Anyone else watch this? I just started watching it a few days ago and I'm into the third season now. It's on Hulu. 18 year old George was hit by flying space debris, a toilet seat to be exact, not a dignified way to go, but, she finds herself randomly recruited to become a reaper. She harvests souls. She is not death, she just helps people who's number has come up to part their body from their soul. It's not her dream job and it pays nothing, so she has to join the work force in an office and pretend she's human. George finds out she's not any more popular in death than she was in life, but, she gains insight with every episode. Her family has to deal with her death and their own....fucked up-ness. Her young sister, Reggie is one of the most interesting characters. Dead Like Me has a strong supporting cast and good writers, it's sometimes humorous and sometimes curious, but, always entertaining to me. It makes no religious claims either. The god subject comes up, as it pertains to what a character might believe in, but, it's not a base for the story. There is no god or devil to contend with..only death, and it's workers. I think every one in the world is curious about what happens when you die and I find this twist really nice. I wish I knew it was true.

I found an old book in a library years ago, written by a guy from the old west around the early 1800's. It was a story about his near death experience. As a young man, he hooked up with a band of outlaws that robbed trains, stagecoaches and banks and weren't too squeamish about killing people who got in their way. Anyway, this one town they rode into was raging with the plague, and all of them caught it. He was the only survivor. He described his descent into hell. When he came through the illness, he did a complete 180. Instead of being an outlaw, he became a town sheriff to fight against the kind of people he was once a part of.
From there, I was hooked on books about people who had experienced near death situations. A couple of the books written by doctors after their retirement (so they wouldn't be laughed out of the profession), about experiences their patients had related to them after they had either come close to dying or had been resusitated.
I believe our spirit goes somewhere else after it leaves the body. I saw a spirit that had just left a body when I was about 6 or 7.
It would take a few hours for me to explain why, but to make a long story short, I believe in heaven and hell.
I watched like 3 seasons of this for free on netflix last year.. it was really good!! I've have to start catching up on the last few seasons of it again. :)
I watched in the past and then got into a rut watching something else. Thanks for reminding me about this show. It is truly something different. I liked that Mandy Patinkin was in it, "Criminal Minds" has not been the same since he left.
Ellen Muth, who plays 'George' is an awesome actress.
I watched it when it first came on - I was addicted. I hated when they ended it - it was a very unique show. All the characters are so interesting, each dealing with life and death and afterlife in their own ways. I'll have to watch it again on Hulu.
Love this show.
been watching this for ages. Like all good tv though they cancel it so I think they only made up to series 3 or 4. I love the liberal use of bad language & the mundane of death. I have it downloaded to my laptop so when I travel overseas I have something good to watch.
I have these on Que on Hulu. Need to find some time. Haven't seen an episode yet. Looked interesting.
There are many mysteries and our universe is filled with more unknowns than knowns. But the one thing I have no doubt about is that our spirit/soul/life-force continues on after the brain and heart ceases to be functional.
I always loved this show !I used to watch it with my son . I thought that the mother was a mean nasty bitch and I hoped that they would kill her off . But no such luck !
It's going to suck if you have to work you're whole life and then have to get a job after you die too.
I watched a couple seasons of this but my absolute favorite was Six Feet Under.
Wait, 3 seasons? I thought there were only 2? I loved this show! It was truly awesome and comforting in a way. There is a movie also when you are done watching.
It ties up SOME of the storylines, emphasis on the word some. Unfortunately there is a new guy in Rube's place and a new Daisy. But still worth a watch.
I LOVE this show. I too discovered it after it was already off the air. After that, I had TIVO record every one that came on. Great show...too bad it's not on anymore!
I've been watching this in reruns and like it.
For some reason I like Mandy Pantakin . . . even though my sister loves him and I usually hate what she loves.
Cynthia Stevenson and George's mom is good too. I do enjoy this show. Oh, and a little Jasmine Guy . . . as a cop.
It sounds interesting. I'll add it to my list of things to do when I have free time...never.. lol.
Kind of reminds me of Pushing Daisies, my hubs and I loved that show, so sad to see it get cancelled!
Yeah, we watched it when it was on HBO or Showtime..cannot remember which. The movie that they made for it is not good. Our family watched it every week.
I have a true story for you pertaining to this. It is MY own celebrity sighting.
My hubby was not feeling well at work one day so they told him to go downstairs to the ER to get checked out. They put him in observation because they thought it might be his heart (come to find out later on it was bad acid reflux).
So I am sitting with him and we are chatting. They bring in someone and put them in the bed next to him. Curtain is separating so we cannot see each other. Then we hear her voice as she is talking to the nurse. Hubs and I look at each other. WE KNOW THAT VOICE!
She gets out of the bed to go to the bathroom, which is right near hubs bed. We get a peek at her. WE KNOW WHO IT IS. He whispers to me, "That is the girl from Dead like me." *the lead actress who plays George*
Now the show had been off the air for some time and it was not in syndication yet. Our family watched it every week when it was on..we knew it was her.
So I leave the room and get on the phone and call my oldest to ask her to look up George`s real name. Ellen Muth. So as I walk back to the room hubs and her are in..I look at the board in the ER. What do I see on the board??
Muth.
I call my daughter back and she is freaking out. She was wishing she was there. A woman that works at the hospital (that I know) overhears me. She drags my ass back in the room and we say hello to her. She was a nice woman but looked very sick. We left her alone after that. She pulled the curtain for a time and hubs and her were chit chatting.
From what we could hear from the Dr saying to her and from HOW she looked, she was dealing with an eating disorder. She was painfully thin. Her family was local.
But from seeing the movie that was made a couple years after, she had gained the weight back.
The friend from the hospital..I wanted to kill her. She was going to go grab her cellphone so she could take a picture of her. I told her NO. Leave that girl alone!
She did..Thank goodness.
So that is my celebrity story.
I have another one about meeting Tristan Rogers from General Hospital from the 1980s..but that is for another time.
Muth's voice is very recognizable. she's a talented actress, I'm glad you made your friend leave her alone.
It figures this show ended. The networks have to have room for more rock of love bus whores and Kardashiwhores.
Never missed an episode and that's hard for me; I can't remember things like -- what day, what time, what channel -- and have no patience to set things up to record -- so you know I have to love something to hunt it down!
I watched that show faithfully when it was on showtime and I loved it! I found it to be so interesting and different and the way some of the people died was so weird and unusual I was hooked. Definitely one of the better shows that was on cable.
Someone mentioned it sounded like Pushing Daisies...I believe they were created by the same person and if there had been a third season than George would have met the main character from Pushing Daisies. I read that somewhere.
Megan
One of my favorites! Whenever I tell anyone about this show, I just get the "huh?" look. It's a shame there's only a few seasons, and the subsequent movie was a let down.
Total Dead Like Me fan. Wish there was lots more...
