Apple pie and pie dishes

Someone asked on here what I was talking about when I said I collected old glass or stoneware pie plates, with flowers. Those are two I use a lot. They're deeper than regular pie pans and easier to clean. Pie doesn't stick to them. I use them for deep dish pizza too. I love the old Pyrex glass ones too, in colors like green and blue. You find them at sales sometimes. I could take some steel wool and scrub mine up better, it wouldn't hurt them any, but, I use them a lot. Shrugs.

Last night's pie was apple. It wasn't quite done here, this is where I took it out to put on a butter wash and some sugar, it makes the pie all sparkly. It was so good, I used Southern Rose apples. We're getting some good apples in now, but, it will be a month before the awesome fall apples come in. I could eat a truckload of them, but, only when they're real crisp. Southern Rose turned out to be a real good pie apple though. I'm so glad my oven is fixed, I was missing pie. I don't give a crap about cakes or donuts or any dessert really, except pie. And you just can't hardly buy good pie. I bought one good pie this year at the farmers market and I went back and looked for that lady who baked it and never did find her again. Good pie makers are hard to find.

That's a 50's table cloth, Nadine. You asked. That stuff is funky, tacky and colorful. Anyone on here actually used a pie bird? Remember those?

I LOVE the 50's table cloths! And that pie looks great.

I just had a small piece. Gooood. Now, I want another one. Why don't I just eat a big piece to begin with?

Ooh I think I've got one of those tablecloths. I wasn't sure what decade it was from but if it looks old and isn't expensive, I buy it.

Haha, I eat that way too Pat. I think it's because I can't tell how hungry I am till I finish a chunk.

Yup, got me a pie bird and I sometimes use it.

Don't scrub up those pans too good. They are well seasoned. That's why nothing sticks too them

Vintage is awesome! So is the pie! :)

OK, I have no clue what a pie bird is... should I?...

My pie bird is painted to look like blackbird with a yellow beak. It's about 3-4 inches long and hollow with a hole in the beak. You insert into the middle of the pie before going into the oven and as the filling starts bubbling the hole in the beak lets the steam out. Remember 4 and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie....?

Pat - You can post the photo from my blog. Thanks for looking it up!!!

I want to know how to make that delicious looking crust.

Thanks Naseem!

Bedbugs, flour (enough for two crusts),a stick of butter (or shortening) a pinch of salt and a dab of cold milk (or ice water).

It should feel like play dough.

Thanks! I'd never heard of a pie bird. I wonder if my Mom had one. Love the dishes, Pat. I don't know how many years ago I heard that vintage linens were going to be in great demand. Whoever told me or wherever I read it was right. The prices went sky high. That table cloth looks like one I remember growing up with. I can still see the dish towels, too!

Now, as far as the pie. OMG, it looks scrumptious. I'd put me a big scoop or two of vanilla ice cream on each piece and that pie just might be gone by the end of the night.

My Mom used to put cheese on her apple pie. I never tasted it. Anyone else ever hear of doing that--it was actually quite common (she told me). As for me I'll stick to ice cream.

I cheat every now and then and buy Mrs. Smith's frozen pies. They are pretty good. Of course, nothing beats home made if you know how to make it. Unfortunately, anything could beat mine!

Many years ago I made my husband's favorite from scratch...blueberry pie. I put it on the table to cool and a little while later our Irish Setter came walking out of the kitchen with a blue face! Was I ever mad! Wish I had a picture of him. We laughed many times over the years about it.

My Golden ate a whole 10" pecan pie once....he's a counter cruiser extrodinaire

escrowmama,

Too funny. Did he have to stay in the yard for a while? The BB pie didn't bother our setter's stomach a bit. He was a real garbage hound.

I can't begin to tell you the stunts that dog pulled.

DD, I'm going to try that out this weekend. If it looks half as good as yours, I'll send you a photo.

DD I love the pie plates, I have never seen any like those before. I do have a pie bird and he sits on the back of my stove and scolds me for not making enough pies. When I was a kid we always had pie because my dad was an Iowa farm kid and if you didn't have pie in the house at all times then your mom wasn't doing her job. My mom taught me how to make great pie crust, after that it is a no brainer. Our lab has never stolen a pie, but it is not for lack of trying.

Coyote-

We laughed our asses off too. It doesn't matter what he eats, his poops are always little in comparison to his size (90 lbs and not fat)and never has loose poop but he always barfs when he gets into the corncobs. His normal diet is holistic kibble (Wellness brand).

I have a pie bird. Its blue pottery. I have never used it!!! My beloved aunt gave it to me. I make really bad crust usually, so I leave the pie baking to Mrs. Smith!! Yours is beautiful. I love the dishes & the tablecloth. Its very antique.

Pat,
I love the vintage tablecolth and the dishes and I wish I had that pie too!

It took me years to figure out how to make a decent pie crust. I had just been playing with it too much and making it tough.

I'm so jealous of your pie dishes & that PIE!!!

Mrs. Smith makes a fairly decent frozen pie, but, nothing like home made.

Coyote, yup, cheddar cheese on apple pie. My mom still does it as do all of the women in her family. I guess I'm breaking the tradition because it looks gross to me.

I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I love pies. I think pumpkin is my favorite though. Pat, I'm driving over for dinner. What can I bring?

I want to live with you forever and eat pie! I can't cook, bake or boil water, but I can appreciate a good pie, and I can tell that is one fine apple pie.

My grandmother had a wonderful collection of pie birds; she was a domestic goddess. Unfortunately, a nasty relative snuck my darling grandmother into a home without permission and gave to charity what she didn't steal for herself.

I rescued my grandmother and she's back in her own home with all new possessions, and I'll snatch her niece bald if she ever dares put one foot in my presence, but Grandma's decided not to pursue getting anything back, so I'll never know exactly what's still (sorta) "in the family," except I know she has the wedding chest my grandfather made for my grandmother (and don't think it don't burn my fanny that Grandma won't let me do a durn thing about that!). If the niece's got those pie birds, I hope they bite her in the ass.

Yes, I agree with other comments...your pie looks great. I've just created a page called A Pie Bird Is An Unusual Gift and Collector's Item. The pie birds just flocked to it. But if you look be forewarned, you may want to start collecting them because they are gorgeous!
