Sorry, I have a bug today. I typed in "flu" and got that image. Well...okay then. So, tell me, what's on your mind?

Sorry you're not feeling well DD.

We got back last night from Cancun. We laid by the pool the entire time. While we were gone, our town got about 5 inches of snow which is a BIG deal. I'm glad we weren't here.

Oh, NO RING! I guess I'll have to ask! I'm trying to work up enough courage to do so.

Hope you start to feel better!

Oh sorry you feel crappy Pat. I hope tomorrow is better for you.
Yesterday was Oldest`s 21st birthday. It was an absolutely gorgeous day all around. The temps were hovering near 50 deg F, the sun was out, and everyone was in a good mood. Her present is money toward her fourth tattoo. She is getting it today.
So what do I wake up to this morning??
About 2-3 inches of snow on the ground!
It isnt very cold though. Hubs and I were throwing snowballs at each other..LOL
He got one on my neck and went down the shirt..that was the end of that!

I bought seeds yesterday. For gardening at home, I bought Kale and Swiss Chard. They grow too big to be in the beds at the community garden.
I also bought beets, cauliflower, peas, carrots, a radish mix, and I think that is it so far.
Has anyone grown cauliflower before? How big does the plant get?

Palmetto girl; does he know you are expecting a ring?. Good luck with your plans.

I am thinking about the Marines in Afghanistan. I hope that this is not a repeat of Sadr city, where we took the town twice because Amb. Brenner thought it to aggressive to put Americans out front and offending Shiite Iraqis.

An 11 man Target Interdiction team (hit squad), assassinated a Senior Hamas leader in Dubai. They were in country for less than 19 hours and killed the guy in his hotel room by suffocating him. Common knowledge suggests that Mahmoud (Hamas Cmdr), was on his way to Iran to plan for acquisition of enriched uranium for a dirty bomb.

The Israeli intelligence community said that Mahmoud was also responsible for 2 kidnappings of soldiers in the past 3 years.

Nine years is too long to fight anyplace, finish it or bring'em home. Hold politicians accountable for their hypocrisy.

Biden wants to take credit for the surge in Iraq!?. I remember Harry Reid declaring the war lost, Obama saying the surge would not work, and Biden wanting to split the country in 3 pieces. makes me sick.

love the pic! Hopefully today will be the last day the kids are home from school due to the big kahuna storms we had. I'm worried about the kids that walk to school. We don't have sidewalks in my hood and the roads are plowed to one lane only. I'm thankful I have a car to drive my kids.
There's a weather website I've become a fan of called footsforecast.org. It's a teacher with a team of student meteorologists that due weather prediction. They're pretty good.

I'm sorry you're not feeling well today, Pat. I hope it isn't anything serious. I also hope your mom and your aunt stay away and let you get some rest.
The picture is adorable, by the way.
So far it's just errands, today. Took Andy to school, he was so tired that he fell asleep on the way there. Came back home and organized bottles and cans (my mom always gives me hers, too) and plastic shopping bags and went out and recycled. It was to early for the pharmacy to be open, so I came home and took care of my chickens. Went back out to the pharmacy and checked the lucky numbers at Bi-Mart, and then came home to sit for a few minutes before I load the dishwasher and washer, and clean the kitchen.
I have a lot of cleaning to do, and I'll get the most done while my husband is still sleeping.
Yesterday I worked the full twelve, and had a really nice patient who never did go into labor. They were going to turn her off, and restart today.
It's rained lightly this morning, but things are good right now. Think I'll go out and see if there are any peas or sweet peas raising their little heads, and if not, I'll poke a few more in the ground.

If I can ask to have anyone who wishes keep us in your thoughts or prayers, I would love to have more positive energy for tomorrow. This commnunity is awesome and everyone who has given me advice or well wishes have really helped me in this process. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

More snow. 5 inches so far. Shocker!

Get some rest Pat, hope you start to feel better....

