The only time the brakes might kinda sorta work in those conditions is if you shift into nuetral first. HAHAHAHA My first solo car trip in those conditions was at the corner of 114th and Pacific in Omaha. Thank gawd it was 6 am on a Sunday morning. Did my first 360 and shit my pants! I was raised in SoCal.
You must be getting the same snow I'm getting today. THe difference between Iowa and Colorado is that the snow melts here between storms and in Iowa the first flake that falls is the last one to melt in the spring. Be safe Pat.

Rarely get ice/ freezing rain around here, but do get lots and lots of snow. What I have to watch for is the black ice at night ... after the roads have been plowed clear during the day & the melted snow freezes at night. Nasty stuff.
escrow, I was shocked at how warm the cold was in Colorado. Sweater weather. The same temp here and you can not breathe it's so cold. I guess it's the humidity.

We have a very steep hill that we have to go down to leave our street. It empties into a four way stop..a busy four way stop. One year, I was taking oldest to school (youngest did not have to go yet). We start down the hill and I very quickly realize that we are going to be in trouble. It was an ice skating rink. I had to hit the brakes because of the STEEP hill going into the intersection. After a few blood curdling screams and careful maneuvering..we did not end up in the intersection. We ended up facing the top of the hill. We completely turned around. I said You arent going to school today and floored it up the hill and back to the house. I did not shit myself and surprised I didnt. LOL
Heidi, your hill story cracked me up. I lived on a steep hill also on the downside and I would always slide right by my driveway. The dipshit that I am finally figured out go one block over and come at it from the upside. Problem solved. All these fair weather gals and guys just can't understand until they have lived it. :)
Pay-yepyepyep, it's the humidity summer or winter. I love Colorado. We get all 4 seasons and none are severe. It was 48 yesterday and I was out and about in flip flops and a tshirt.
It is all in how you drive in it. When the conditions are as bad as that video, you just stay home. We just had almost two feet of snow dumped on us..Blizzard of 09. The roads are still a bit messy but I like it that way. When it is clear (no other cars) and you peel out a bit on a turn and the back of your car does a little fishtail..I love it!
That is from our news station in Seattle (King 5). We got this horrid ice storm in the PNW, then a huge dump of snow on top of the ice. The entire PNW was stopped. But people were at work when it happened and had to *try* to get home. Cars were abandoned on the freeways, ramps, all over the place. Hotels were full, it was a mess!!!
Year before last, Michael and I decided we were going to the Grand Canyon for Xmas. Don't ask me why--we were hitting other places along the way. After driving from south La. we were finally in the northern part of New Mexico and it started snowing and the TV was showing that type of video. We both freaked and turned around and headed SOUTH. No snow, no ice! We did get to see the Marfa, Texas lights and I was happy. Still think there is a scientific explaination, but I was curious enough to freeze my back end off one night. People in my neck of the woods do not own clothes suitable for that type of weather.
My second thought is----car insurance rates must be astronomical!

We got about 3 inches of snow yesterday. Today it has been sleeting and the temps are falling. Everything looks like glass outside right now. Not good for all the people from out of town driving around here (Chicago) tomorrow. It's especially bad by me since I'm right across the street from the airport.
A few years ago, right before Christmas, a plane slid off the icy runway, went right through the fence, and hit cars in the street killing a 7 year old boy. It was pretty shocking to see a 727 sitting in the middle of the street where I travel daily. I think about it every time the weather gets like this and I'm stopped at that light.
I go to bed and miss all the trolls..it always happens Dammit!
