Dakota aka Kodes: 8 yrs old Intelligent, Loveable, Tornado always busy busy busy high maintenance has Fetal Alcohol Syndrom (FSA), Sensory Integration Disorder (SID), and ADHD. For those who are not familiar with SID many people who have autism may have SID they may not like to be touched or need to be hugged tightly, tags on clothing bother them to the point of freaking out when a tag is seen, Kodes does not have autism but has the type of SID that he needs to be tightly held to the point some think we are hurting him when we are holding his wrist, when he was younger he would run into walls hard to feel the wall (he no longer does this) He is very good with animals he takes very good care with my assistance of his Gerbils I get to clean the cage but he makes sure they have fresh water and food daily and also holds them daily. Dak is all Boy loves sports and playing catch, the dog will have to be able to listen for hours about Nascar and who drives what car may even have to race Dak around the yard for the timed trial thingys that they do, the dog may have to pretend its some famous baseball, basketball, or football player.

Sierra aka ShayShay aka J-Lo got nothin on your booty...She was suppose to be my Tammy but ended up being my Tommy she will be 2 yrs old in October she's MEAN and will place herself in the corner along with everyone else..she is told when you are able to be good you can come out of the corner to which she will reply Shay Stay Coner. She too loves animals and does a great impression of a puppy. So with her the dog will have to be able to stand with me and other family members in the corner for lengths of time she likes to rough house and can take a knocking down without crying she also loves throwing things so a dog that can play catch with her she would enjoy.
*****
And here is what SHE thinks..
"Here is the REAL tricky part what MOM wants hahahaha: A smaller dog preferably not over 20 lbs. I have looked at the Havanese breed and they sound very close to what I am wanting, of course I am not a rich woman so my puppy/dog will most likely be rescued from a pound and not an AKC breed. Not to offend anyone but I am not the Chiuahahahahaha lover. I need to be stress free and they make me nervous nor do I think it could handle my lovely 2 children."

Help her out, people, it's a major decision and a longgggg term responsibility. But Connie can handle it. Dak is her wonderful beautiful adopted son. My advice, don't get the one in the picture. He'll eat your shoes and a bus and he definitely looks like a dog I'D end up with. But, he's cute, isn't he?

