I pick up old light fixtures at yard sales. I take the globe part off and bury the hole side of it in the dirt. Those big old 70's hanging lamps are really great for this. I also buy any spare ceramic tiles and put them around the edges. As long as they appeal to me. I never spend more than a dollar for any of it. I think they look pretty.

good idea- great way to recycle too.
I have statues all over my yard but they did not cost me that much. They were either clearance, yard sale, or going out of business.
I should take pictures.
I just changed my avatar. That is a fairy sitting on a lily leaf. I paid $5 for her at a going out of business sale. She is heavy.
I really like this idea! I loved these lamps back in the day and seeing one in your garden is fun!! Adding the tiles was a great idea...Got to get yard saling again! That's where I get all my cool stuff...
Heidi-love your fairy!!
Never would have thought of that!
Can't wait to have an actual garden. In the ground. Not in containers. Not in New Jersey.
One day ...
DD - Just sent you some pics :-)
my neighbor up the street has a gorgeous garden in the front of her house. she uses all kinds of found things as architectural doo dads mixed in with the flowers. she has this huge blue china patterned planter that was busted long ago on one side. She puts the broken side in the dirt and makes it look like the flowers are coming out from under the pot.
That fairy is CUTE. We don't have any garden supply stores here. You have to get creative.
If you're still thinking about getting creative with your concrete, here's a link to directions for making a Moai head (like the ones on Easter Island): http://www.ehow.com/how_2182180_build-garden-statue-moai-head.html
One of the theories about them is that they protect the island, so yours could protect you from your family and neighbors.

Thanks so much for the easter island instructions.
I have some cementing in the yard to do anyhow so I might as well get some supplies and try this out. Maybe if any of us are any good, we can sell them.
COOL. Thanks Maggie.
Biz, I got your photos. I love Sammy and she is so darling at the zoo. Those pics will be on soon. She's getting to be a big girl!
At our local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, they give away the broken pieces of ceramic and glass tile. I mentioned that I would love to do a mosaic of some kind, and the guy told me that there was a lady who came in and took home a truckload of free broken tile and did her whole driveway like that! I think that would look so cool!
