It's hard for me to even think about gardening, it's snowing here again. It's cold and not pretty. I know I'm gonna plant a few tomato plants because I really liked fried green tomatos and you can't buy green tomatos. I'll have flowers and lots of herbs. I found the herbs to be the most useful thing I planted last year and I'm quickly running out now. Are you guys planting yet? I won't be able to set anything out until May, it's just too wet and cold this year.*
March snow is just so depressing, everyone is so over it. Coloring eggs and hunting them..in the house? That pretty much sucks. The smell of 3 dozen boiled eggs, two cracked ones, in the fridge nearly gagged me this morning. But, the kid had to have them because no one else will do that with her.

So, gardening..I can hardly think about it now. It's a state of mind, and I'm not there yet. Are you?

Oh DD, that is terrible. We were buried under so many feet of snow this winter and the warm weather this week was such a relief. Every patch of charcoal coloured snow has FINALLY melted away. I hope you have a warm spell soon.
It is beautiful here in SE Texas. I started cleaning out the flower beds last weekend and cutting back the dead wood.
I am fertilizing the grass this weekend.
I'm also going to start cleaning the deck so I can restain it.
I think spring is finally here.
I'm thinking about starting a container garden this year. It gets so damn hot here that you have to be able to move things into the shade or it will burn up.
DD I hope you thaw out soon.
it's been nice here the past few days but we're suppose to get rain and cold in a few days--they had said snow but that has changed to just rain.....
allergy season has arrived and it SUCKS!
think i'll just have potted herbs and a couple pepper plants again this year....gonna fence off the strawberry plants so the dogs don't tear 'em up.....and i have my raspberry bushes too....
Your garden and stories of fresh produce for dinner have inspired me to put in a garden. I'm thinking a few tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, onions, radishes, beans, asparagus and then maybe a few blueberry bushes along the side. I bought a bunch of marigold seeds because I've read that they repel pests, which would be the only reason I plant them. My co-worker came into bags and bags of daffodil bulbs and brought them in for the taking, so I was really looking forward to getting those in the ground, but this snow has sidetracked that project :(
Pat, You are so right about planting being a state of mind.
I am not there yet either. Saw
pansies this morning at the General Store. I should have bought a few packs but just too
overwhelmed still by the remodel
projects in the house. Maybe by
Mid-May I will get with it.
This past Thursday it was 70 here in Chicago. Yesterday it was in the upper 60's. All of my hostas and tiger lilies are coming up. 2 of my violet plants had flowers.
Today we're getting 1 -3 inches of snow. Right now everything is covered and it's coming down hard. It SUCKS to be here right now.
Happy first day of Spring!
Hey Pat, I live down south so we have been working in the yard and garden all week. It has been so pretty and warm, in the 70s. But it is raining today and temps back in the 30s tonight. Yuk. But the good thing about down here is it will be warm again by Monday.
Do you grow a specific type of tomato for green tomatoes or just pick any kind of them while they are green. I have never made this but would like to try it for hubby.
Sorry you are still socked in by the snow. Hope it ends really soon!
We seemed to have missed that snow that you got here in Southern Minnesota. Our snow is nearly all gone, and i was enjoying the 50s on Wed/Thurs....until we got a cold snap again on Friday which was only in the 30s. Hopefully the warm weather continues and no more snow!!!