What a devil dog!!!
It that what Kate will be when she's reincarnated?
well they are not small but a lab would be gentle enough to tolerate being handled by kids...
smaller, though not 20# breeds to think about...maybe a aussie....or a jack parson/russell terrier...pan is mostly parson russell terrier...
i would recommend a breed that is a quick learner...and known for gentleness...
Labs are gentle and tolerant..but, GD, for the first two years they're just goofy. They are! If you have kids to watch too, it's a drag trying to train a lab. And that tail knocks over everything.
please tell me that was photoshopped, if not whoever owns must really love it.
i have three maltese, loving, happy personalities....not hyper or yappy imo
I know people will say I'm nuts, but, I've had lots of dogs and the ones that were real kids dogs were the Pits. If you can find one that hasn't been abused or a pup, man, they always train up real easy, they can't be hurt by a kid, they're rough as a cob, but, gentle, very tolerant and they're loyal. Never had one that was a pain in the ass. Short hair, easy to keep groomed. You have to put up with shit from people who buy into the myth though, that's their only draw back.
That's just someone's happy Pit playing. They're funny.
springer spaniels are a good family dog, my hubby has had 3-4 over the years, never had a prob with the kids and the dogs, very protective. down side...they like to yowl
I hear that boxers are really good with children. The drool could be a factor but then, that would go with many dogs.
boxers are boxy! poli is almost 6 months and a little over 50# and she is a TANK....
funny as hell though! boxers have the most expressive faces!
i have a friend who has a king charles spaniel...very good with her grandson and very protective....
If you can get through the first 2 years with a Lab, it's so worth it. Hands down, they are the best dogs for kids, in my opinion. Pits are a close second though...I've never known a bad Pit. They are super smart and trainable and so gentle. Poor things have gotten such a bad rap. We had dibs on a Pit puppy when my daughter told me that one of her friends wouldn't be allowed to play at our house anymore if we got the dog, so we caved and went with a Lab. We just didn't wanna deal with all the bullshit. Maybe Swamp Witch can go through a rescue and find a dog that's past it's puppy stage.
Boxers are AWESOME dogs, good family dogs. Super smart. But, they are hyper. Need lots of run time.
How about a poodle? A standard one. Great dogs, don't shed, smart, big enough.
I have a Shih-tzu, and it is the best dog I have ever had in my life (I'm 44!) They're as energetic or as lazy as the family needs, lovable, loyal and if shaved (I live in Sevilla, and the summer temps are over 120F) look like little Pugs. Mine weighs about 7 kilos..ie. 15lbs. I am a cat person, and also have a siamese, but would give my life for my shih-tzu ... aka Pancho
I have a Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab mix and she is the sweetest dog, great with children, but is the NEEDIEST bitch I have EVER met.
I have a retriever / lab mix too, and he is the sweetest thing ever, but Dish is right, the first couple of years were tough. But, right at 2 he mellowed out. His name is Max, we call him Maxie pad, and when my 5 yr old is outside yelling at him I bet the neighbors think were nuts..."MAXIE PAD, COME HERE!!!"
sb
I'm not an expert on breeds but I have a good amount of experience around a whole bunch of different dogs. I would say first and foremost --- GO TO A SHELTER. We were all set to spend a couple grand on a Newfie then we went to an adoption fair and realized how many dogs need help. I can't imagine our life without Angus (lab/pit/akita). If you get a dog (instead of a puppy) it might be easier on you because they typically have a little bit of training--like housebroken and they're already thru the puppy phase which could involve lots of hyper activity and don't forget the mouthing/teething (even when playful it can still hurt, especially children. As far as the breeds go I'm a firm believer that all dogs are a product of their environment, yes breeds have histories/stereotypes but it depends on where they come from too.
That's just my own 2c tho, not trying to preach. Good luck in whatever you decide! I think it is so great and important for kids to be raised around animals.
I would second the recommendation for labs or pits. Pits were originally bred to be around kids. I would watch a herding dog, they tend to try to herd people and nip at heels at first. I have a lab/border collie mix and she's great with kids, but I had to ride her case like crazy about nipping heels. She was also a dang maniac for the first few years, energy whew!
I heard that boxers are good for kids. They are active and athletic so they would be perfect for a child that has a lot of energy.
There is nothing wrong with getting a dog from a shelter however you never know what you are going to get health and personality wise. Some dogs have been abused, and some dogs might have inherited traits that might be recessive in purebreds. The statement that mixed dogs are healthier isn't really true.
Lastly, people like to criticize other people for getting purebreds. I think this is wrong. People buying purebreds from breeders aren't the reason why there are so many dogs in shelters. People that don't look after their pets and let them breed with other dogs are the ones that are guilty of so many dogs in shelters.
I did not say 'mixed dogs are healthier' and I didn't criticize anyone who chooses the pure bred route, I was only making a suggestion. As I said I am not an expert. Just going from experience.
my 2 doggies are rescues! go to a rescue that keeps their pups in homes if possible instead of a shelter...the rescue i got mine thru keeps their animals in foster homes where they get constant love and attention and exposure to kids, other animals, etc...
Our first dog was a beagle mix named Pokie (like the puppy). She was my friend`s dog and she could not keep her when she moved. Pokie lived with us for seven more years until her death of old age.
She was THE best dog. Very smart. Very loyal. Loved to play catch. She did not leave the yard and we had no fence. She would stand by the door with her legs crossed before she would EVER do it in the house.
She was my breaking in dog. I never had one before her.
So beagles..pure or mixed are my top choice for dogs in the 20lb and under range.
She could be barky but she was smart enough to know when to shut up..LOL
So that is my advice.
And I have had many dogs.
We have a pomeranian, 9 months old now. He is great with my kids 12 and 8, and with 2 cats. very affectionate and loyal. Despite the reputation smaller dogs have to be yappy, he isn't at all. He has barked at one person since we had him, that's because she had glasses on and he's never seen someone with them before. He is full of energy. Sometimes runs back and forth in the yard or house full speed for 5 or so minutes, it's hilarious. Very very affectionate. Loves to be pet. And, his poopies are tiny:).They grow to be about 10 lbs. i think. We got the runt so he's a little smaller. Again, not yappy like chihuahuas. I was never really a dog person before, he has changed my mind.
I second the advice to go to a shelter. Shelter dogs can be very loyal. Plus you save a life.
Forgot to mention that if you do a little research you will find rescues specifically for pure breds.
poli is a pure bred boxer! her mommy and daddy were running loose in a city and the warden was taking them both in a guy showed up and claimed the male was his dog and he didn't know the female dog...the warden wasn't a fucktard and the guy admitted they both were his and he was a breeder but no one was buying the puppies so he only wanted the male....they took BOTH...
the rescue group i got mine from took in both mom & dad and mom was pregnant! she had 8 puppies and i got poliahu! (who was the runt amazingly enough)....panacea was the runt in her litter too...
OK, I have not really read through all the comments since my boxer one. Boxers are boxy but fantastic. Poodles, mhee, not a fan (what about a Labrapoodle?!?! My neighbour had one and he was great albeit quite frenzied...).
I have always wanted a beagle! But have always resisted as they bark sounds like seals in heat (nothing wrong with that but am already dealing with a 17 year old neutered cat who makes our hair stand on ends when she howls). I've had two dalmatians - LOVED my first - she was smart as all hell even though people will tell you Dalmatians aren't. I miss her to this day. Our second - yeah, he was a spazz with not much brains but fun as hell and good with kids.
I vote for Retrievers. I have a Golden (Sedgewick) and a Chocolate Lab (Toots) 3 & 2 and I have to agree with you DD they are GD goofy the first 2 years. But they love everyone and are not watchdogs by any stretch. Finding them thru rescue is difficult. Those groups are damn picky who they let those dogs go to. Today we went to the doggie lake and tthey swam nonstop for three hours. After that we stopped for popsicles under a big shady tree. I think I wore their fuzzy asses out and they may skip their 9:00 wrestling match,I can hope:)
I applaud you Swampy, for doing your homework in researching, seeking advice and opinion re: various breeds and just plain 'thinking it through' before taking that huge step in adopting a family pet. If only more people did, but as we all know they just don't.
No doubt you'll find the perfect 'fit'- plenty of wonderful suggestions/advice here today. Happy choosing and best wishes for lots of happy and healthy years with Fido!
And one more thing. I am a stickler on what kind of food my babies eat. Holistic kibble only and real meat, grains and veggies. All human grade food only. If you find yourself bored just google "foods dogs die for" and you will find what crap is put in to any commerial dog food.
All dogs are good people and not all dogs are typical of their breed. Maybe the shelter will let you try them out, Connie? Spend some time with the dog, with the kids, and see who fits. Pick a few and visit and take them for walks before you decide. Pain in the butt, but, it's better than being stuck with an animal that doesn't suit your family. I can't wait to see what you get.
I've never had a dog I picked out, so this is exciting for me...lol. 13 years with a St. Bernard..do not do that. LMAO! I had a sheepdog that was awesome. He sure got dirty though.
Dalmations are insane..the most hyper dogs I've ever seen!
Swampy I didn't get a chance to read all the advice that has been given to you, but I do want to put my 2 cents in.... If you want a not too big dog get a Beagle but my HIGH recommendation is a Golden Retriever.... the kids will love it, the dog will love the kids and you will fall in love with the dog also even tho it isn't what you wanted in the first place... :)
Pat, my dogs don't have a clue. They think they are people. Who buys popcicles for dogs? LMFAO They are also known as late in life children.