I love this picture! Very sweet. Hope you don't have the H1N1, DD. I was soooos sick when I had it. The sickest I'd been in my adult life from any type of flu. High fever and every time I took a deep breath the pain in my chest was off the richter scale. I was so delirious from the high temp etc that for the first few nights I was singing nursery rhymes and little kid songs to myself--which I had never done before:)I got on the anti-viral med on the 2nd day but I don't know if it helped at all. And, it lasted a really long time. Acute stage lasted 9 days but did not feel all better for a month. It was real bad.

DD, the Bayou Gardener has seed packs for sale. Do you think it's better to buy individually or to get his group of spring/summer?

Pat, Sorry you are feeling under the weather. Just take it easy and take care of YOU! That pic you posted is so cute. I love pigs. They are highly intelligent creatures. If I had a lot of land, I'd get a pig along with cats and another couple of dogs.

Bohemianmoon said...

Merette~

Dogs are natural predator of pigs :( I guess it would be ok if you were going to keep them in a secure pen that dogs could not get into.

I really want a pig (and a donkey, for that matter), but I wanted a pot belly pig so it could come inside the house on the lower level in regulated rooms, and we were looking into it. From research I found that it would be a no go because of our puparoos.

Maybe once the puparoos have passed on (and God forbid that be any time soon) we will look into it again. Buy that time, though I may be too old, lol. Pigs can live a long time, assuming that they don't become sausage, bacon and pork chops!

Pat,
I hope you feel better soon. You cannot catch a break this Winter. Of course the Winter from Hello that is never ending doesn't help I am sure.

Moon,
I had a pot bellied pig as a gift from a friend. We though it was a Rita but we ended up naming him Russel the love Muscle because of finding out he was a he when he humped the couch pillow and his cork screw came out. He was such a sweet pig and I had him for 7 years. He went in a litter box and was leash trained. I loved that pig but he got too big for my apartment. He went to live with a farmer and died about 10 years ago. I was heartbroken that I had to give him up but I didn't realize the diet you had to follow to keep them a manageable size. They are very clean animals!

Hi DD, hope you feel better. The flu sucks. Those pigs are cute though. I've heard pigs are smart and make good pets. I will stick with my cats though.

I am depressed. I got rear-ended last week and hit my head on the steering wheel. It also jarred my jaw and now the symptoms I had from grinding my teeth are even more annoying. At least I get free physiotherapy now...I couldn't afford it before. I also have stiffness in my neck and back, ugh, hopefully this will help. I also have a black eye and when I go out in public everybody keeps looking at me like they want to ask if I got beaten up. Nobody's had the guts to do so so far though.

My brother was in the car with me when we got hit and he *freaked out*. He does not want to even drive on that road anymore. Oddly enough my other brother got rear-ended on that road too a few years ago. Maybe he is right and we should just stay away from it. It's not even that busy though.

Heidi said...

Thank you Bayou. I kind of figured the cauliflower would be big when the package told me to plant 4 seeds per mound..LOL

I also read that when the head is baseball size, lift and secure the leaves above it. This protects it from the sun. When the cauliflower grows bigger then the leaf papoose, it is time to harvest. So cauliflower, kale, and maybe collard greens will be grown at home.
It snowed and hailed big time this evening and I had to drive in that shit! Yuck!

This discussion about pot-bellied pigs made me laugh.
A few years ago, someone gave the owner of the stable where my son was riding, a small, cute mini-pig.
He was so cute - would snorkle around, play with the goats, etc.
He was a smart little bugger.
Smart enough to jimmy the latch to the feed room and gorge.
450 lbs later, he wasn't so little.
They really do have to be seriously policed in their "dietary" needs.

Heidi - cauliflower is almost identical to cabbage in size and growth habits. Those leaves are tied over the head to keep the cauliflower as white as possible.

Pat - how awful that you've come down with the flu. You've had such a down time these past weeks - hugs to you, stay warm and drink lots!

