The death of a garden

It's raining today, the power keeps going out. I spent most of the day taking mom to the store. Well, waiting in the car for her to come out of the store. It wasn't unpleasant, I read half a novel and it was a Japanese translated thick thing..so you know it took awhile. The look of the garden could be depressing, if you let it be, but, it's not really dead because there will be another one next year, so I think of it as preparing for it's Winter sleep. It's almost like Fall today and I like the sounds in the garden. The dried corn stalks are making a clicking sound in the slight wind. Click, click, like it's talking. Soon the leaves will come down and join the corn in a chat making that scritching sound on the sidewalks. I love that sound. I'll use some for decorating and leave most of it. I think it will help with the weeds that come up in the Spring. It will make digging easier.

The Pumpkins are turning into real pumpkins, still a creamy yellow, but, the size of bowling balls. Like Mags, I thought I had one plant that had only male flowers, but, today I saw a marble sized Pumpkin on the very end vine. They grow really fast, so I'm sure it will make a good one by Halloween. I have some work to do, cleaning the garden up and getting it ready for next year and I still have a lot of root vegetables to harvest. The Tomatos are really kicking butt now, tons of them. That area looks like a mess, but, I'll leave it until frost. Hated August is nearly over and it will be time to replace my Rocky Horror wall paper with a Fall photo. My traditions may be a little strange, but, I like them. I just found all the carving kits I bought on sale last year after Halloween. Lissa is old enough this year to carve her own pumpkin. I'm excited about that. She's always helped, but, now I think I can trust her with a little tool.

This year we will have the real decorations of Halloween. Last year I couldn't bring myself to put them up and for the first time all I had out was cutesy stuff. This year I'm going back to normal, spooky and horrible. Not a big display though, because we don't get that many kids here. It used to be huge and took me a month to set it up. And I did store windows too, but, not anymore. It will mostly be for me and Lissa and she can help. She can put out all the creepy stuff she picked out last year, and I bought for her, but, couldn't use. And this year I have a place to make the circle and fire for Samhain..living in an apartment sucked for Samhain. You really have to be outdoors to do it right. It's an important holiday and I'm looking foreward to it.

I just notices two days ago that the yellow cucumber plant is done, but the cukes are still growing. The regular cuke plant is about done too, but this year it only gave three cucumbers, I didn't see anymore flowers....the ball zuchini is still blooming...Oh and there's a volunteer sunflower and a volunteer corn growing! We think Mr. Cheeks the chipmunk had something to do with it, we put seeds and peanuts for him out there to eat.

Ericka, the raccoon brings her toddler up to eat too. They have their own catfood. Ringer, the baby is so cute!!! But he gets so scared of people, he dashes underneath the deck until the strangers are gone.

I think of fall like the party being over. You spend a lot of time getting ready for it, it is really fun and hectic while it is happening, and the next day you cleanup and think about the fun you had and what you want to do next. I enjoy the down time too.

Samhain is Pagan New Years Eve and saying goodbye to Summer, harvest celebrating. Many traditional rituals are involved. Most importantly it is Feast Of The Dead. A night when you open your circle to any and all spirits and prepare them food. You must welcome them all.

I'm so excited for fall. It is far and away my favorite time of the year. I love the crispness in the air. It makes me feel more alive somehow.

Fall is awesome. Pat I never knew anything about Samhain, which is weird sine I have several Pagan friends. Thanks for the info it sounds very interesting, I am going to do some research on it tonight. The end of summer always makes me a bit sad even though I love Fall.

Nissa, it's a holiday that's important to me. Communicating with the spirit world, and it's a time to let go of things and bring in more positive energy. I'll post more on it as it gets closer. There are things about Samhain that anyone can use, no matter what religion you are. I think it's just peaceful and helpful to my head.

Please, Pat, do post more! It does sound interesting. We all need to let go of certain feelings and issues that hold us back from enjoying a better life. Maybe this ritual could help some of us.

So, interesting, Pat. I googled it some after reading your post, but I really want to hear about how you celebrate it, and how we can all apply it. Can't wait to read more.

My flowers never did any good this summer. They are usually spilling over the containers & my garden is exploding with color. We had an issue with the water softener that we were not aware of. We got a new one last fall, it had been hooked up to ALL outlets. Which meant, that the outside hose was soft water too! Thats what slowly killed my flowers & made everything yellow all summer and killed the vegetables. We had lots of rain too, so that may have helped them some. We figured out the problem about 3 weeks ago, It was just too late. Thank god I didnt spend very much on my flowers this summer. NEVER use soft water on plants & flowers. I did , by a plumbing mistake. Learn from my mistake! It sucks.

I hate the Fall and the winter even more. Everything dies in the fall. I lost my father and my son in the Fall. I would like to close my eyes and sleep right through it. It's a SAD (seasonal affective disorder) time of year for me and plain sad also.
