The Girl Of The Sea Of Cortez

I found this book in a box that came into the shop and of course, no one wanted it. I took it home and devoured it in one day. It's a book that should be savored, but, I was greedy. I looked for a picture of it and found one on an antique site. I really didn't know Peter Benchley wrote beautiful things, I thought he just wrote Jaws and other..Jaw like things. Not that I didn't love Jaws, but, this is just extraordinarily beautiful stuff. And so I've been dreaming constantly of the sea. And in my dreams I am always under water, like some kind of fish, but, I must be a predator because in my dreams I have no fear.

I have always been fond of the Hammerheads, I saw some once and they didn't look fearsome, they looked...efficient and happy. Being out in the Ocean alone, those are some of my fondest memories. And it's no wonder I dream of the girl from the Sea Of Cortez, her family tried to ruin her paradise and kill everything good in it. Today is old lady check day, need I say more?

I am not laughing. I've put it off until this afternoon, but, there is no avoiding it anymore. It's going to have to be a short afternoon because I'm not feeling the greatest. I think I caught whatever my DIL had and it's not morning sickness. You'd think maybe she could come over and run the old ladies around, since I kept Lis from Friday until Sunday when she was sick, but, that's not how it works around here. I guess I wouldn't want to have to say "thank you" to her anyway. Okay, now I'm laughing a little.

Spell check thinks I should spell Cortez as Cortex or Kotex. That's amusing. I need a big giant Kotex for my whole world today.

Oh no! Old lady check day is bad enough when you're feeling good. Sending positive thoughts your way...hoping they make it easy on you today.

hahaha...I always call any "pad" a Kotex. My kids cringe at that. It just shows I am old. They are like "Kotex?!! Kotex?!!!" I guess I'm at least as smart as Spellcheck.

I must go find that book and give it a gander. I never knew any of his works beyond, Jaws, either.

I hope you feel better and the old gals cut you some slack.

Nina, I thougt of you as I was reading it. Would you like me to send it to you? I have one I have to mail to Noelle, so I have to wrap and go to the post office anyhow.

Question- had you heard about the earthquake in California when you posted this? The epicenter was in the Sea of Cortez.

Majestic animals. I'd rather see that picture above me than Humboldt squid anywhere near me.

My old Gunny used to say that the most dangerous creature in the ocean is a US Marine. Maybe in WW2, but now-a-days you gotta check with a lawyer and get permission from civil authority before you take a bite.

If you have time to watch, it is shark week on the discovery channel :)

Dishy, I read that book when I was a teenager, back in the mid-70s. It is still one of my all time favourites, and I revisit it every few years. I have always had a deep love of the ocean, even though I've only ever taken one trip to the coast (to Maine one weekend with my aunt and uncle when I was ten years old). I dream of water and whales all the time, also aquariums full of fish, for some reason.

There was an other book that I read around the same time as Cortez, which is similar to Benchley's book. For the life of me, I cannot remember the title, and it's stored away in a box in the back of my cupboard. But these two books fostered my fascination with the sea. It's surprising that Benchley was capable of such beauty, isn't it? I've read both Jaws and The Deep, and it seems like Cortez was almost a fluke.

The most beautiful animals in the world are mantas and whales, don't you think? They're so graceful and mysterious. Don't you wish you could ride on the back of a manta? Sigh... :)

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!