Jarhead & Bayou Jane,

He is very aware that I'm ready to get married. He was married once before and he has the "been there, done that" mentality.
I am definitely going to bring it up, specifically before this tax credit for first time home buyers expires. Otherwise, if he says no, then I lose the chance to purchase a home with this credit which I think expires in April.

Jarhead, you are so right about bringing the troops home. They have been there long enough. The sad thing is that most likely when we do leave, the place will revert back to the way it was prior to us going over there, such a waste of time and horrible loss for the soldiers who lost their lives fighting.

DD, I hope you're feeling better soon.

Palmetto Girl I hope you get the ring you're looking for. Meanwhile, focus on appreciating the qualities in the person you love, open communication, building and refining your relationship and taking that into the future with a happy aura wrapping you both. A ring is a thing.

Jarhead, So sick of the morass of smarmy political rhetoric designed to accomplish personal agendas using honourable, dedicated people who are doing the right thing for the right reasons for the wrong people.

Bayou Jane, I thought it would be over by now too. I guess the one thing politicians will always follow through on is their endless capacity for not following through, affecting needed change and in the end disappointing us.

2010 is not a leap year. Leap years can be determined by dividing by 4.

Ronnie, I had pelvic misalignment issues after childbirth. My whole body changed shape completely in the pelvic/hip region. I was so absorbed in caring for a newborn I didn't realize how much pain I was in or that I was walking/shuffling like a hunchbacked old woman to compensate for it. Also had my tailbone broken at the same time. A chiropractor did wonders for the pelvis issues. The tailbone will never be normal but life is still good.

It's March Break here in Munchkinland where everyone drives like idiots and March/Spring Break lands in February in the middle of winter. We have a new layer of snow covering all the old dirty snow and it looks beautiful. I like snow and cold far more than hot. I feel badly for those of you who are negatively affected by it.

What do you call it when a person thinks that normal inconveniences are caused by people who are doing it intentionally? I think a friend of mine needs mental help. Their aged and ill mother with whom they have been living, has been coughing for three days and they think she's been hacking up her lungs to annoy them intentionally. Am I the only one who thinks that is mental?

Palmetto girl don't fret about the ring thing so
much. Try not to but ask yourself if u can live
without him in your life ? If u can't then u don't need
a ring it's him that matters first. If he loves u and u love
him that's the important part. Remember a ring is
just a symbol like the way that a marriage liscence
is to the govt getting involved in permiting you to
marry. I wish you happiness and to find a peaceful
middle ground to talk to your Beau and realize
what's the most important to you both. Let him know
by all means but do not expect anything if you
keep this position u will not be disapointed & when he
does give u a symbol of his love and committment it
will be all the sweeter for you both not to be forced but
accepted with eloquence and grace. Good luck :) Kiki

Interesting, Moon, I had no idea that dogs are natural predators for pigs. I know they definitely use dogs (often pit bulls) for hunting the feral pigs that are becoming so dangerous in many states, but never thought of it that way. Baby pigs are cute, and in our previous home, we had neighbors on both sides of us that had pot-bellied pigs. They were never any bother to us, and were interesting to watch, but were never our thing. The donkeys, though. . . I would love to have a couple of those, and a couple of goats. I grew up with goats, bunnies and the occasional chicken.
Our place is too small for the donkeys for sure, and maybe for the goats as well, but we do have chickens, and I will be getting more next week:).
Palmetto Girl----I am sorry that you didn't get the ring you want. Has he known for a long time that this is something that is important to you? Having "been there and done that" is not the same as doing that with you. I hope you stick up for what you want with him.
I hope you're feeling better soon, Pat, and that your mom and aunt have at least temporarily been caught up in the celebrity lifestyle, and have forgotten you. (I have a dry sense of humor--please don't be offended.)

DD- I'm wondering if you feel better or worse today? Wish I was there to make you hot tea etc.

Heidi- I want to hear all about everything you plant. DD's gorgeous veg + flower garden is what hooked me to this site. I want to plant veg's this year-have not done before.

