Best thing my son ever did for me

It's been years and years now, but, it was still after most people had computers and my son walked in my house one day and he had this old dinosaur computer (I didn't even know it was a dinosaur then) he was packing in. And he said "I got a new computer and.." And I finished his sentence saying, yeah, and you want me to store some more junk for you, like I don't have a basement full of your crap now. And he laughed and said, no, this is for you. As he set it up in my dining room, I protested. I don't know how to use that thing, I don't even know how to turn it on and why the fuck do I want that thing anyway?? He finished setting it up, plugged it in and said "Shut up, Mom, you.....will....love...this." And he left, grinning that shit eating grin he flashed when he thought he knew it all. I shook my head and watched him pull out of the driveway and thought, smart ass fucker.
*
I ignored it for a week. Curiosity got the better of me and I called Noelle up and asked, how do you work this fucking thing? She told me how to turn it on. So I did. Big deal, a bunch of files and shit. WTF is this shit? Wait, what's this thing that says paint? Ohhh, that's sort of cool, I guess. Silly though, what a silly toy. I was telling my other friend, Deb and she said, go ahead and use my password and get on the net. That was back when everyone only had dial up and you had a password to get on. I figured I'd try it once, I'll try about anything once. That's how I ended up jumping out of a plane.
*
I remember really clearly the first thing I typed in..ghosts, real ghosts. LMAO, I was so lame. But, omg, I sat up all night long. I found people like me! Holy moley. I was hooked. I called up and got my own dial up. I found out what hotmail was and I found this crazy chat room you had to pick around in to find friends because it was full of horny losers. Imagine, me, talking on a computer to some one in Australia or Sweden or Italy or Sri Lanka! I had cyber love affairs and girl friends and ghost hunting buddies and I fought people in chat rooms learning to type "Fuck you nutless wonder!", quick as a bunny breeds. Eventually I grew beyond that crazy first computer mentality.
*
I found art programs and photo shopping, I made websites, learned things like HTML, and I went way past what my son ever thought I'd do. He told me once that he spent a whole night reading a site I had and he was amazed. He said, mom who made this? That was before auto sites. And I said, I did, I made that fucker! LOL, so proud of my dumb home made animations. Now he's gone, but, I think of him giving me that old computer and not taking no for an answer, what a smart ass he was that day. He knew. He knew I'd be here, right here talking to you. I don't know how he knew, but, I'm glad he did.
*
And this site, Dirty Disher. Man, it's become something so special to me. A place where I can have an opinion about anything and I have people who actually read me! You guys just make my whole world better. I live in a place where there is just no opportunity to meet people like you, people who think like me. I live in a town so small we don't even have a movie theatre. And yet, here I am, talking to the world. What a world we live in, eh? What a world.

I've been reading your blog for over 2 years. You always make my day. I enjoy reading your posts and your insights. Your son gave us all a wonderful gift when he gave you that first computer. I know he must be smiling from wherever he is knowing that you make our lives just that much more interesting.

I think the internet has changed my life more than anything else that has come along in my life time. Hubs and I call it 'the magic box.' I'm addicted.

Tricia, that's a fun question. I'd like to hear where everyone else is from too. My husband and I live in our RV and are in Branson, Mo at the moment. This is our home base, even though we are a good 30 years younger than most of our neighbors.

I've been reading you for ages and I love visiting - you are a terrific writer, DD! And I know what you mean, I don't feel so alone either, because of the internet. I don't fit in all that well in real life, but I sure do have a blast writing blog posts - mostly because I 'meet' the most amazing people that way, who get me and I get them too.

It is so amazingly cool. I'm 47 and this is just what I needed when I was a kid (and later too) but hey, it's never too late.

I'm in Canada, by the way, but I grew up in NYC.

I am totally addicted to the internet and the DD! When my computer had to be replaced last summer I was without one for about 10 days. I kept wanting to look things up, see what was going on in the world, check up on my favorite sites...it was a weird feeling...like on of my 5 senses had gone missing.

The internet has also changed and improved my life more than anything else this decade.

Your son was a wise and insightful man when he matched you up with a computer, and wouldn't listen to "no".

Thanks for being here, Pat. The community you have established is as unique and fascinating as you are!! Take care and I hope you soon solve the mystery of your symptoms.

I am in Central Texas btw.

I kind of have a hard time believing any single person who says they never had a cyber love affair. Hmm. But, I still think it's awesome how someone can sweep you off your feet just by typing. Think about that. Wow. It almost makes me sad that I gave it up. LOL.

