Niagra Falls as seen through the eyes of Kiki. I put these on full size so you can appreciate them. I think Kiki is a beautful person who sees the world in a beautiful way. I wish I could be more like that sometimes. Anyway, nice, huu?
Don't ya just love that emerald green?! Ahh...I miss it. Spent 20 years in that area (Ontario side) mostly waiting for that stranded barge up river to finally give way and crash over the falls. Don't think that's ever going to happen. The Niagara Parkway is one of the most scenic and so is the corresponding NY roadway.
I live 20 minutes from there. On a clear day I can see the mist from the windows at work.
Use to work down there as a teenager. Most common questions asked are... When do they turn off the water? (depending on my mood, never or 2 am, although they do divert some water to the hydro electric plant in the middle of the night) and Where is the snow? (it's August, come back in 6 months)
My mom use to babysit the kids of a guy that went over the falls in a barrel. He had so much fun he did it again a few years later.
The first photo shows the rainbow bridge that spans the border to the USA -ny state. The falls in that photo is the American side, called Bridal Veil falls as the water cascades over the edge it resembles the white tuille sheer fabric of a brides veil. The second photo shows both falls in the distance on the right is the Canadian horseshoe falls since it resembles a curved circular shape of a horseshoe. The curvature accumulates and disperces the mist from the rushing water as it tumbles over from the whirlpool rapids. The teal blue/green colours of the water is just beautiful to gaze upon. Kiki :)
Gosh, Kiki. You have brought back many memories for me. I have been to the Falls 3 times. Such an amazing sight. Seen the Fall from all the vantage points-- including a helicopter ride. Would love to see them in Winter.
Kiki...WOW! I wish I could take pics like that! I took a pic a while back of 3 buffalo and had the film developed. Thre was not one buffalo in the picture. I think they were ghost buffs. Someone sent me an old picture of when the falls actually froze--I think it was something like 1919.
Off the subject...I'm watching Dancing With the Stars. I wanted to see Buzz Aldrine. The man is 80yrs. old and is in great shape. Not much of a dancer---but, he did do the first moon walk!
You know who is on later--well at least I saw buzz.
Lived in Rochester, NY for a while and went to Niagara Falls a few time. It is quite an experience and I do miss that area. Western NY and region is quite beautiful and the falls are fantastic.
BJ I actually have that pix of the falls frozen over in the early 1900s. The pix depicts Victorian women walking upon the ice. Did I send you that photo ? I saw Buzz he did great for 80 ! That judge in the middle Len was mean to him. Unfortanately he got the lowest score of 14 pts. Pamela was too sexxxy for Bruno& Cari. - Kiki :)
Can't see sheep it's mild here in march. DD thank you for the kind words you added to this post :) I just read them Now some how I missed them yeasterday I just jumped onto the comments. Thanks for posting my pix too. The day I went to the falls it was so do warm almost hit 70 degrees. Clear skies and sweetly warm. I got a taste of an early spring. Kiki :)
The name Niagara comes from the native ojibwe language it translates as follows ; " thundering waters. " Btw & yes they are loud and thurderous as the niagara river cascades over and over relentlessly over the escarpment for thousands of years. You know in a million years or so give or take a few hundred or so the rock face will wear completely away and niagara falls will be no more. Kiki :•]
Kiki...I don't know where I got that picture. But I did keep it to share with my kids! It's hard to imagine it could get so cold for so long to enable that to happen. I've never seen the Falls. Maybe one day!!
kiki lovely photos. Still looks the same. Hey Kiki do you know were I can get some old photos of the falls? Im looking for when the falls dried up and when they froze over. I have a friend who is putting a history of the falls together
Kiki, do you live up there? y dad was stationed up in Niagara Falls when I was little. We lived in Lockport. We saw the falls often. It got to be an everyday ho-hum event tho, I appreciate it now. I think back then in the early 60's you could still drive by & see them from the road cuz I know we did. Beautiful. We were there the day a boy went over Horseshoe Falls & lived!!! It was in the 60's. The Worlds Fair was in NYC and I kept begging my mom to take me! LOL...she never did. NY was fun. Good memories rox
Rox I live about an hour away in Toronto. I agree with you that it gets to be that we become used to having it so close by. I recently went to AZ to see the grandcanyon and was awestruck. When I was down there in AZ I met a woman who was so used to having the grandcanyon nearby that it became humdrum for her. She said that the Falls is a natural wonder shed kill to go see it. It's like the old addage " everyone wants what they don't have. " I left with a new appreciation for Canada my homeland and it own famous natural wonder of Niagara Falls. Her words changed my perspective on my surroundings. I've been to Lockport & tonawanda mostly to the walden galleria area of western ny. I fly to NYC aprox 2-3 times a year s f w never in summer too hot and crowded with tourists. If you've still haven't gone to NYC the best time to see manhattan is after thanksgiving once they get the big tree up at 30 rock and open up the rockefellar skating rink. Christmas in NYC is just magical place to experience ! I love NYC ! Kiki :) rink

Ava's Mommy ~ I also sent some old Falls pictures to Pat. Mine are from 1938 when the river & falls froze with ice jams on the river. The Rainbow Bridge collapsed & my parents were there snapping away on the Box Brownie. Also found pictures from the 1960's when they closed off the American Falls to do restoration. The river was diverted to the Canadian side. If you want those, I'll scan em and send to Pat.
Cj I love to see those. Yes the falls did freeze solid about 6 times or so usually when the water stops flowing due to ice jams. Only on the American side though. The Canadian side has never frozen over. I have my own pix of an icey rail 2 winters ago. I will find it and send it to DD too gtg look now. Kiki
Kiki ~ I just sent Pat an email with pictures of the 'dry' Falls from the summer of 1969. On 3/22 I sent her one of the frozen Niagara River, ice jams and the Honeymoon Bridge from January 1938. I asked her to fwd the emails to you.
Thanks C j I want to see the dry falls ! Oh my that should be something ! Probably won't get it until Sunday that's when DD reads all her emails on sun mornings. I recently learned that niagara falls is only 12 thousand years old ! I thot it was a million years old ?! Funny and that it could last as much as ..Max another 8ooo years tops b4 it all eroded away !!! Omg I thot it would last another million ?!!!!!!!! Boy am I geologically dumb ! LoL thanks for the pix Cj :) -Kiki

I love the Canadian side of the Falls...simply beautiful. And there are Rose gardens--what is the name? Lovely, must see.

p.s. Rose garden is either Oakes garden by Cliffton hill or at the school of horticulture, where the butterfly conservatory is.
