The magic touch..Dog Whisperer

Niki has this habit, which can be cute or annoying, depending on my mood. He jumps on you and bites and barks...and barks..and barks. I know what he's saying, he wants to play. But, he never gives up and his yap is ear splitting. I know HE knows what I'm saying too..stop, down, no...he just chooses to ignore me. So, I went and watched a bunch of The Dog Whisperer. You ever wonder if that Ceaser Milan is a fake? I mean, come on, he takes a dog that's been psycho for years and in a half hour he changes the dog. I finally found an episode on Hulu where he dealt with an excited dog like Niki. He showed this technique where he rolls the dog on it's back and touches it's chest. Not hard, but, firm. And the dog calmed right down. I tried it on Niki and it worked the first time. I was like WTF? Are you kidding me? When I let Niki get up he cocked his head and looked at me like, damn, I guess I should calm down and be quiet. It's worked every time for three days now. It even works after I let him have aggressive play time and he's all worked up.
*
Now I'm addicted to The Dog Whisperer. And I am the pack leader. I hope it works when Lissa comes to stay overnight. Because the two of them, combined, make my ears bleed.

I could have given a rat's ass about The Dog Whisperer until my husband went back to Iraq and left me with two small kids and a ten month old Rottweiler. I watch him all the time now. Calm Assertive...it really works!

DD, I LOVE the Dog Whisperer. Is you go to his website, he just lost his beloved pit bull, Daddy a few wks. ago. He was an amazing dog. I just got a mixed breed (shepherd/beagle mix) this past Sat. He has been in an outdoor kennel for at least a yr. and was using the concrete floor as his potty so I was fearful how long it would take me to actually house break him. He is officially housebroken already, using Cesar's techniques. I am a big fan of his and it does work...like everything else, it has to be emfprced regularly.

He's amazing. He really does understand the mind of a dog and his techniques really work! I'm sending you an email with a pic of Moose and the new pup (we named her Sniffy), so keep an eye out for that.

LOL @ "Im the pack leader"
Thanks needed that today

WE have a new scottish terrier pup. a male. We already have a 2 year old female scotty. So, this little boy is teething and he is a wild Indian! We found out if you freez wet washcloths & let them gnaw on them they love it & it clams their chewing & biting down. Huck Finn is 11 weeks old. I will try this calming technique too. Also, if they are do nip or misbehave, say "No" sternly and turn away & ignore them. They hate being ignored more than anything. He will learn. We have a ways to go with our little one, but you gotta get them trained when they are still small or it gets harder as they age and they ahve alreadt established they are pack leader & they "own" your house! I get it! I watch Victoria Stillwell "It's me or the dog". Good show. She turns some wild dogs around too. I wonder if I should get a clicker? If he acts bad we are supposed to shake a empty can with pennies in it at him to startle him. He wont like that sound & he should stop being bad. My luck he will love that damn can & eat it!!! Gotta try what we can! He's soo stinkin' cute!! Thanks for the tip Pat! Will use it!

Pat, I love those pictures!!! The doggie smile in the first one is so cute---he loves you!! The second one with the white muzzle tip is so sweet, too.
I don't watch Dog Whisperer, but I do respect what I've seen of his techniques, and that is exactly what he does, is make the human the pack leader. It is amazing how well it works, and I am glad to see you got an instant fix like the chest touch.
I love "Huck Finn" as a dog name. My husband has mentioned our little doggie family being incomplete, so who knows, maybe I will steal that one, one of these days.

You displayed the classic alpha dog behaviour. You made Niki show his belly. Gotta call you alpha bitch now! LOL

Nikki certainly looks like he's thriving DD.

The man knows what he's doing, he's the real thing. Some of what he does amazes me. I found the can with the pennies works well, unless you have sensitive hearing then it annoys you as much as it bothers the dog.

DD... it sounds like you also plan on turning Lis over and rubbing her belly! It might work! Lis might like it!

I used Dog Whisperer techniques to train my Golden Retreiver--notoriously hyper and rambunctious dogs--and she is now at almost 4 years old, one of the best behaved dogs I have ever known. Making her walk right next to me on leash was what, I think, did the trick.
All of my other retreivers were crazy, barky, jumpers till their dying day.
Ceasar Milan is the best.

I just think the dog whisperer is amazing and people can learn so much from him. It's not really the dogs who have problems, it's the people most of the time. Seems to me the biggest lesson you can learn is that dogs are not people. And they don't want to be people. It sounds so simple it's crazy.

yup, you gotta be the Alpha dog. I am the Alpha in my house and have been ever since we started having dogs.
I think i will try this technique when Perl (our chi) gets yippy. It can drive me insane. Once she was barking at who know what out the window. I got tired of it and said Perla, get down now! She shut up, climbed down, and sulked into the other room.
I will let you know if the tummy rub works for me.

I love Cesar Milan. I think he's great, but a lot of the things he teaches I think are common sense. Being calm assertive, firm, not rewarding with love at inappropriate times, etc. Some people are just good with dogs and some aren't though. Simple confidence has a lot to do with it.

I'm the pack leader in this house, and not just of the dog.

I guess Ceasar wouldn't approve of me feeding my dogs off of a fork?

lol...that's funny! If you find a way to make it work on kids, please write a book.