I found your blog back in January of this year by following a Gosselin link. At the time, I was so sick, I was creeping around the house like Boo Radley, not doing anything but sitting at the computer. I love your blog, Pat. I've read all of your past entries now.

It truly is a small world now. I live in a fairly small-ish town but we do have all the amenities, with many larger cities close by. I've lived in many, many places, but I came back home to Arkansas to roost in my later years.

Along with several others, I, too, met my husband on the internet. We've been married 10 years now, been together 14 years, and I adore him. We've both said that meeting online is different, because as you get to know each other, you don't CARE what they look like, it's what they say, how they invoke an image, their essence that matters, and it can lead to wonderul love.

My daughter also met her fiance online, and they're going strong. My son met his first "significant other" online (sadly, the SO passed on, after they were together five years). The SO was born with many medical problems, in a wheelchair, but my son didn't care, he loved him, his words and his essence. My son traveled all the way to Ireland to live with him for the last five years of his life.

As for computers, I began in the early '80s (yes, we had computers back then!). It all started with a C64. I became somewhat "famous" for composing music on that silly little machine.

Since 1984, I've never been without a computer. It's part of me.

You learn everything you can, and you learn it quickly. I am amazed by you mom. I wish I had your abilities when it came to taking in information and processing it as quickly as you do. When it turned into a more personal blog I loved it even more. Thank you for being a star out in the cyber night, DD, and remember: for every vile troll out there, you have at least 50 people who adore you and love your site.

Ava's Mommy, I am also from PA. What general area? To all those in Ohio and NW PA, I used to live in Erie for two years. My husband called it Dreary Erie. I spent hours digging out two cars from two feet of snow right before Christmas 1999. We were leaving for the holidays and my husband was afraid the weight of the snow would collapse the roof of the car we left behind. We have fond memories of it though. My sister went to Edinboro and now is married with two beautiful girls after meeting her husband there.

I guess this post really sums up what being brave and going out of your normal comfort zone gets you. A great big thanks to you Pat for bringing together such an awesome group of people. Great bigs hugs to everyone out there.

Hi All - -

I've been without my home PC for an entire 5 days. I've been reading all the comments on my tiny blackberry but haven't been commenting because I always have too much to say for those tiny keyboards.

I've been online since 1989 - ish. I bought a Mac IIe from my roommate's company for $75. That and a modem allowed me to email what became my husband . . . now my ex. Of course, my new love was met on Facebook. Shit happens for a reason and the more I read about people hooking up on the internet, the more I believe it is the greatest invention since drive-thru fast food.

I've had many different internet addictions. Sometimes gaming, sometimes chatrooms (oh that whole a/s/l crap would piss me off) and various message boards. I've been to medical conferences and met people that were from a particular site specializing in children with the same condition as my child. I've had contact with 'real' celebrities, had my picture and posts on Rosie O'Donnell's site and even Twittered with Jerry Seinfeld.

On Facebook I've been able to undo a wrong. When I was 7 my best friend was a 5 year old boy. He moved. Then, in HS he was a freshman and I was a Senior. HE DID NOT EXSIST. His mother sent me a graduation card and I felt guilty.

Now, 30 years later I can talk to him on FB and tell him what a shit head I was!!

I'm also in touch with my nieces and nephews. I might not have been if it wasn't for Facebook.

Thank you, Eric, for knowing your mom better than she knows herself.

I'm in San Jose, California . . . for now! :D

Hey DD, I have been reading your site for years, never posted before though! Just wanted to say thanks to you and all your other readers for making me laugh, cry and everything in between.

I am an Australian living in London, so can't imagine life where a lot of you are but still feel like I am with friends!

laughing -- points to me -- yup I got the brunt end of Pat a few times in my day - LMAOOO -- oh Pat those were some days!!!!! Hard to beleive now ehe?

I love your site and if it wasn't for that crappy chatroom, I would never have met ya, so it did bring me some pleasure.

That puppy keeps me busy, but I am going to try and make it in here more often as I do miss it and you and reading your stories.

Take care

Hey guys, I found the blog through a friend and I can't go a day without checking it.
Even though I don't post, it still feels like you are part of a family, maybe that is why I come here, my family is screwed up so I'm looking for some type of normalcy.
Does anyone know what happened to Eric in San Diego? He was on here and then when you switched blogs, he posted there and then when you switched back, I never saw him again.
BTW, I'm in South Carolina, a cold damp SC at that! I HATE COLD WEATHER!!!
