Obama clears way for oil drilling off US coasts

WASHINGTON – Reversing a ban on oil drilling off most U.S. shores, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced an expansive new policy that could put new oil and natural gas platforms in waters along the southern Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and part of Alaska.
*
President Obama says this will create jobs in America and "move us from an economy that runs on fossil fuels and foreign oil to one that relies more on homegrown fuels and clean energy." And of course, it will be done with the environment in mind.
*
In other news..Nearly 90,000 Iowa households behind on their heating bills could be disconnected. With 90,000 disconnect notices sent out in February, and $35.8 million in owed fees, am I being simplistic in thinking the U.S. shore drilling is not going to help real people? It's not going to get better. Or cheaper. Who's really going to benefit from this?

I'd like to believe this is all part of some shrewd plan by Obama to shut up the right wing about drilling so we can then move ahead with a sane, workable energy policy. Like, let this fruitless drilling go on, so everyone can see that there's NO MORE OIL LEFT TO BE FOUND, then tell everyone we have no choice but to get off oil. But maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

Yep, I agree with the last paragraph totally. Very disappointing--throw billions to the thieves who are responsible for this financial meltdown and NO help for "We The People". I am actually furious about this whole situation. 90,000 people-yikes that is just in one state. Heartbreaking.

Yep. I agree completely. I don't think there are any great, untapped reserves here. I heard that if they did build a pipeline to where they want to drill in Alaska, it would take about ten years to build, and then it would supply us at our current rate of consumption, for about four or so, months. It is completely fruitless, and I do not think that there are any great deposits off the Atlantic seaboard, or the gulf coast, either. Unless there is going to be a very long pipe that goes across to Venezuela and taps their fields. That would be one long pipeline, though.
I think that people should have the right to have heat in colder parts of the United States. It should be subsidized. It's a no-brainer for me. Like health care. Please take care of the needs of the people here before you go around trying to fix the world. There is no reason for people here to die from lack of health care, lack of heat or water, or hunger. It's inexcusable.

I view it as a pro-active move on Obama's part. There's been plenty of drilling down in the Gulf, producing satisfactory results. Geological surveys must be showing positive oil fields - enough to justify drilling off the East Coast.
The U.S. has to shake off its dependence on foreign oil sources -they have us in an economic stranglehold.
Here in N.E., homeowners who can't afford heating oil can contact R. Kennedy - he worked out a deal using oil donated to the U.S. from Venezuela.

Here's the thing about using the fossil fuels that are within the US borders...they are expensive to get to and then the cost to turn the crude oil into usable fuel will be higher than ever. On top of that, Americans will be working in the fields and refineries and other unemployed Americans can not afford them. It's a bad idea. That's not even touching on what it will do to the environment in the long term.

How about instead we try to find a way to stop our own people from freezing to death in the winter and dying of heat stroke in the summer and work on a way to be self sustaining.

Let's not kid ourselves. My son is in Afghanistan because we are dependent on fossil fuels. Do you think our last president, whose family fortune is based in oil refineries, really went to war over WMD?

It's over fuel. It's always been over fuel.

Maybe it's me and it being that I'm Canadian
and such is the dynamic. But I feel as if this
is the first good idea obama had. Why not search
for oil close to home? They do it up here in AB
& est PetroCanada as a result. A dear ;) friend of
mine is working on the developement of GOPLATS
gas & oil platforms for drilling offshore. It sounds
innovative afterall necessity is the mother of
invention. We need oil & gas that's a given today
in our lives. The future is unwritten however I feel
that the greatest urgency in future years to come
will be a source of fresh clean drinking water.
I live on the smallest of the five great lakes and
if I'm concerned about water at this early stage
I'd say get ready for a bigger dilema to come folks.
James Lovelock was spouting on about this iceberg
melting wellllllll duhhh guess what dude an iceberg is
an excellent source of trapped fresh water ! Kiki
