Hamburger Helper Microwave Singles

Bored, I decided to do a convenience food review. I bought these for Lissa, she definitely eats different things than I do sometimes. She likes them. I just tried one and in the taste department, they score an A. Very cheesy and the meat tastes fine. In the convenience department, sadly, they score a D from me. The take around 6 min to cook, which means the bowl gets way too hot to hand to a kid. You have to dump them in a second bowl, which means 2 bowls to wash, because they come in a packet. The price is good though, but, I think from now on, I will just pay extra for the ones that come in a microwavable container. There also is not enough in here for any child over the age of 6 to have these as an actual meal, you'd probably have to use two packets anyhow.

I have never seen this. But its probably loaded with sodium and thats a no-no for me.It's the sodium that ruins everything. It's not necessary. Living w/o salt has not been a bad thing for me. I don't even know where the salt shaker is in my house. Too much salt here probably for a kid too. Just sayin'. We have no idea how much salt till we start looking. It's astonishing. Instant food = excess sodium. And sadly,we all use it when we have to.

Yep, the manufacturer's use cheap products and put in too much salt. Salt is supposed to enhance flavor, not BE the flavor. This product was not salty tasting though. But, the sodium content was a shocking 25% (in the cheese mix). I won't be eating them again for that reason.

I'm with you Rox and also take in to consideration all these individual servings and all the packaging and what a waste of the earths resources. And it's not just this particular product. It's everywhere. I'm not picking on you DD. Lis likes what she likes and the generation raising our kids was raised on this kind of stuff. They don't know any better. Just a product of advertising.

I'll bet you could make your own..I'm going to experiment with that.

When my kids were little we made fun of Hamburger Helper and called it hamburger slop. You can make it from scratch.

I'll bet you could pre package individual helpings of mac for your kids, tell them to add a cheese slice and dollop of catsup and that'd work. Add a sliced up hot dog when it's done and they'd like it just as well.

I am gluten intolerant and can't eat almost any packaged or convenience type products.

You *can* make this from scratch. Start with a roux base: equal parts butter (or oil) to flour (or cornstarch). Add the warm milk and then slowly add shredded cheese, then spices. You can cool this, add to pasta cooked al dente and then freeze in containers. If you use recycled containers (ie butter tubs), don't microwave in them!

Hope that helps DD. I do this with pasta for my kiddo. But he likes his pasta baked, so I bake it in a casserole and then freeze in portions.

We tried it once and I didn't like it. I'm very supper picky about food. I cant even name one thing I really like to eat. I'm also with Rox I have to watch the salt. I love salt but it doesn't love me. I dont even think ava would eat this stuff. She is super picky to. She is know on a chicken nugget and fries diet. I freakin hate it. I swear one morning im going to wake up and find she laid a egg.

Usually when I do hamburgerhelper I use vegetable and less meat in them. I add a little bit more spice etc. My mom cant even tell the difference when I make it. She thinks I cook like her.

Ava's Mommy -

Heh! That's too cute. My kid will only eat pancakes or grilled cheese when we go out to eat, so when we travel that is his diet. Our families think that is all he eats.

Kids are funny how they get on one food item for months. Lissa does that.

I microwave eggs in old margarine containers. They work well if you don't have to micro the food very long. Eggs and cheese are really good microwaved and the margarine containers clean real easy. Glass for micro eggs is impossible to clean.

I avoid sodium as well, and reading the packet ruins it for me. I had to learn to cook because we took turns cooking on assignments and if it sucks, you don't hear the end of it for days.

My favorite quick 1 pot meal basics are garlic, onion, pepper, frozen chicken breasts and about 2 pounds of beans.

I soak the black beans overnight and then bring to a slow boil, add the frozen chicken breasts and chopped garlic and onions. Let it simmer until the chicken dissolves and the beans are tender (about 4 hours more or less). Season to taste. minimalist!.

Potatoes or greens are good with it, and it's filling as well as delicious and nutritious. After a couple of days the beans just get better.

Oh yeah, add hot peppers like serranos for an added kick!

Jarhead;
That sounds delish!!
I am so trying that. That's how I cook my lentil soup, except with sausage.

*shudder* I hate Hamburger Helper with a white hot passion. Too much of that shit when I was younger. Only we were poor so we never got the hamburger part of the helper only the noodles in that jacked up sauce.

Anybody have a deep freeze? I just got one a few weeks a go and I have been making lots of dishes from scratch and freezing in individual servings. I'm hoping it'll be cheaper and healthier that way.

My kids plow through food. Those Ham Helper Singles would be gone in one day. I didn't know you could microwave eggs? How long? A minute. I'll have to teach my son that.

Yep, microwave that (beaten) egg for 40 seconds to a minute. But DD - you should use some PAM or something in a mug or bowl when you do that. Those plastics release toxins when they are microwaved that they only release when heated!
Then again, maybe you want those toxins and it makes your food tastier. *smirk*

I actually like Hamburger Helper. My husband is a chef and so I'm not allowed to eat stuff like this or fast food but every now and again he'll make it when he's lazy. Last month I went to visit my family and got to eat a McGriddle from McDonald's. Now THAT'S good!!!

Once in ahwile I have a bite of Lissa's SpagettiO's, they are tasty..in small doses. LOL. I never fix hamburger helper, the reg size, we just can't eat it all. We LOVE tuna helper though, have you tried that? I can't make tuna casserole that good. It's yummy. I throw some frozen peas in.