Jarhead- Thanks for your post on the hit squad. I had not known that happened.

MuserMominPA- I'm wondering how you and your son are today. Lots of healing prayers sent your way. Hoping the tubes do the job and eliminate serial ear infections. I'm assuming that's why he needed them.

Ronnie- SPD is not fun. I did not have it but know all about it. The pain is intense. What month are you in? Some Moms notice symptoms in 1st trimester, others experience the separation during birth or post partum. The pain can radiate to lower abdomen, inner thigh & groin. If you are a swimmer for exercise, do NOT do breaststroke. Is this your 1st baby? Vaginal birth is preferable. Spreading legs is tricky so best positions are "all-fours" (hands + knees) or side-lying. Squatting will be too painful, as will be the most common birthing position, sitting with legs wide apart. Make sure that you tell all the nurses that you have SPD--the downside of an epidural is that the pain of separation will be masked and you could be put in positions that only make it worse; this you would not find out until the epi anesthesia wears off. Thank goodness, once the cartilage softening hormones decrease it totally goes away. Just because you have it this pregnancy does not mean that you will in subsequant pregnancies, but you might. PT, Tens Units, accupunturists and chiropractors are often recommended. pain meds sometimes used to. What did your Dr. say to do?

A nurse was holding him when we went back to see him. He was a little fussy in the car on the way home but as soon as his coat was off he was on the floor playing. He took an early nap and his appetite is down but otherwise he is doing very well. Thank you Moon, NancyB and everyone else for the well wishes.

I'm glad this is an open post because there is something I wondered about for a long time.

If a person is standing on top of magnetic north, which way does the needle of a compass point?

I did have this explained to me one time, but after I thought about it a while, I really think that person was shooting me a line of BS.

Can anyone explain this in simple terms?

Pat, when you feel like it , can you clear something up? Is Hollywood and Aunt Ruth the same person?

I've got to go back to work tomorrow. Holidays are good but it just makes it harder to go back.
I'm just getting back into the groove of doing things. Had a girls day out today with my sister. I had forgotten what it was like to do things on the spur of the moment and not have to worry about rushing to get home. Palmetto, I was married for 35 years and I can tell you, the ring is the last thing you will regret not having! Be patient and live in the moment. Pat, are you okay?!?!?!

We are getting worried here :(

NancyB said...

Bayou Jane,

Sorry--Well, it tries to point straight down...but since it can't, it just spins in circles. But there's more to the north magnetic pole. It's location isn't fixed in one spot...it's moving! And quite quickly.

The north magnetic pole is slowly drifting across the Canadian Arctic. In the last 50 yrs or so it's started to move faster. Scientists are constantly checking on its position, but because its location is now in the Arctic Ocean, they can only visit the location briefly each spring. It's drifting away from North America so fast that it could end up in Siberia within 50 yrs.

Wait...there's more! The location of the pole is moving but as it moves, it also wanders around! On any given day it can be up to 80 km away from where you think it is. This wandering is due to disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field, caused by sun particles hitting the magnetic field lines. These same particles cause the Northern Lights.

If the north magnetic pole does end up in Siberia in this century, Canada & Alaska could lose their Northern Lights. Sorry for long post but I find the poles as fascinating as the sky changes that occur during the vernal + autumnal equinoxes. DD must be feeling really badly to not post all day. I hope that's not the case.

In map reading there are 2 "Norths", a Grid North which is the one that you use to mark bearings and orientate through in a map.

The second is the Magnetic North, which is adjusted through a "declination diagram", which gives you the degree offset to True North (Magnetic).

After you mark your bearings on the map, then you add or subtract the number of degrees necessary to convert your azimuth from grid to magnetic. The number varies depending on your location around the world and the offset to Magnetic North. Once you have that then you can follow your compass in sync with your map. Declination diagrams are found near the legend at the bottom of the map.

