The town square

This is the thriving metropolis where I live. I told you it was quaint. And pretty. I think people are starting to finally realize the old buildings have charm and they've stopped trying to modernize them by slapping aluminum all over the fronts. They're kind of painted lady style now. The town square is just that, four blocks forming a square of businesses and in the center is the court house, which is an attractive old brick building with a clock tower. That's where the Sheriff's office is too. You can buy live bait from a machine after hours. Handy. Small town Iowa, they all look pretty much the same. Not exactly Rodeo Drive, is it? We do have a McDonalds though. It's out at the edge of town, on the loop. Scoop the loop? Ring a bell to any small town people?

in clinton, which is on the mississippi, they have the dike and big thing for kids to do was cruise the dike!

Ahh. Well here we scooped the loop..over and over all night. That was about all there was to do.

all there was in clinton was to cruise the dike....i think that's all there is STILL to do there....

and yep....ride it over and over...and actually it did form a rather oblong loop....

so in clinton---scooping the dike loop!

When I was a teen, draggin' main and everything else we did at night was called "shooting nines." I have no idea why. Now, it seems a little weird, but I'm using it in a book anyway LOL

I love small towns like this. The buildings are a treasure. We have many in this neck of the woods also.

Pat, is your office in one of these buildings? I hope it's not in the gun building LOL

I see nothing like this near me! I live in Miami....which is not as exciting as many make it out to be.

I love small towns, and I also love traveling through the old colonial stretches in New England.

There is a lot more "soul" in these old charming buildings.

Haa, that's funny. I remember when we finally got our "McDonalds Express", whatever the hell that is. They shared space with the roller rink...LOL I also remember when we got our first street light. Fancy stuff there now.

i love it! I live in the burbs of Baltimore.Recently we went to the East Coast Sturgis motorcycle rally in Western Maryland and I really loved the small town feel. 30 minute drive to the Walmart!

sorta makes me want to go uptown to the drugstore & order a cherry phosphate! If I could do that. Those were the good ol' days people. Sloping wood floors, all unlevel, penny candy, the same buckets & brooms in the store for sale for how many years? And nobody cared. Kids could go uptown w/o a worry for the parents, be gone all day playing ball, playing army & eating candy & drinking pop, getting dirty and finally going home just as it got dark. Tired & dirty after a hard day of playing with all the kids. Yep...fun! True clean fun w/o a worry.

It looks very similar to a lot of our little towns here in New England. Very cute. I've never seen a storefront with, "GUNS" on it though. LOL. Guess that's what makes it, "GUNTOWN"

LOL! Guntown is the decrepit side of town. The old side. That's the real name of my neighborhood.

Nice old photos of the buildings in your town Pat - thanks for sharing. I would love to have someone as cool as you read my cards...people in NYC are so jaded

I'd take your pretty, quiet small town over suckass L.A. (and ridiculously ostentatious - and overrun with Middle Easterners - Rodeo Drive) any day! I live under the papparazzi helicopter flight plan. Crash and burn, you motherfuckers!
