Three winners

Lissa didn't show up last night and I rented movies. I found out today she went to her Aunt Robin's to stay with her cousins and I know that's a good place for her to spend time. I just wish her mom would call me when she goes somewhere else so I could make plans for a Saturday night once in awhile. But, it turned out okay because I rented big people movies.

I didn't rent The Haunting In Connecticut when it came out because I've read all that I can on the true story and there's a real good version on You Tube called "A Haunting..The Haunting In Connecticut" which I liked. If you ever have time and like ghost stories look it up. "A Haunting" is a series of ghost stories and it's well done. It has a religious slant I could live without, but, good scares. Anyway, the movie had that ridiculous poster of a boy spewing ectoplasm and I thought it was corny and hoaky. But, last night I was bored so I got it. It turned out there was a good reason for the ectoplasm, it's historical, as we all know, right? In the old days it was real popular with fake mediums. Anyway, it was a good ghost story movie and I liked it. It had some nice scares in it. It got silly in the end, as they all do, because in the movies they always have to solve mysteries. In real life, ghost stories are mostly never solved, but, I guess that truth doesn't work so well in the films. I think it would actually, but, that's just my opinion. So, my point is, if you like ghost stories, this is a pretty good one. In general, I liked the way it was done.

The next movie was The Cake Eaters and starred Kristen Stewart before she became a vampire's lover girl and it was good enough that I didn't turn it off in boredom. She plays a crippled girl who wants to lose her cherry before she dies and it revolves around the people in her life and their mixed up relationships. Bruce Dern is in it. Mary Stewart Masterson directed it and I guess it would be called a chick flick. It was a good time waster and not brain dead.

The last one was called The Garden Party and I'd never heard of it, I don't know if it's old or not. It was my kind of movie though. A bunch of interesting kids who are trying to make it on their own amidst the dope dealers, perverts and vipers of Los Angeles. It had some interesting music and one old song, Garden Party, which I never realized had such a nice bass line and I ended up getting out the guitar and playing it later. Anyway, it was a good movie, if you ask me. I usually like little odd independent films way better than blockbusters and stories about people way more that special effects. So, if you're like me, you'd like this one.

I think I'm going to order The Haunting from on demand sometime this week. I'm not a big horror film fan but I like the based on true stories film.

The last film I saw was in Hindi. Have you ever seen any Bollywood films? Slumdog Millionare doesn't count!

I saw The Hangover yesterday. It was full of belly laughs if you can overlook its R rating---glad to have gone alone because I haven't laughed so hard in ages!

Naseem, I haven't seen a lot of Bollywood, but, there was one on your site I'm looking for. It sounded good. And there was one I picked up last week, it was excellent and I'm stumped for the name right now, but, when I think of it, I'll post it. It had subtitles.

I saw The Hangover, an illegal version on Justin TV, it WAS funny.

We rented and taped Haunting in CT (still on dvr). I liked the original. It showed on Discovery or A@E.
But this one was good. The eyeball thing in the beginning. OMG! LOL

I have Coraline sitting here to watch. The girls loved it so i guess I will too.
I also recently bought Grey Gardens. The remake of the 1970s documentary. I like the original but the remake fills in alot of the gaps in the history of the family.
Hubby and youngest watched Push with Dakota Fanning. Hubby loved it. I have to still watch it before I take it back to the RedBox.

We are a big movie family. Our oldest drives the ship (picks the movies) and so far, she has picked well.
If it was not for her, I would have never seen Persepolis, Little Miss Sunshine, Notorious Bettie Page, and many others.
I am a huge turn of the century nut. Love me some Masterpiece Theatre, Jane Austen, and Colin Firth in anything old.

I love Bettie Page, but, that movie was boring. It made me mad.

I have to see Coraline with Lis.

I love Masterpiece Theatre too.

OMG, Grey Gardens, I want to see the whole documentary sooooooo bad. All I've seen are the clips on You Tube. I love them.

I watched Grey Gardens about a month ago. Absolutely mesmerizing.
I recommend "Man From Earth." Different in every way.

If you like animation, you have to watch The Triplets of Belleville. I like bizarre movies, and this one is very much so.

If you don't mind reading subtitles, I recommend "Y tu mama tambien" (about two kids who go on a road trip), "The motorcycle diaries" (about a young Che Guevara), "The Crime of Padre Amaro" (about a young priest who falls for a young woman), "Amores Perros" (these four films with Gael Garcia Bernal...I like him a lot), "Maria full of grace" (about a young colombian girl who agrees to be a mule), "Sex and Lucia" (about a woman who is grieving the 'end' of a relationship), "Talk to her" (about a matadora -female bullfighter- who is struck by a bull and ends up in a coma), "All about my mother" is another good one... And a favorite of mine, by Ecuadorian film director Sebastian Cordero, "Cronicas" (about an american journalist who is trying to find a serial rapist/killer).

If you haven't seen any of these, I highly recommend. Spanish movies tend to be a little on the bizarre side, I like them a lot.

I also watched Kristen Stewart this weekend. On Lifetime. She was in a movie called "Speak" about a young girl that was date raped. She just always acts the same to me. Somber, depressed, unhappy, like she hates being there, wherever she is! I dunno. It was ok, I think she's got one mood "depressed" and so far it's been working for her. Never seen her smile. I dont like her much. She needs to get over herself.