The Mag North does shift, but I don't know about the speed at which Nancy B mentioned. I think that may be from East Anglia U. data, because I have been reading maps for almost 20 years and the dec diagram has not shifted that much.

I was bored and went to see what Heckman was up to and his blog is deleted... did he finally cave in/accept defeat and is waving the white flag??? Just wondering since I never really understood what was going on but I knew he was messing with Pat and that is NOT a good sign in my book.

I hope you did not get the swine flu. It was awful when the kids got it last fall. I was literally Florence Nightingale. I did not get it. I guess I am immune from when I got it back in the 70s.

It is in the upper 40s today and I am going to continue the Spring Cleaning quest. I already scrubbed away all the baked on grease behind the stove. Today I tackle the pantry!
LOL
I sound so excited, dont i? Not really in the mood but I did not do it because my back was so bad..so I am catching up.

Hope you all have a good day today.

Jarhead,

I actually read about the rapid movement of magnetic north in Scientific American magazine, but I can't locate that article so here is a link to N'tl Geographic.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/12/1215_051215_north_pole.html

Sorry, Jarhead, I must be doing something wrong--I can't get it to link highlighted & underlined. Do you have any idea how to do that? I used Ctrl C then Ctrl V. Oh well.

DD I sure hope you are OK-Hugs to you

Jarhead--to make it easier:

In 2005, National Geographic wrote:

New research shows the (North magnetic) pole moving at rapid clip—25 miles (40 kilometers) a year.

Over the past century the pole has moved 685 miles (1,100 kilometers) from Arctic Canada toward Siberia, says Joe Stoner, a paleomagnetist at Oregon State University.

At its current rate the pole could move to Siberia within the next half-century, Stoner said.

"It's moving really fast," he said. "We're seeing something that hasn't happened for at least 500 years."

Stoner presented his team's research at the American Geophysical Union's meeting last week in San Francisco.

Lorne McKee, a geomagnetic scientist at Natural Resources Canada, says that Stoner's data fits his own readings.

"The movement of the pole definitely appears to be accelerating," he said.

The shift is likely a normal oscillation of the Earth's magnetic field, Stoner said, and not the beginning of a flip-flop of the north and south magnetic poles, a phenomenon that last occurred 780,000 years ago.

National Geographic now points out that the pole is shifting at the rate of 40 miles, instead of 25 miles, per year.

Miss Tia...if the spirit can open the oven door, it should be able to bake. Leave out a couple of recipes and see what happens.

NancyB...thanks for the info. I could almost understand most of it. It was in a language I could relate to.

Jarhead...I have trouble setting my GPS so understanding all of that was way over my head. Glad you could figure it out. I guess the guy who tried to explain it to me the first time wasn't shooting me a line of BS because it did sound like your answer. I'm just glad none of our armed forces had to depend on me for directions because right now we would be at war with New Zealand. I'm the kind of person who has to turn the map upside down to understand it!

Thanks to both of you, I now know the little needle would just spin around in circles!

Miss Tia-
Bayou Jane's post about the spirit's baking and your response gave me a great big laugh!!! Thanks to both of you. Miss Tia-what is the weather in NE OH?

So glad to know DD posted--she must be REALLY sick because when she was so ill a few weeks ago & hospitalized she still posted. Also when I found DD's GORGEOUS garden blog and spent that weekend reading all the posts from that Blog and this one, I was totally amazed to see that when her dearest son, Eric died last year, she continued to post. That really really moved me. I know that I would not have been capable of functioning at such a high level, as she. So, I was getting really worried. She must feel horrible and I sure hope someone is loving her up! Her daughter Casey J lives a few hrs. away is that right?

Escrow- Glad you reminded me about the Sticky Chicken--I'm going to make it tomr.

I also came back to thank whomever posted the recipe for the sticky chicken...we made it tonight, and my husband proclaimed it the best chicken he's ever had lol. We marinated thighs in the sauce, then baked the whole thing in the oven. I had to thicken the sauce with some cornstarch at the end...but it was fantastic. So... thanks!!

