Yard sale treasures

Sorry for that blurry pic, but, that little toy thing was so small I couldn't get a good picture. It's plastic and if it had been porcelain I never would have looked at it. But, I love old plastic and it's so cute. About an inch tall, the little boy is dressed like George Washington and the girl wears a polka dot 1950's dress. They both wear Lil' Abner boots and have a faded green umbrella. WTF? It cracks me up to puzzle that all out. It was a nickle and it's one of those odd things that will sit in my china hutch forever.

This yard sale was a bonanza and I got a car load of stuff. Mom said she didn't want to go, it was too hot, so I had a good time. I also got two cute hoodie jackets for Lis and a really cute new pink rain coat for her, some other kids clothes like new and a really pretty full size comforter in beige with tiny flowers on it. A soft blue vase that goes with my old pottery and it has wrapped wicker handles. An old iron scrolly plant holder and a three basket wire hangy thing for fruit. Umm..two movies, Shrek (which Lissa had but broke) and Gigli, with J-Lo And Ben Affleck, which was listed online as the worst movie ever made, so I have to see it. Some little decorative frames with rhinestones. Some towels, old ones, gawd, I hate the new towels they make now. Beige curtains that made great liners for my curtains in here that are too flimsy. Two purses for Lis, one is denim Tinkerbell, never used. Oh, and I got a cute little portable sewing machine, never used, still in the box, and best of all I got three jewelry boxes to replace that one of Lissa's that I accidentally broke. I didn't even know she liked that old box and she cried and cried and said I was mean. I found two cute ones and one old one that plays music and has a butterfly that spins around. She can keep the ballerina from the old one in it and switch them out. That was a good sale and all that stuff cost me $11.00. I'm going back today, because they're supposed to put out more stuff. Yay! Yard sales!

Pat, do you have macros on your camera? it's normally a button/icon with a little flower. If you select that before you take a pic like that up close, it should come out less blurry.

P.S. ..had to finish reading... wow, good job on the acquisitions! lol. I'm just starting to get into yard sales, I never liked how much time it takes to pick thru peoples stuff to find a good deal hear and there... but we've been going the last couple weekends and we've found some great stuff. Definitely can't beat the prices!

I loves me some yardsale-ing, but I can never seem to get up early enough. Pat, what time do you usually head out?

Biz, yard sale junkies like me have a system. You quickly scan the tables and in a nano second you register the things that catch you and go and grab those. You can reject them later if they turn out to be chipped or bad. But, you grab them. Then you make a pile by the cash box, smiling and saying you have to keep looking. When they see you're a serious shopper they help you by guarding your pile. Always works. That leaves you free to browse the piles and boxes knowing you have what you want and no one can get it away from you. Unscrupulous swoopers are frowned on. So are early birds, people hate early birds. Oh, and it's okay to bargain on big items, but, never on little ones, that's considered rude and cheap. And always comlpiment the sale person, everyone likes to know their hard work is appreciated. Even if you find nothing, always say, thanks for letting me look. Oh, there's lots more, but, you'll learn. It's an art.

I don't head out early unless there's something big advertised that I really need. I figure if I'm meant to have it, it will be there.

I'll bet there are other yard sale savy people on here who can add to my list and tell you exactly how to give a good yard sale too. That's a lot of work and there's some do's and don't that can make it really proffitable.

my girls went to a yard sale today. they got a clock with little dice around it for the numbers since my MIL is a poker freak, a sign for me that says"My house was clean yesterday, sorry you missed it" that cracked me up. also a set of owl salt and pepper shakers from Arkansol. Owls remind my 8 year old of her great granny that died New Years Day a few years ago so she is obsessed with anything owl. She was heartbroken when her Granny died. She was more like a grandmother than great grandmother because she had her kids young, my husbands mom had him young, we had her young. She has a plastic owl figurine that's hollow inside that was her Granny's . It still smells like Granny's house. Hayley sniffs it every now and then. She still cries for Granny sometimes.

My mom took me to yard sales and rummage sales from a very early age.
You can drive up to a yard sale and tell if it is worth your time to get out or not.
You have to get up early..EARLY. You want to hit the sales early for the good stuff OR near closing to get stuff for next to nothing. My friend and I go on almost every Saturday.
I am a die hard yard sale junkie! ROFL

Make sure you have singles and change. Makes it easier to haggle. If you haggle and have a $20..they might not do it.
Or if you say..I only have $3..they might give it to you for that price.

Yard sales, consignment shops, thrift stores- love them all! I have found some really awesome things. That little figurine looks like something I would have definately bought.

Heidi, that's excellent sale advice. Thanks.

Naseem, your neighbor is nuts and her yard sale violated the yard sale rules of etiquite. You don't price things that high at yard sales, it's crazy. You consign those items at antique stores. Stupid yard sale junk priced as high as new retail makes people angry.

Valle, aww, that's such a nice reminder of your gram. I'm glad your daughter got it.
