Safety devices that can kill you

In a study done by the Insurance Instuitute For Highway Safety by The New York Times, esearch suggests that the newest versions of air bags, required in all cars starting in 2008 or even 2004 in some cases, could be increasing the likelihood of death for front seat passengers and drivers in crashes. Estimates suggest that 80 percent of drivers don seat belts nowadays, but the regulations for air bags were created when less drivers used the safety devices.
*
The main area of concern to researchers is that finding that belted drivers “had a 21 percent greater chance of dying in cars equipped with the latest model of air bags than those in vehicles with the previous model. The risk for unbelted drivers was unchanged.”
*
“The fact is that we’re not getting optimal protection for belted drivers,” David Zuby, senior vice president for vehicle research at the insurance institute said, adding, “The study does not suggest that people should turn off their air bags nor does it suggest that people should unbuckle their seat belts."

Uhhh, that's EXACTLY what the study says, Mr. Smart Ass VP. EX-frickin-zactly. You bunch of morons. Either fix this crap or stop requiring us, by law, to use it. Fucking idiots!

smaller women are at higher risk of injury or death with air bags....the force can crush your ribs and damage your heart....

MissTia ita there have been a few petite
women that have died when the force of the
airbag inflating broke their necks in crashes.
As a petite woman myself I am concerned.

I'm pretty damn short and seatbelts go right across my neck. I get so constantly frustrated by the strangulation, I could scream.

And if I was in an accident, wouldn't it break my neck?

Me too DD the seatbelt cuts across my neck.
Airbags could possibly snap our necks and
essentially kill us not the crash. It's happened
up here in Toronto to a few petite women.
It's ironic that the new safety features are the
very ones that can kill us! Design flaws abound.
All this new technology is going to be the end
of us all. What do we do cry or laugh ?? Kiki :•?

I never use the seat belt due to stangulation issues.

FUCK SEAT BELTS!!!

I broke both bones in half on my right forearm this past Dec from an airbag. The scary thing is the ancident was a relatively small fender bender but the airbags unexpectedly deployed.

Being hit by the larger passenger bag the F'ing thing either stunned me and/or made me unconscious for a few seconds where I was totally disoriented for a few minutes. It felt like someone punched me and felt bruised all over. The chemical must have also leaked from it because I also felt a burning sensation all over. The force of it also shoved the nose pads of my glasses into my face so far I was bleeding on both sides of my nose. I WANT THE OPTION TO SHUT THEM OFF!

If you do shut them off, in some cars you can--at least the passenger's side, will the insurance companies pay up?

No, the study doesnt say that you should turn off the airbag or not use seatbelts!
It only compared fatality in drivers using newer airbag models, to older airbag models. It stated that when testing both models and then comparing cases with belted driver to those without, that newer models of airbags do not change anything for the better for unbelted drivers, an actually lead to higher rates of fatality in belted drivers. This refers to the change (ie: belted drivers have a higher risk than before, the unbelted risk does not change), not the absolute risk!! (it doesnt say anything about the risk of drivers using belts compared to those not using them)
If anything, it says that people who drive with their seatbelts on, are better off in cars equipped with older airbag models. Again, the study does NOT compare fatality between belt/no belt or airbag/no airbag.
(Which according to all the research Ive read, definitely shows lower fatality/less serious injuries in accidents where seatbelts and airbags, o rat least one of them were used. I do agree that both have their risks and need tob e installed/used properly, but the SAVE LIVES!!)
Please, try to read scientific research results properly before you go round telling people to stop using airbags and seatbelts!!!

For the "shorties" - It's kinda hard to explain but look for a seatbelt adjustment on the wall of your car. I slide mine all the way down.
