Okay, all you house plant people..Biz needs your help. This is her plant and man, it looks sad. She loves this plant, it's special. It belonged to her uncle who passed away. Now, it's not like she suddenly got it and did something wrong. She's had this plant for 5 years. Now, suddenly, it's drooping and wilting. She needs some help.*
I told her to take a cutting right now to make sure she at least has a piece of it to go on, but, hopefully one of you can save it. It looks Geranium-ish to me. But, I'm not a house plant person. It's also old, I can tell that by the old stems. I put the pics on full size so you can click them and take a closer look.

Biz, here's a site that tells you how to use rooting hormone to make a new plant. I know that will work on this plant. But, hopefully someone knows what that plant is and what's wrong with it.

Click the pics and them click them again..you can see them huge. I don't see any sign of insect damage and it has sufficient light there. Biz, have you done anything different lately?
You need a bigger pot sweetie. Those stems are big and I think it would thrive with a bigger and deeper pot. Great idea Pat had, take a couple of cuttings. I had a plant from my GP's funeral for many years. Good luck. She are such a sweet lady. I often wonder why you post here.
It looks like it may be a case of root rot to me. Have you transplanted recently? The tips of the roots are suppose to be white. If they are black looking, you may have to air layer it. I've done this successfully to a few of my plants.
Cut through the stem or bark at an angle about halfway through. Hold it open with a toothpick and apply rooting hormone into the wound. Wrap wet sphagnum peat moss around the area and cover that tightly with plastic wrap and secure at the top and bottom with twist ties. Make sure the moss doesn't dry out. Roots will form in the moss and you can then cut it off and replant.
Plants come to my house to die, so I have no advice to offer. Hope it gets healthier, Biz. Talk to it?!

Biz~
This looks like transplant shock or shock from a big temperature swing (exposed to cold).
It shows all new, healthy growth on the top. Have you transplanted it or just given it too much water or fertilizer? And, has it always been discolored by the base? If the discoloration is new, does it feel wet or slimey?
What Peg posted sounds interesting. I would have guessed it needed a bigger pot with that size stem, but I don't have a lot of knowledge or particular talent with house plants. Sorry. Hope something works for your plant.
Yes,
a bigger pot will help immensely. Has it been in the same spot the whole time or did you recently move it?
It is very sad when an old house plant kicks it. I have a couple plants that are older then my 16 yr old.
I hope you can save it!
That pot looks big to me. Does it have good drainage?
I disagree about the plant needing a bigger pot. It's better for plants to err on the side of a smaller pot. Soehow it makes the plant feel more cozy. I am bothered by the discoloration at the base and I have a feeling if you tug on the plant gently that that plant is very loose in the soil. Sad to say but it looks like root rot to me and it's time to take a cutting. And as a last resort after doing the cutting I would try cutting the plant way back and see if it comes back. You might be pleasantly surprised.
I'm learning a few things here, today. This is cool, and I hope that something here saves the plant.
i thought this looked like a plant in the aralia family. i think it may be a "Chicken Gizzard Aralia" anyway ur probably over watering it. look up the care. and if u take a cutting put the blighted leaf in a plastic ziploc and bring it to the nursery to ID the prob. good luck, i love aralias, my fav is the ming aralia, so lush and beautiful.
DD - Thanks again.
No I have not done anything different - at all. It has not been exposed to extreme cold or hot, gone with out water or been over watered.
It was actually in a smaller plastic pot inside the white pot - exactly how I took it from my uncles house. I took it out of the small plastic pot when it started looking sickly a few days ago and added new potting soil.
Miss Jackson - Excuse me? I don't know you or what you mean that you "often wonder why I post here". I post here because I like Pat and I like reading what she has to say, I also like the other commenters here. As if it matters.
Thanks everyone for your ideas and advice, I really appreciate it!
Biz...glad to see you back on. I thoght you weren't around for awhile. How's the bean?
My only suggestion is to take the plant to a very good nursery. One that's been around for awhile. They will be able to tell you exactly what is wrong and what you need to do. That's always worked for me. But I've also found (in my case anyway), the plants I don't care about thrive and the ones I do care about die. I, of course, have named this phenomenon after me!
Stop watering it with Windex.
I thought I knew a little something about houseplants. Not so much. My Grandmother had a plant for about 12 years when she died in 1981. My Mom took that plant and it thrived under her care. When she moved in with me several years ago I took over the care and it did not do as well but I managed to bring it back from the brink a few times. I killed it about 6 months ago. I still am amazed that a houseplant could live so long--40 years. I am still so mad at myself that I killed it. (too much water)
Sometimes when plants are moved into new pots, they go into shock. Give it a few more days. Did you use new soil that had fertilizer in it? You should not use fertilizer when repotting.
What made me suspicious of root rot was the fact that the bottom stem looks wet. (and the limp appearance) This tells me that the roots may not be absorbing the moisture in the soil.
Is it dropping green leaves Biz?
Crabbie- why didn't I think of that?!
Peg - it dropped a few leaves the other day but they were dry. The bottom of the trunk has always had that wet appearance.
I didn't "repot" it in the larger pot until it was already appearing sickly, that was all I could think to do.
It's just drooping lower and lower and getting paler and paler... I need a plant hospital
take it to a nursery or greenhouse ASAP, they can help you!
hey....i asked my granfather for help...he is a famous agriculturist...i dint show him the pix but told him the situation....sum simple steps wud be more sunlite and repotting.....do take a bigger pot...throw in organic manure(no chemicals...plants too have allergies)more soil...and do plough and soften it......carry out the whole process carefully.....give water during nite....cause durin day water evaporates before it reaches the roots....and don forget sunlight...i hope ur plant feels better.
maybe your cat is peeing in or that naughty kid of yours is putting things in it. got to watch them damn kids. MUAAHHHH!!!!
Hey anon my cat must've mistaken it for your face.
I would love to take it to a good nursery or garden center ... but there are none around here. Home depot is the closest thing and I doubt they'd be any good.
call a local florist and ask if they know about house plants!!!
Checking. How is it today, Biz?
not good. done everything I can do, just waiting for it to officially be dead. took it to a florist and they had no suggestions.