OK, now I am intrigued... where can I find the "sticky chicken" recipe?

weather in NE Ohio right now is around 30 degrees....sun was out today and it got about 34 and snow started to melt--can see my street!!! i forgot it had been brick!!! suppose to stay around 30 the next few days but we might get another inch or so of snow....

Pat...glad to see the "family trolls" didn't get you! It's been one hell of a winter. Peace and health my friend!!!! All the candles are burning and a new supply of good gris gris is coming you way!

Peg said...

Melissa, I was looking for it too and found it a few topics down. Here it is. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow.

Sticky Chicken is all about the sauce.1/2 cup balsamic vinegar1/2 cup soy sauce1/4 cup sugar1/4 cup packed brown sugar2 Tbl honey3 cloves garlic1 Tbl fresh ginger(I use my microplane to grate the garlic and ginger)1/8 tsp pepper
Combine all ingredients in a non-stick pan and reduce to around half. The longer you reduce the thicker and stickier it gets. Grill or roast your chicken then coat in the sauce and pour over your hot rice. I used 2lbs of wings tonight and that amount of sauce was just right for 2. This sauce is also excellent with pork! chow down!

Nunya said...

Pat I'm so glad to see you back. I was starting to get worried.

Hi Pat! Glad to hear you are ok.

I made the Roasted chicken you all mentioned a few days ago. I emailed it to my sisters and made another one for my brother who's with me right now. He won't touch a dish to help unless you throw it at him, but he makes for good company and is not bad at cards. The crispy skin is excellent.

How about the software engineer that flew into the IRS building in Austin!.

Us Jarhead heads need a pic! :)

Heidi said...

Yeah Jarhead..I read about the guy briefly this morning in the news but I have the paper so I can really see what has happened. They are saying there are 2 confirmed dead and everyone is accounted for.

Hubs and I are going to venture into new food territory today. I am roasting beef marrow bones in the oven. You spread the cooked(it is like butta) marrow onto toasted french bread pieces and add a little sea salt.
I will let you know if it is a Yay or a Nay!
Anyone else try this before?
The bones are cheap as hell. We saw it on Anthony Bourdain once and it is just one of those things we have to try.

Melissa said...

Thanks, Peg! I will give it a try this week-end.

Peg said...

Heidi, I buy and bake those bones for my dogs. (If you're talking about shank bones) They are the only bones they can't chomp through. My Chi's love chew stuff and will work for hours trying to get the marrow out. I've seen Anthony eat the marrow. I don't think I would want to try it. Anthony eats anything, so I'll wait to hear your opinion.

Heidi said...

OMG! It is like beefy butter. Both hubs and I both gave it the side eye at first. It is not glamorous looking at all. It is the consistency of spreadable scrambled eggs. If that is possible. Once you spread it, it is like butter. Sprinkle a little salt on top and it is really good.
Not good for your cholesterol count though..LOL

My Chi is standing next to me with this forlorn look on her face. What about me?
I would not make this an all the time thing because of the pure fatness of it..but we can say we tried it and if it was ever served to us someplace..we would know how good it is.

Bohemianmoon said...

I like that Andrew Zimmern (sp?) guy that does the Bizarre Foods show on the Travel Channel. That dude will eat anything.

To everyone:

What is the most bizarre food that you have ever eaten? And did you like it?

I am not very adventurous, unfortunately. My most bizarre foods have been pretty common foods in another country - Scotland - blood pudding and Haggis. UGH on both the blood pudding and the Haggis. Blood pudding is like blood (DUH! because that is what it is) and the Haggis tasted like the smell of a dark, dank, musty, moldy, 500 year old dungeon.

Oh yeah, and Spam in the US, lol.

I like Spam - I haven't eaten it in 30 years, but I do have decent memories of it.

escrow said...

Andrew won't eat Durian. It's a fruit from Asia that he describes having a smell like rotting flesh.

Bohemianmoon said...

