wait for my tomatoes to start forming. Before I couldn't wait for them to ripen. I don't think they'll get that far.
My all time favourite pie is sour cherry. I love a good rhubarb & strawberry sour cream pie though.
I'm not a good pastry maker - no patience - so I cheat by making a standard shortbread crust and add some flavourings depending on the filling. Like grated lemon rind in a slightly sweetened shortbread crust for lemon merangue pie. I use that one for strawberry pie too. I use a gingerbread cookie crumb crust for pumpkin pie.
So this moderation thing...is that why my comments don't show up right away? Last time I thought my page was acting up so I probably ended up posting twice.
Frimmy, I never thought of doing the shortbread thing with a pie!! Good hint. Thanks!
How do you make the rhubarb/strawberry/sourcream pie? That sounds very interesting.
Thank you, frimmy. I'll look for them the next time I'm at the market.
Nina--glad you enjoy the pie!!! And i know you've enjoyed it Meissa2112!! :D
here's the recipe again for DD!!
1 graham cracker crust
1 pt. vanilla ice cream (softened)
1 8oz tub of cool whip thawed
6 oz. of frozen lemonade thawed (most places you can't find 6oz cans so you have to get a 12oz and just use half)...
blend the softened ice cream with the cool whip and lemonade...the ice cream should be creamy like---like thawed cool whip, not totally runny...add the lemonade...you can also add some yellow food color if you like...
pour into the graham cracker crust and freeze for 4-5 hours...
it is very TART, yet creamy and sweet and very refreshing on a hot day!!!
Thank you Tia!!!

Frimmy,
OMG my mouth watered just reading the recipe...I'll do this tomorrow. The farmers market has beautiful rhubarb.
Now, you too will be immortalized at my dinner table with Miss Tia!
Thanks soooo much!
Someone wanted my fried green mater directions..I just slice tomatos, dry them, dip them in beaten eggs, and dip them in bread crumbs. Fry on medium heat for a few minutes on each side until golden brown.
You can add any kind of stuff you like to the breading, I use garlic, basil, roemary, sage, parm cheese, chives..anything really...or none of it. That's what's cool about it, there's no rules.
Geeesh @ Pat, now you are turning into Julia Child and I'm still struggling with Hamburger Helper hahahaha.... noooooooooooooooo the kitchen is not for me ... its a dangerous place to be... :)
If I can do it, anyone can. You're still the only person I know who makes chocolate sammies.
Noelle, I laughed when you said Scott reads the cooking posts. He's the expert. Ask him if he ever got anything to eat at my house? Poor guy. LMAO! Remember that time I fixed hot dogs for you, Noelle, and I burned them. Oh, man. It had to get better, there is no way it could get worse.
funny!! You made the best bologna sandwich once. lots of onion yum!
