Heidi and her daughter have space in a community garden. That's the way to do it! She has There are heirloom tomatoes, leeks, bibb lettuce, radishes, beets, 1 brussel sprout, Italian curly parsley, and corn. I wish I had raised container beds, those are so nice!*
Heidi, you'll have to let me know how you do with those heirloom tomatoes..I grew them last year and I never will again. Here they get too big and uncontrollable. They taste good though.

what a great idea heidi a community garden. Other people should be picking up this idea to. Its great for the environment and healthy.
The idea is great, it just depends on how people are around it. My mom has been planting in one for over 16 years, but in the last year or so there has been so much vandalism and theft. My mom is 82 and it really hurts my feelings to hear her upset that she had been saving some tomatoes or whatnot to get riper, and they are gone.
Good luck with your location, I hope you have a great harvest.
I hate garden thievs. You wait so long to see your veggies to ripen and they steal a bit of your soul when they do that. Makes me so angry.
That's so cool Heidi! How fun. I planted some veggies only to have the raccoons and squirrels feast on them. Still, I fared better than my neighbor. The raccoons ate all of the pricey koi fish from his newly-constructed pond.
Wow, community gardens are very cool! From what I have read raised gardens do very well. How nice that you are doing it with your daughter! You will have to send DD more pics as things grow so we can see the bounty!
DD - If I remember correctly your Heirloom's got side seam splits last year, is that right? I grew them 3yrs ago and the same thing happened -- cause they got too big and then alot of buggy critters got in mine. Maybe I did something wrong with them because I have a friend who swears by them.
i think when tomaters get side splits it's because they get too much water....i think i read that somewhere once...
FUCK GARDEN THIEVES!!!
always leave the first fruits though as an offering to the growing goddesses or fairies or whomever.....it will assure a bountiful harvest....i've been doing that for years and it seems to work!!! a neighbor didn't listen to me and she picked the first strawberry off her plant to eat and not only was the berry bitter, the rest of her strawberries got destroyed by a fungus! the next year she kept the first one on as an offering and had a great berry crop of sweet berries!
might be folklore, but i am a believer!!
Heidi, Just got my tomatoes from Home Depot today! 99 cents each! whoohooo. Bruscetta yummy yummy! Your garden is gorgeous. We have some community gardens here by my house. I think I'll check them out.

Aw shucks. I was just showing to show but now I have a garden audience..LOL
I have done heirlooms for 3 years. This is my fourth. I have tried the big ones like Mortgage Lifters but they are just too big. When I want those kind, I buy them from the organic dude at the farmer`s market.
The bed is filled with organic compost and loam. That is it. Stuff takes off.
We had some thieves last year and I embarrassed the piss out of them. Motherfuckers better not come back.
I am a woman who loves plants and has chronic depression..I live on the edge! ROFL
I will continue to take pics of the community beds and that barrel of lettuce at the house.
I am so happy this year. My back surgery worked and I am able to garden!
I wanted to share!!
Oh shit Pat..Did I send you two of the same picture?
Because I have that plot in the pic and that plot next to it. I thought I sent you both. Oh well.
Bima, I also picked up a couple of those 99 cent tomatoes yesterday. I got an Early Girl and a Better Boy. Besides those I have Heirloom Beef Steak, Super Fantastic, Moby Grape (a cross between a roma and grape so it looks like a larger grape tomato) regular grape tomatoes and super sweet cherry.
Heidi, I also planted brussel sprouts but I'm afraid they aren't going to do well because it gets too hot here in Chicago. It's been 90 the past couple of days. I read they don't get firm and they will taste rally strong if the weather is too warm. It's best to plant them in the fall
I also have butternut squash, zucchini, red and sweet onions, radishes, carrots, celery cucumbers, jalapenos and red, green, yellow, and orange peppers and sweet banana peppers. The banana peppers I blanch and stuff with Italian sausage and mozzarella cheese and bake in a red sauce. It's one of my husbands and sons favorite meals.
My husband is afraid I'm getting ready to plow the whole back yard to plant more. I wish I could.
Tomorrow I'm planting marigolds and basil in with my veggies.
I'm looking for one I grew last year. It was an LSU hybrid. The tomato was called LSU364 or something like that. If anyone down here has heard about it, please let me know. I got about 30tomatoes off of one plant. It bared all summer long and it was bug and disease resistent. I wish I could find the seeds.
Peg,
Both plants have died since I went there to water. One of my plot neighbors planted them last year and they were gorgeous and big! I guess I will just be happy that she lets me pick some. LOL
Oldest brought home some spare purple cabbage plants that the kids in her class did not plant. I am going to plant them out in the yard here at home.
I harvested a bounty of radishes last night at the plot. They were a variety of types. Very strong and spicy. Oldest and I love them! Those wimpy radishes at the store could be beaten up by the ones I grew in the garden.
Heidi, I just have the red radishes. I'm sorry I didn't plant some white ones too. Maybe I still will. I've discovered I have a planting illness. lol
I did pull up my 2 strawberry plants today. This was their 3rd year and they had quite a lot of strawberries on them but they kept attracting these big birds into my garden. Half of the berries were pecked at. They also attracted these little fruit flies and slugs. It was time for them to go.
Thats amazing! Good for you. beautiful. Good luck with the harvest! Make sure nobody helps themselves to your bounty!!
They do this at Purdue and you can tell what country someone is from by the way they do thier garden. Its interesting. Some countries have the strangest gardening methods. And they use them here too. It doesnt matter what soil or climate, they have their ways and they dont change. It's very international.
xoxo

NancyB, exactly! Those suckers are huge.
No, Heidi, it was my mistake. I got so many pics yesterday I got confused. I lost Tia's Wisteria too. Sorry.
