Spring garden

Heidi sent me these, and I love them. Her Spring Phlox is a showy bright addition to that retaining wall. And Hedi did it the smart way, she bought one bunch and every year she divides and trasplants some roots until the whole thing is covered with color. Brilliant. She's also growing lettuce in containers, which I love. That one container will give you tons of lettuce all season. It's almost ready to harvest!

Heidi, Beautiful phlox. Don't you just love Spring?

Miss Tia has some terrific pix of a neighbors flowering rhododendron that are gorgeous on her LJ.

I used to have 3 very very large rhods in front of my house. We had to cut them down though. They were overpowering the front yard and they rotted out the supports under the porch (always damp). They were gorgeous. I will have to go dig to find a pic.
Yeah, creeping phlox is easy to transplant. Took me many years to get it like this but it was worth it.
Thanks

I have so many annuals coming back from last year and we had a bad winter. I have wave petunias, nemesia, verbena. This is the third year in a row that my alyssum and dusty miller is coming back. I never pull up my annuals. Instead I just cut back. I just discovered today that I have 3 tomato plants coming up out in front. I have no idea how they got there unless a squirrel buried some tomatoes or a bird shit out some seeds. I hope I'll be able to transplant them, though it would be nice to know what kind of tomatoes they are.

Does anyone have any recommendations on some tomato plants? I have my grape tomato plants and I have a big beef hybrid.

I plant grape and cherry tomatoes in containers. The pots are deep enough that I can fit a cage in there. I plant herbs in pots. I have a pot of chives that I have wintered over for 3 years straight. Every Spring, the chives come back in the pot.
I cage all my tomatoes. I do that because I plant many types and many plants (i have friends and family that love them). If I did not cage them, it would be a tomato bloodbath in the front yard!

Heidi, I cage all my tomatoes too. Especially the grape tomatoes. The go wild. I just can't figure out how 3 tomato plants found their way to my front flower garden. I could never eat everything I grow but I like to give it away to family and neighbors.

I would love to plant some phlox. How long do the flowers last. Do they bloom all summer?

maybe a tomato fell off the vine and it rotted and it re-seeded itself. that is what I would think.

the creeping phlox is a creeper..LOL so when you pull a plant apart you will see that each strand or branch has multiple roots along the edge. These transplants do not need to be planted very deep in the ground. just make sure the roots are covered with dirt and you keep them watered. I live in the Northeast. The phlox start blooming in mid april and start to fade. right now i still have flowers but nothing like when they were really showy..even showier then this picture. So for me, the flowers can last about 2 months if I am lucky.
I trim them in the fall and then in the spring, i trim off any dead foliage.
