How tall is a lamp post?

I'm wondering how tall a city owned lamp post is because the drifts here have a lot of them covered. Not even the knob on top is sticking out of the snow. The cold continues with bitter freezing frost that makes your face sore and burny just walking to the car. My battery finally shit itself and gave up. It cost almost everything I'd earned the other day to get the car running again. But, I got a warenty on the new battery. The roads are slick and icy, the ones that have been uncovered. One crappy lane cut through the mountains of ice and you hope you don't meet a fool going the other way. Or at least you hope he knows how to back up. I got to the main road and things looked okay, I couldn't see anything but straight ahead because of the massive drifts. I ended up behind an idiot who slammed on his (yes, HIS) brakes and he spun in circles causing me to go "uh oh" and try to stop or at least slow to a snail crawl when I hadn't planned on either. I spun out too (thanks male driver) and ended up under a semi truck. Good thing he was at the stop sign. Good thing I drive a short car. I thought, crap, it sure is dark in here. I spun my wheels until I finally made contact with some dirty snow and got out. Then the defroster broke and I had a patch I scraped about the size of my hand to see through. Finally made it home and the old lady came running out and said "I forgot to tell you to pick up my pills! You have to go back out." It was dark by then. I didn't know you could drive by braille, but, I guess you can. Hmm. I HATE January. And we're supposed to get 6 more inches tonight. Are you kidding me?

Bring out the huskies and the sled!!! This sounds serious. Man, I really don't know how ya'll do it. I would end up like Jack Nickelson in the Shining and start chopping people up! Are there more maniacal killers in the north than the south? If there are, I bet I know why! Hope you didn't get hurt. I asked this once before---how are ya'll fixed for insurance. Does everyone get their dents and dings fixed when spring comes or do you leave them alone?

Dirty Disher said...

LOL at insurance. I don't know about them there rich folks, but, I have liability only. It's the law, you can't drive without it. I haven't had a fender bender since college though. My car isn't worth worrying about. Long as I can stay out of numbnuts way, I'm alright. That guy tonight must have been from the South. Good grief, who slams in their brakes in solid ice?

Dirty Disher said...

Ya know..it's road salt that does a lot of damage here. I've heard people with new cars complain about it. It fucks up the paint.

Would she have died without her pills for one night??? If the answer is no then you should have waited till morning... your life was in danger out on the road...

A lamp post should be way taller than a pile of snow. I'm speechless it just sucks.

Dirty Disher said...

She doesn't give a shit about danger for me. She said it was life or death, they were heart pills!!!! She reminds me of Sanford and Son..'member that? Elizabeth, I'm comin!" No, you're not. LOL.

Dirty Disher said...

Noelle you got out just in time, I'm tellin' ya. This is one of those Winters the old timers talk about. When they had to dig tunnels to feed the live stock. It's just ridic here.

Dude I am so totally not going to bitch about this shit we have been getting LOL It has been mucho shitty over here in oHIo also. I would not have minded this shit a bit during break but no, the shit was unleashed just as it is time to go back. I have to drive an hour to an 8am class tomorrow and Thurs and Fri when we are supposed to get yet another snowstorm I have clinicals an hour away from 2:30 to 9. Ughhh. Little old women and men are notorious for overreacting on ice and slamming the Hell out of their brakes. How do you live that long and not know to NOT use your brakes or use them sparingly on ice!

It was 28 today and I felt like Nanook of the North. It's supposed to be like that all week. This is what we call a hard freeze. If I didn't have to work, I would be in bed with a book all week. By Friday I will be yelling..."Here's Johnny!" at school. The kids should be totally nucking futs by then. We don't do cold well down here! Might have to sacrifice a couple of kids to what ever god covers frozen pipes and busted boilers. (I forgot to say, we didn't have heat today---boiler's busted.) Like I said, "WE DON'T DO COLD DOWN HEAH YA'LL!!!"

valle said...

man i would be scared to death driving in that. I'm a snow driver, but not that kinda snow.

Dirty Disher said...

Man, I can drive in about anything, but, this is seriously tough and it's getting real old. It's harsh out there.

Dirty Disher said...

Bayou, busted boilers suck! At least my puny heat stove is kicking. It won't heat the house, but, at least the kitchen here is warm. Sleeping is almost impossible when it's below zero.

A snow globe sitting on the TV froze and broke. Nice. Real relaxing in there..not.

link to a pix...it's winter spelled out in snow with a middle finger...saw it on failblog and thought of you!

LOL I saw that, but, they don't have enough snow to bitch about it yet.

I may live to regret saying this, but I'll take my Lake Effect storms over the shit you have. Between Sat. night and this morning I got between 15-20". Starting a couple miles south of me to below the county line & from just over the Ohio border to the far side of my county they had over Three Feet. Every school in my county, the county south and part of Ohio were either on a two hour delay or canceled. And the dudes are calling for more every day this week. But, at the moment, NO ice.

Bayou - My sister teaches in TN. She just told me her district is on a two hour delay for tomorrow - due to cold. What wimps. Forecast high for Tuesday - 29.