I am definitely in the planting/gardening frame of mind, and very, very frustrated right now.
On a positive note, the peas that I sowed a month or so ago, are up. They are about 1 1/2 inches, or so, and look really healthy, but only one of the sweet peas came up. I mixed several packets of different ones together, short and tall, and resowed a few days ago. We'll see what comes up.
Today is the day that my husband was supposed to rototill my mom's community garden patch for her. (We have a big, rear-tine tiller.) I had wanted him to till a few areas for me, as well, but yesterday he injured his back at work. It is a gorgeous, bright spring day. . . and between vicodin and flexaril, he is completely useless. I can't quite wrap my mind around the fact that he spent most of six months doing nothing, physically, and then, five days after his return to work, he is injured, and can't do anything physical. I know I sound totally selfish, but this sucks.
My allergies are in full bloom, also. It looks like something on the maples is in bloom. The cherries, pears, and magnolias are already in bloom, or finished.
I had so wanted to get my beds ready, and wanted to work (with my husband) on the new coop, but it looks like none of it will happen.
The check hasn't come yet, either. Met Life continues to drag its feet. Yesterday we couldn't even find anyone there who knew anything about the approval of the claim. Who knows when they will do anything about it.
So sad that her parent's won't do eggs with her. What else is she missing out on? And her mother is set to have another. So sad.
I thought we were ready for spring but it looks like we will have another cold spell tonight. I've heard low 30's, but I don't know. It seems it's going to be a one day thing. That's alright by me. I promised I would not think garden until I've done my taxes. I just can't seem to get in the tax frame of mind. I guess most people are finished with taxes by now---I'm a procastinater in most things!
We are not done with taxes, either. My husband has done ours for the last ten years, or so, and he keeps procrastinating. At least that's what I call it. He says that he is waiting to make sure he gets as many of the updates, as possible. Apparently there are updates almost every day, and sometimes more than once a day. I think they should just put out the programs and have done with it. No more dribbling updates!
We had beautiful shirt-sleeves weather today, but it is gearing up to rain tomorrow. The clouds are coming in and the winds are gearing up. Like a summer storm coming in.
Sorry. Anon @ 9:54 was me.
Miss Tia...do raspberries grow like blackberries? Are there any thornes?
Angie...asparagus is OK if you have a lot of room--in order to get enough ready to cut at one time
for a meal. I planted a few one year not knowing what to expect. I was sorry I hadn't planted more.
Funny you should ask! The snow finally receded from the frozen tundra of southern Wisconsin followed by a glorious week of warm weather.
Then last night, it snowed. Just a couple of inches, but it was depressing. The chickens, who had been happy and frisky with the onset of better weather were back to their whimpering. They hate the snow as much as I do. Luckily, most of it melted today, and in a few days, we'll be back to better weather.
I consoled myself by planting (indoors, under lights) three kinds of tomatoes (Juliet, Brandywine, and Amish paste for canning pizza sauce), eggplant, jalapenos, anaheims, and poblanos, sweet bell peppers, basil, parsley, and cilantro.
BTW, I've been meaning to say, I read through your old gardening blog a few months ago - LOVED IT!!! Especially your idea of giving kids packs of seeds and letting them plant where they will. I'm trying that with my grandchildren this summer.
Katherine
Christina...the only people who might thing you are being selfish have never been in your situation or don't know the whole story. I didn't know your husband had gone back to work. Hopefully this won't keep him down very long.
Didn't you say you had gotten in touch with your state insurance commissioners office? Have you heard anything from them? Insurance companies can be the biggest pain. All we want is for them to pay us what we pay for! And in the same timely manner they expect us to make our payments. Is that too much to expect?
Try to keep your spirits up!
Bayou Jane---Yes, we did contact the state insurance commissioner's office, and my husband filed an online report. They said it would probably take two or three weeks before anyone got back to him, and I think it's been between one and two weeks, so. . . nothing yet.
Sorry for the whining. I just find it difficult to go back to my husband just lying in bed sleeping, or playing video games all day. He doesn't lift a finger when he has anything at all going on, and so it's been more than six months since he's done a dish or a load of wash or anything. We have so many projects and things to get done, and they are things I can't get done alone. I would have to hire help, and can't afford to do that. Oh, well. . .this, too shall pass. . .
yes, there are thorns with raspberries....not like rose bush thorns though....i grow golden raspberries and they are DELICIOUS!!! i will never ever buy another red raspberry plant!! (i don't like black raspberries)....golden raspberries are sweet and juicy and AWESOME!!!
I won't tell you about the weather we had yesterday...you won't want to read that!
When I lived up North I had the snow. Gray, dirty snow come this time of year. It would warm up and muddy season would start.
I hope you get into your gardening again soon because I LOVED reading about it last year. I want so badly to have a green thumb, but it just doesn't work for me. I kill anything green despite my best efforts.
Our weekend has been beautiful so far. You will get Spring soon enough Pat!
I cleaned up all the stray leaves and did a bunch of dead heading yesterday. I was not able to do it all last year because of my back. I have a lot of catching up to do. I have some things to cut down today and I think I will plant some cold weather crops in the front yard.
Here in Maryland it was the most gorgeous week. Rain is coming in tomorrow, but it will be in the 60's and clear again Wednesday. We took the Harley out yesterday. It was nice, but cold when the sun went down. Walmart's lawn and garden department was insanely crowded. I just enjoyed the day and didn't do much besides clean out the shed . I want to plant tomatoes for the first time this year, and would like to try strawberries maybe. I almost bought the strawberries on QVC until I read the customer reviews. They sure do make it look easy on QVC. The reviews were terrible.
Wow, I certainly have rambled on here today!
valle---strawberries are extremely easy....what was off putting? (not knowing what was written on qvc)....i got like 50 plants a few years ago and they have spread like the dickens....i must have almost a 100 now....
This weekend we planted, red cabbage and regular cabbage, spinach, collards and strawberries...the peas are poking thru and so are the onions and we still have seeds for next month! Loving this garden...so far!