I LOVE the Dog Whisperer. I know have a very calm pound puppy who I never need to use his techniques on, but I had a psycho Pom before this one and I used his tricks all the time!

Heidi/DD - another of Cesar's moves is when the dog is misbehaving (barking at strangers, visitors, attacking folks at the door, etc.) he puts them down on the ground also, but he puts like a "claw" hold on them on the side of their neck. It's what the mom would do w/them he said. And mom knows best!

escrow- nothing wrong with feeding your dogs off a fork, as long as they take it politely and are not rude about it.

My grandparents raised Bouviers on a farm in Northern Ontario. They taught us all that Dog Whisperer stuff when we were tiny. They just used different terms, called it common sense, and would make fun of us if we let a mere dog outsmart us.

Everything Cesar teaches is correct - if it works on your dog! Funny how that is, huh? Sometimes he has to change tactics when he sees that whatever he's doing isn't working. Same for any dog - if you're losing patience, try something else. Patience and not giving up on the dog is the key.

Everyone in my family is a pack leader from birth. No one had a choice about it LOL but the main thing is, you set the rules. Not the dog. How you enforce them is up to you (NO cruelty, which should be a no-brainer but we all know lots of people who have no brains) but once you have it established, you'll be able to control the dogs subconsciously, without even trying.

It is nature in action, and therefore it always works.

He's no fake--I'm addicted too. He has my unqualified respect. The remarkable thing about Ceasar is people call him to fix their dogs and he ends up fixing the people! One of the magical things about him is that he understands that dogs live in the moment. That it doesn't take a week, month to break a bad habit. He shows that it happens immediately. He talks about energy and vibes a lot, which makes me wonder if he was a Hippie years ago. Example-Don't think that the way you hold the leash isn't immediately transmited and felt by the dog. I am so happy that he came from Mexico to help us Gringos. I'm loving the Nikki pictures!!

Caesar Milan is truly amazing! We watched a bunch of his shows after we got Harvey (our corgi) and his techniques are wonderful. We are the pack leaders and Harvey is very comfortable with that. It also helped with potty training. Before Caesar I thought you potty trained a dog by rubbing their nose in it. He taught us so much! He's amazing!!!

Loved that South Park episode where Cartman's mom hires "the dog whisperer" to deal with Cartman's severe behavior issues. The tecniques worked perfectly, and he rapidly turned the sociopathic Eric into a well-mannered, polite, obedient child. It was awesome. Unfortunately Cartman's emotionally needy mom destroyed all Cesar's good work by immediately reverting to her usual dysfunctional parenting style that put Eric back into full psycho control. The episode was quite satirical, but it seems the South Park creators are big fans of Cesar Milan as well.

I bet that same thing happens a lot..a dog is trained by the expert and then the family reverts to bribery and other "easy" fixes as soon as the expert is gone.

Your dog is adorable!!!! I love it that he calms to your touch.

Anonymous, I loved the part where Cartman's mom and Caesar got Kentucky Fried Chicken and ignored him while they ate it.

Cesar Milan truly has a gift. He amazes me every episode! And I was soooo sad at the loss of his beloved pit bull Daddy. It really is the owners who need the training the majority of the time. I think that's so funny.

I've been fascinated with him for the past couple of years. I think he's awesome and his is one of the few TV shows I'll watch. My fave episode was about a terrified dog (Luna, I think).

I didn't know he lost Daddy!! That's so sad...

I'm still not fully trained since my chihuahua barks when dogs walk by our door. But now she waits for her meal and asks me with her look if she can start eating. I do think chis are a little harder than some other breeds because they're so intelligent. And I did it all wrong for the first 6 years and we both find it hard to change some things.

Niki's really cute and all puppies are a handful. The calmer with them, the better, as I learned from a friend's mistakes with her Sheltie.

Unlike some trainers. He is the real deal. I think he is one of the best. I hope everything you learn DD from the dog whisperer will help niki. Soon enough he will get the deal. Good luck DD take care.

Escrow, I've made total beggers out of both Niki and Bee. I don't see a problem with it. I like sharing with them.

@escrow, all 4 of my dogs will eat off a fork. They are all very polite beggars. No jumping up by the labs but the Chi's will jump up and sit on the chair next to me. Ever so often, I'll feel a paw come up and touch me on the arm just to remind me they'r sitting there. The Labs just sit there but you'll notice them getting closer and closer until you can suddenly feel them bumping your leg with their chest. Still, no jumping up and no barking for food. Probably because they KNOW they are going to get something. My cat sits there right along with them. If you wait too long to give them something, you'll see strings of drool hanging because their mouths are watering with anticipation of getting a morsel.

I can leave a piece of food on the corner of the table and say "Don't touch it" and they won't but then the drool puddles get a lot bigger.

I can't remember the last time I had a meal to myself.

Peg, Your story cracked me up! Sounds just like my house except the golden starts leaning into me and he weighs 90 lbs and can knock me over. And then if I leave one tiny morsel on the plate for too long the lab starts talking to me (barks) LMAO!

LOL.. THanks Kiki. Im almost 22 weeks. 85 percent its a girl. At 3o something we will have another ultrasound. To make sure the sex.

my fat cat begs as much as the dog! She reaches up and touches your leg and yells at you when she smells something good.