Snowglobe froze!! No thanks!! Get a plane ticket down here and I'll put you up in semi-comfort in semi-warmth! Snow doesn't sound so inviting now. Remind me about this in the summer when I'm bitching about the heat!

Dirty Disher said...

I'll just stay in here 'till it warms up. We have an air mattress I can get out. Lissa said it's just like a fancy hotel. LOL. Yeah, and real near the fridge in case I get hungry in the middle of the night!

i'm in akron ohio and i think total we've gotten 8-10 inches overall the past week....we got about 3 inches overnight and another couple today and they are saying perhaps up to 7 inches thru tomorrow night....lake effect snow...no ice though....

Beats me why this little area got hit so hard. Maybe mother nature decided to see if we're stupid enough to stay here. :)

It's a very odd winter.

We're looking at minus degrees, with wind chills of -30. That is unheard of down here! We're expecting a "couple of inches" of snow, but when the weather people refuse to state exactly what's going to happen, you know it can be bad.

The outside faucets have already frozen, so we're in management control. Spouse will get more enforcements tomorrow.

I normally prefer a cool house, but for the next few days we have to leave the furnace up. I'll surfer through, but I insist the bedroom is cool.

The cat is hunkered on the couch under two blankets.

It's a very weird start to the year.

Remember to feed the birds, and put cat litter in the trunks of your cars. Steer into the skids, and go to neutral before hitting the brakes. I used to live in NY (lol).

Really weird winter.

Have you seen any penguins or polar bears yet? My gosh, what a winter you are having!!!
We once drove down around Crater Lake in the south of Oregon in July. The roads were totally clear, but the snow banks they had cut through to clear the roads were taller than our van. That, my friend, is the closest to what you are experiencing that I have ever been through.
It really worries me to think of you and Lissa, barely able to get any heat going, in your home. How do people survive, really? Absolutely incomprehensible to me.

Dirty Disher said...

I just got up. It is now 24 below zero. That's not wind chill. It is actually 24 below zero. The water is frozen. I am not happy!

Northwest Illinois is having subzero weather, but we've lucked out on the snow. One big snowstorm and some ice here and there. I feel your pain, Pat. Frozen pipes are the worst How about an electric blanket to sit with?

Dirty Disher said...

I'm okay. It's rough, I won't lie, but, I closed off the rest of the house. It's warm in the kitchen and the pipes are banging. A trickle is seeping out. I think they might thaw out without a plumber. I hope so.

Dirty Disher said...

I just checked, it's supposed to get up to 13 degrees today. The sun is shining. Please unfreeze pipes!

Do you have any little electric heaters u could use? I bet you wont find one for sale around there now! Hope you have some. I always think of you whan I see the weather for Iowa. I feel awful for u. It's freaking cold here in Indiana too. Not alot of snow tho. But the temps are very cold. Not as bad as Iowa. Seems you guys always get w/e is crossing the country. I just want some warm air to come across & thaw us all out. Thank gawd for budget pay on my gas bill and for the thick insulation we just put in the attic. We had zero insulation, just wood flooring! It was awful. The house is much warmer. But I still fear high gas bills and keep the t-stat at 61! I also like my house on the cool side. Menapause causes that! But DD please get some heaters going. You could get very sick and you cannot do that!!

Your pipes may thaw alright. I work at a plumbing company. But beware, they usually burst when they unthaw! It has happened to me many times. Old houses, new houses, doesnt matter. We fix lots of it this time of year. Be listening for spraying water, it means you are unthawed & busted! You need to know where the main shut off for your house is. Find that and make sure its in working order. You may need to know real fast!

Calm down Rox, lol. I live in Iowa, 'member?

I lost my big tree this summer, the one I always hung my bird feeders from, so I rigged up something off the deck and finally got them up. Three days and I haven't seen one bird out there, so they either forgot about the banquet up here or someone else is taking good care of them. Makes me feel better, I feel so sorry for the birds in this weather.

I am really sick of this really cold weather we are having here!! Saturday morning it was like minus 27F and that was without wind chill. It hasnt gotten above 0. And now we are meant to get 2 to 5 inches of snow tommorrow!!
I called my parents in Australia on Saturday night to tell them the temperature. They are not use to that sort of weather (they think
40F to 50F is cold for winter). My Dad with his humor wanted to know if there was any penquins or polar bears outside the house. Haha

Below zero here in Kansas, more snow tomorrow. Have to go to work and hope I make it home. This winter is starting to feel like a horror movie. I flipped my car a couple of weeks ago so now I drive so scared of ice. I so want to move!

The Jeep GC is my car. I have not been able to drive it cause of the surgery..soon baby soon!
So hubs has not been starting it OR brushing the snow off.
Now there is a freeze in the line.

No snow forecasted in our immediate future but it is coming..I can smell it.
A bunch of us were thinking that we are due for a mini ice age like the one in the 1700s. This has been a hell of a winter compared to years past. Makes me think of when i was kid in the 1970s. Lots of snow and you could ice skate on the frozen ponds.
