I just found THIS article on old makeup. "Over time bacteria can infiltrate them, only to be transferred on to the face and cause irritation or even infection. But the average make-up bag is a hoarding space for items that are four years out of date, a study shows.
And some women hang on to items for up to 15 years past recommended use-by dates.
Old mascara wands can breed bacteria that lead to conjunctivitis, which causes redness, itching and swelling."

Logically, I know this stuff, I didn't when I was younger and into makeup. I shared with friends and kept old mascara's for years. It seems to be the main culprit for bacterial infections. But, also lipsticks, lip gloss's and blushers are suspect and even your make up bag. I just went and threw out a bunch of old stuff. Reading "herpes, ringworm and impetigo, an infectious disease that results in blisters" was enough for me. Throw that crap out!

Knowing all this keeps me from wasting my money on impulse makeup buying. I ran across an old lipstick recently in a coat pocket and made the mistake of opening it. WHEWWW. Smelled like rancid. Rancid does have its own distinctive odor.
I don't share my make up with anyone. For the most part I don't chuck it until it gets a funky smell or stops working properly, mascara definitely gets to that point pretty quickly. I know it's a no no but I probably have some 10 year old eyeshadow kicking around. I also rarely use eye make up and have never got an infection or anything nasty like that.
I use my makeup up well. After 6 months I get rid of it. My mom always taught me that. I never over buy anymore. Plus I never share with anyone. My daughter has her own little chapstick when she wants to put a little gloss on.
Here here DD ita and to this I would like to
add that creams and lotions as well. The skin
is the largest organ on the human body and
readily absorbs anything thru its pores. Many
people who lack the mineral magnesium Mg
are told by their doctors to soak in a bath with
some Epsom salts once a week. The other
item u should keep an eye on is medications
do not injest olde Rx and vitamins et al u can
become deathly ill. Take care of your bodies. Kiki
Good point about lotions..I didn't think about that. And I'm guilty of keeping old ones "just in case." I'm gonna toss them too.
And does anyone else hate old tooth brushes? They freak me out. I buy the 5 for a dollar packs and never use one more than a few days.
Speaking of toothbrushes. Most of us keep them out on the sink or counter in the bathroom. When you flush the toilet there is fine mist that is dispersed into the air that ultimately land on every surface in the room including your toothbrush. Please shut the lid before flushing.
I give my old make-up to cat ladies then take a deduction.
Crabbie you are too00000 much ! LoL

DD it's so nice to have you back and in fine
form too. I must say I love the variety of topics
today. Thank you for this forum. Kiki :)
I am good about the mascara and the rest I use up before it can go bad...well, maybe not lipstick and eyeshadow. And somewhat on the same subject, I recently read you're supposed to replace your spices every year. Those suckers are expensive. Seriously, how many bay leaves can you use in a year? My dtr. cleaned out my cupboards last year and found cake sprinkles dating back to 1976. Honest!
Don't forget about make up brushes to! Either clean them on a regular basis or use Qtips etc :)
man I don't wear makeup every day and I have stuff thats a few years old. as far as the toothbrush thing, the thought of shit sprinkles on my brush grosses me out. my vanity has 2 drawers that ours are in . you could probably wash your makeup brushes in the dishwasher, but I won't since I'll be using them in my old eyeshadow anyway.
I use very little makeup---especially mascara. I really need it but I keep sticking myself in the eye and that really hurts. After a while, I just give up. I just don't look in the mirror!
If you take care of your spices, keep them dry, out of the light, and fairly cool...they are good for years. Whoever told you to replace them must not take care of their very well.
