60's Barbie fashions

There's the blue cord jumper, Snark! It's called "Date Night" and it goes for around $20 bucks on eBay. Mattel was so sexist then that the jumper came with a plastic tray and two coke glasses so Barbie could serve refreshments to Ken. All Barbies clothes had very cool names. I'm looking for "Registered Nurse" I had it as a child and it was awesome, it even had glasses so Barbie would look smart. I guess it came with a urine sample?? I don't remember that..lol. WTF is that thing? And "The Sheath", I have that one with the hat. I have the ballerina tutu with shoes and the striped sundress (with hat) and yep, I have "Solo In The Spotlight." I have this one really amazing one that's an orange plaid wool business woman's suit with a real mink collar and mink hat. Tiny little brief case..Barbie was evolving. Geez, they are little works of art and nothing like the Barbie clothes sold now.

my friend has a whole basement full of old Barbies and their clothes, from way back. Her mother in law collected them and now her dil sells them on ebay. She makes enough money to pay her son's college tuition.....THAT tells you something. If you are looking for something specific, let me know and I can direct can ask her!

I have Dawn, they were really cute and teeny tiny with well sculpted hands. Anyone remember Penny Bright?

Well crabbie, that IS appropriate. I'll bet their costume designer knows about Barbie.

Dawn Dolls! Yes. I had the whole "pageant" set.

purely random story... my favorite Barbie was one that wore makeup. I don't remember the clothes and this would have been late 70's early 80's. There was a little sponge thing that you ran over her eye when wet and it exposed the makeup. This set lived at grandmas and when I came to visit one day I found the spongie tool had been accidentally tossed. I was crushed. I know gram probably didn't even know what it was for and in retrospect, toilet paper probably would have worked just well to dampen the eye area.

i used to love barbie!! Even the ones from the 90's weren't that bad. When they started looking like hookers that's when I was like enough!

Barbie is tame compared to the Bratz dolls. THOSE are street walkers. Their activities are shopping and clubbing.

DD, If I wanted to send Lissa some stuff how would I address it?

On my 10th birthday, I begged for a Barbie, with a case, and with clothes, because my friend had one (she had the pony-tail Barbie with the swimsuit).

My mother, who worked at a shoe factory, gave in. I got the Barbie (with the bubble haircut, or whatever it was called), the authentic case, and one bought dress. Once my mother paid for all those, she said "no more".

She made my Barbie clothes after that. I remember a lovely green cloak with a stand-up collar (that my 4th grade teacher adored), and a white kootchie pre-disco dress with fringes. I truly cannot imagine my mother sitting at her sewing machine to make those tiny clothes, the itty-bitty stitches... but she did it, and after working 10 hours a day. I'd wake up in the morning, and there would be another outfit sitting on my beloved Barbie case.

Solo in the Spotlight...my absolute favorite. I used to save my babysitting money to by "real" Barbie clothes.
I allowed one of my younger sisters to play with my Barbies. She left them at a neighbors house about 38 years ago, and I have not let her forget it!
I think one of my favorites was the one with the "wig stand". Barbie came with 3 wigs, red, blonde, and brunette.

I've kept all my daughter's Barbies . She decided she wanted to learn to make clothes for them when she was around 11 so I got her a little sewing machine and off she went. I was impressed with a lot of the dresses she made. She loved the collector's editions that came out at holiday time. She must have close to 100 of them in beautiful dresses. I'm sure one day her little girl will fall in love with them.

I loved barbies growing up and still love them! My favorite was my Wonder Woman barbie. I also had Donnie and Marie, Sonny and Cher, Charlie's Angels and alot of regular barbies. Ahhhh...the memories.... :)

we have tons of this stuff too. All in separate baggies with the accessories too, all stored in a special trunk. We once saw Morgan Brittany on an infommercial and she had all her Barbie stuff stored like that, so we did it. Its a good idea. yes, they are all tiny works of art, made by tiny Chinese childrens hands many decades ago when nobody cared or even knew, children that would never even own a Barbie, or knew what it was. The clothes are real
treasures.

These comments were such a blast to read, I guess we all have Barbie memories. I have the make up Barbies and a Sleeping Beauty that works the same way. You run a wet cloth over her eyes to wake her up. And my most prized Barbie is the wig Barbie and I finally found all the wigs too. They were a bonus in the Solo Spotlight case I bought at an auction.

Pat, check your email.
I love old Barbie stuff now but I hated it as a child. I was such a tomboy and only wanted Star Wars toys.

Pat,
Wouldn't it be a hoot, if the Barbie box you bought with Solo in the Spotlight and the wig Barbie were from my sister's friend that absconded with them so, so many years ago!
