I've admitted I'm a Jello freak. Not only is it just plain good, but, it's the most beautiful thing! I love looking at it. We always have it on hand, it's one of those things that's fun and tasty. And kind of a no brainer. I don't use recipes much, so I had to look this one up so I could put it on here. The strawberry/pretzel dessert is an old fashioned staple in Iowa kitchens. The salty pretzels combined with the sweetness of the rest of it perks me right up. It's one of my favs.
STRAWBERRY JELLO PRETZEL SALAD
8 oz. bag pretzels
8 oz. bag pretzels
1/2 stick butter
8 oz. cream cheese
1 c. sugar
12 oz. frozen strawberries
1 lg. box strawberry Jello
Crush pretzels with rolling pin and place in a 9"x13" cake pan. Melt butter and pour over pretzels. Bake for 10 minutes at 325 degrees. Beat cream cheese and sugar. Spread on top of pretzels. Mix Jello according to package directions. Pour over cream cheese mixture and refrigerate until it begins to set. Add frozen, cut up strawberries to Jello. Let set for one hour. Cut and serve. Serves 12.

That's what THEY say, basically that's how I make it too, but, I mix the Jello with boiling water and then toss in a small box of frozen berries. You don't have to wait long to pour it on top. I could eat Jello everyday and I know I've forgotten a lot of Jello recipes. I particularly love the citrus ones and the salad type gelatins. And the whipped ones..and..lol..I'm hungry for it now. I thought maybe everyone might enjoy sharing your family's favorite Jello desserts and salads. How about it, got a good one?

never made it, but it just looks FASCINATING!
i am a co-mod of a vintage recipes community on LJ and the other co-mod loves all the gelatin recipes from the 50s when like EVERYTHING was encased in jello!
Oh, Tia thank you! I almost posted that gorgeous pic, I found it in images, but, there was no recipe. I'm definitly doing that one.
Canned milk..ahhh that's where the dreamy colors come from. Cool. Some things are so simple, huu?
I like baking a white cake and then poking holes in it and pouring the jello, without adding the cold water, over it and then putting cool whip on top of it. It's oh so yummy.
Theresa, OMG me too. The best cake in the world involves a yellow cake, holes poked for Jello, crushed pineapple and cool whip layers. I don't make it often or I'd overdose on it.
Here is one we love:

Great post!
Can't get that link to come up, Brig. What is it?
See if this works Pats:
Strawberry Bavarian Cream
Ohhhh, that's lovely and it has a variation with pineapple. Thank you. Tryin' that for sure.
Not big Jello fans in my house, we liked pudding more. I always liked the strawberry/ pretzel, tho. My little local grocery store makes it in their deli - so when I want it all I need to do is jump in the car. Your post inspired me to check my cookbooks. I have a JELLO cookbook, has all the recipes you're dreaming about. It came in a group of company books, Jello, Campbells, Hershey & Philly Cream Cheese. If you want a recipe, just ask, it's probably in that book. Or you can have the book, if you want it.
I wish I could buy a mold around here. I'll have to start watching yard sales.
Awww, you're sweet CJ. But, I was hoping this post would jog my memory of things I've had at pot lucks and picnics. My family never made anything like this. I make it now for me and Lis though. I'll bet I try everything that's posted here.
Here's a list of some of the recipes. (gotta do this before my vegan kid gets here. she freaked years ago when she found out what gelatine was made from)
Golden salad - crushed pineapple, shredded carrots, pecans
Ginger Pineapple mold- pineapple & ginger ale
Creamy Peach Salad mold - peaches & cool whip
Vegetable Yogurt Salad - yogurt, carrots, green pepper
Gelatin Heavenly Hash -cool whip, pineapple, mandarin orange, marshmallows, nuts
Peachy Orange Ring - peaches, ginger ale, celery, pecans
Under the Sea Salad - pears, cream cheese
There's lots more, didn't even start on the dessert ones. If you want any of these, I'll email em.

Here is a fave for my family. We call in "Pink Stuff"...lol
Whip cream
Strawberry jello

We make the "green stuff" here pistachio jello pudding, 2 containers of cool whip,16 oz crushed pineapple (with juice), nuts and like a whole bag of mini marshmallos...at least i never screw up this part of holiday dinners !!!!
snowbunnie
Black Cherry Jello, and substitute at least half the water with rum. Add fruit if you want (or not), chill and serve. In 30 minutes, your guests will be either hysterically funny or dead asleep. At this point, charades is the best.
That stuff will knock you out, truly.
My first cookbook of my own was "The New Joys of Jello". I probably got it free back in the 60's by mailing in boxes of Jello. I still have the cookbook - it's full of pictures of women in 60's style cocktail dresses coming to the door of a dinner party carrying a Jello mold. I love that cookbook. My favorite recipe was Strawberries Romanoff - I think it had strawberry Jello, strawberries and either sour cream or whipped cream. I'll have to dig it out. I remember that I tried every recipe in that book - my family was so sick of Jello by the time I finished. I thought I was quite sophisticated.
I wish I had a killer recipe, but I don't. I like to eat jello too, jiggly or straight out of the box. Yum.
Those pinwheels are really cute. I'm making those this weekend.
Chrissy, that cookbook sounds like a riot. Yep, I always dress up in style and answer the door with my Jello mold. LMAO!
my aunt made this one year.
orange creamsicle cake http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,166,157180-252200,00.html

Its good but its very sweet.
Two more, one is jello and one uses jello pudding. Both good.
Chiffon Marble
Cherry Fluff
Awesome.
that jello cake with the cool whip icing is my kid's favorite. they ask for it for their birthday cake. add vanilla pudding and some dream whip to the cool whip, its amazing.
Lime Pineapple Salad Mold.
1 can crushed pineapple, drained
1 small pkg cream cheese
1/2 cup dream whip
1 pkg lime jello
1/2 cup mayonaise
4 maraschino cherries quartered.
Add enough water to the pineapple juice to make 2 cups. Bring to a boil and add lime jello powder. Dissolve, cool and allow it to begin to set. Whip together cream cheese and mayo then fold in dream whip. Blend into lime jello mixture after it has begun to set. Pour into mold. Serve on a bed of lettuce.
That's my dear mom's-in-law recipe complete with bed of lettuce presentation. I didn't add the cherries usually. I loved this and would eat it as dessert as opposed to a side dish with dinner.
I have a family dessert I make but have no recipe. It's a layered pie with cream cheese + whipped cream layers alternating with raspberry jello + raspberries in a graham cracker crumb crust. Mom called it Raspberry Ribbon pie. It's heaven.
