Due to stressful economic times, a wanna-rexic moves in with a Freegan. The Pro-Ana movement is challenged by the Freegan who tricks Ana into overcoming her fear of food by convincing her that dumpster diving burns calories. No one pays for groceries and hilarity ensues.*

my oldest was talking about this freegan shit.
There was a 20/20 thing on it because there is a small freegan movement in NYC.
You cannot imagine the kind of waste that grocery stores and eateries have to throw away.
Things still in packages and nothing wrong with them but for some reason they are not allowed to donate to homeless or food pantries.
I do not think I would do it unless I had to!
The grocery store I buy most from has a shopping cart they park over near some hedges late in the evening. They put all sorts of things (non-perishable) out in that cart for those who are going hungry. I am assuming that those items are close to due-date, but not gone.
As far as produce, the store produce manager told me that I could not buy shop-worn or slightly old stuff that they are going to toss. I had asked them about older produce for my birds. They said that in the past, they had allowed people to do that for their animals, and a guy took it, ate it himself, and got sick. It caused a problem for the store, legally, so they stopped doing it. I'm not sure how secure their dumpster is, but I don't want old stuff for my birds badly enough to check.
I think the Freegan movement is fine, but, they need to shut the fuck up about consumerisim. If it wasn't for trash they'd have to get a fucking job.
I come from a long line of dumpster divers..no thank you. But, to each his own.