Escrow~

I saw that one! At least he tried it.

I liked the bugs he ate that he said tasted like Tuity Fruity Gum. I remember that gum. I still don't think that I would eat the bugs - I can't remember what kind of bugs they were, but I think that they were alive.

EEEEEEEEKKKKK!

ronnie said...

Thanks for the help, guys. I am going to see a chiropractor - I just want to run it by my midwife first. It's not fun but I can handle the pain as it is now. It's just reading scary stories about women who end up on crutches or in wheelchairs that is getting me all worked up. I'm 22 weeks along now and it looks like it'll be another boy to go with my 15 year old son :-)

Christina said...

I like Andrew Zimmern, too. I remember the episode with the Durian, and that he spit it out. (something I've never seen him do otherwise) I think it made him gag, if I remember correctly.
I haven't eaten anything adventurous in many years. My husband likes fairly ordinary things, but he does eat something I don't like. He is Hungarian, and they eat a kind of bacon that is smoked only, not fried or baked, etc. The smell and flavor of it is good, but the texture is as if it was still raw.
Other than that, just what many people have tried---squid, octopus, etc.---nothing off the beaten path.

Bayou Jane said...

My daddy was very adventurous and grew up somewhat experiencing the "great" depression. They had cows, pigs, chickens, and always a garden. They lived on the edge of town and were able to have that kind of stuff. So when they butchered an animal, everything was used. We used to be able to buy blood sausage when I was young and I have eaten it. Being young (and liking most foods), I would eat what my dad said was good so I tried a lot of things that might make most people cringe, but I'm glad I did. I truly love hogs head cheese which is not cheese and crackling or gratons. The Mexicans call it chichirons--I think and I know the spelling is way off---kind of like pork skins but not puffy. I have eaten fried tripe which I remember liking. Now this is the kicker...I remember eating calves' brains and eggs (scrambled). I suppose I liked it then but don't know about now. There is something some cultures down here eat called chitterlings. I remember my daddy trying to cook this one time and my mom (who was a very agreeable person and put up with a lot of things he did) made him throw the pot and everything in it out in the yard. The house was stinking for days and the pot was never brought back into the house. That was one time she really put her foot down and I was afraid she was going to put her foot up his backend! I have eaten thistle and I would still eat it now if I weren't so lazy. Daddy showed me a way to make powder puffs out of the thistle flowers. The plant flower had to be a certain age for it to work. I wish I knew how he did this. There are a lot of old ways that are becoming "extinct".
Does anyone have some "old ways" that you remember and will share?

Bayou Jane said...

Heidi...if the shank is the same as a soup bone, I have eaten that. I never told anyone but I always eat the marrow out of the soup while I taste for seasoning. I have a small cup of soup to taste and by the time I have it seasoned right, I'm too full to eat anymore.

miss tia said...

they sell chitterlings here in stores and they even sell them in like 25# tubs!!! always grosses me out!

Heidi said...

BJ,
Yup, it was the soup bone. The marrow was good!

Besides that..the weirdest things I have eaten recently are Scotch Eggs on Christmas Eve. I really liked those!
And I had stinky tofu at the local Thai place. It was actually really good!

ronnie said...

Oh, I love blood pudding! Delish. I guess it sometimes comes down to what you were exposed to in childhood.

I think the most disgusting thing I ever tried was jellied beets. They are really not for me.

Peg said...

I love beef kidneys (I prefer them cold out of the fridge) You do have to soak them overnight to get all the urine out before you cook them. My husband told me to never make those smelly things in the house again. There were 7 of us growing up and they are cheap but they're quite tasty. I also like beef tongue, head cheese, pickled pigs feet, any kind of liver, gizzards, kishka (blood and barley sausage) and limburger cheese on rye bread. I wouldn't eat a bug if you paid me.

Since Comcast just decided to add The Travel Channel about a month ago, I watch Anthony and and Andrew every day. Andrew wont touch the Durian but Anthony chows down on it.