Biz I wasn't refering to your comment. My comment was more a refernce to all the heat that Joe Biden and President Obama received from organizations like Peta because they wanted pure bred dogs.
I didn't see your comment until now.
Sorry for the misunderstanding
That dog is awful!! Not a kid friendly dog. He should be chasing escaped convicts and child molesters. he scares me! Dont ever get a dog like that.
DEVIL DOG! Thats right TVSnark!
She should go thru Scotty Rescue. Scotties are wonderful, obedient, small enough, smart, they talk, precious darlings, never bark, gentle as lambs, fun playmates. The only breed I will ever have from now on. We love madeleine and will stay with Scotties. You saw her swinging here in a pic. What dog wants to swing? She's the best!

I did not pay for any of my dogs that we have had in our lives. They were all rescues. Either from the pound or someone did not want them.
We had a black lab. She was a wonderful dog.
The only things that I hated was when she shedded in the summer and her enormous sized poops. I would be out in the yard gagging my ass off with the bucket and shovel.
She lost her mind (vet thought must have been neuro problem) when she was 8 yrs old. We had to put her down. I cried like a big baby for a long time after that.
I wanted to clarify. When she lost her mind, she was attacking our other dogs so badly that one had to have stitches.
She came to our house as a puppy and she knew these dogs from the beginning. They were family. So it was out of character for her.
We waited about 3 months before we made the decision.
Oh Heidi, how awful! I can't even begin to imagine how difficult that was- and in those circumstances. For many of us, pets are as much family members as anyone.. sometimes moreso. (matter of fact, I think more of my pets than some of my *human* family)
Anyway, I'm so sorry.
Watch the Dog Whisperer. You'll get tons of clues about having a dog.
The breed is less important than the DOG OWNER. WE have to be the ones who are accountable for our dog's behaviour and some basic rules make it better for everyone.
Your kids will love seeing how important they are in the family when they learn how to use calm-assertive behaviour to guide the dog.
10:36:00, I'm so sorry that pic scares you. It's just a crazy play moment caught, that's why it's so funny. They are sweet animals.
Everytime I see a Golden Retriever, I think of you Nadine. Awww RIP Cami.
The are wonderful.
You all have chimed in with wonderful thoughts and a whole lot to consider...I have had a retriever/lab mix and he was a great dog (he was dog napped) and have had miniture husky's and a german shepard as a child all great dogs the lab and gs are a little bit bigger then I want a house dog to be, in the end it will be the dog that chooses us since it will be a rescued dog...still so much to think about going to research some more on the beagle, shih-tzu and labapoo, boxer and spaniel.
OHHH I know about the Pits, when I was 12 we had Tippy a big ol lap dog spoiled as all get out with her sad puppy eyelash batting eyes, greatest dog ever, unfortunatly she got out of the yard and had gotten into some poison the sheep herders left for coyotes/wolves...a dreadful thing to see.
I totally agree a dogs demeanor is about the owner not about the breed.
Thank you all and when it happens I will be giving out cigars and photos.
Connie
I'll be looking foreward to posting the new addition. OMG! It's like I'm getting a dog! LMAO!
When choosing a dog it might also be a good idea to consider your areas climate. Some dogs are definately better suited for diferent areas, especially if the dog is an outside dog.
I like Boxers and Bulldogs they have great personalities, short hair, and their tails don't knock stuff over.
Another great dog is a Boston Terrier. Really funny dog. Looks kind of like a miniature Boxer and has a lot of energy.
There is also the French Bulldog. About the size of a Boston Terrier. Little less active though.
